Algorithms shape many aspects of our society, some minor, and some critical. Credit ratings, employability screening, criminal sentencing, are all influenced by algorithms. It's important to question the assumptions behind those algorithms. Cathy O’Neil, Meredith Broussard, and Solon Barocas led a discussion about the importance of questioning the algorithms that influence so much of our reality. The event was the first in a series sponsored by DataKind, Microsoft Tech and Civic Engagement, and hosted by Civic Hall. Visual notes created by Jonny Goldstein using an iPad and the Paper app.

This project is part of the Ars Electronica CyberArts Exhibition. Algorithms have become essential elements of our daily lives, used in almost all areas of society: in online searches and navigation, in ratings systems and smart devices or bots, but also in banking, speech and facial recognition, health care, policing, and so on. However, the systems that are developed are never neutral, which means that algorithms may be biased and discriminatory. The Algorithmic Justice League (AJL) is an organization that combines art and research to increase public awareness of the social implications and dangers of Artificial Intelligence. It does so through artistic means, for example texts, TED talks, or films – or, for example, through founder Joy Buolamwini’s talk “AI, Ain’t I a Woman?” in the format of a poem.

Day 4 and we have started printing, yeah !
Algorithmes Sérigraphiques is a week long creative workshop using Processing to generate images and silk screen to print the results.

Algorithms in art are no longer mere visualization tools, but rather creative partners with a considerable share of aesthetic responsibility. The universal language of algorithms is math. Students of the subject put hands-on principles of mathematics in art, get acquainted with more than 50 creative software tools (visual grammars, fractals, chaos, tessellations, etc.) and learn how to understand and critically reflect on calculated creativity.

A study of the dormant grasses near my home.
The amount of variety in the texture of natural objects is overwhelming. The textures can be extremely sophisticated and complex. I've tried to capture the spirit of the grass here.
This is primarily accomplished by scaling probability distributions across a vertical gradient. The following attributes are determined through controlled randomness: the size and shapes of "patches" of grass; the number of light vs dark blades; the length, thickness, curvature, and slant of the blades; and the number and density of blades within a patch.
I wrote an explanation of how I created this study here: www.tylerlhobbs.com/writings/texture-study-grass

This is the first prototype of the orkyd project. The form is way to uni-directional and needs a lot of work, but a cool first attempt at double-sided milling. Notice the high-tech method of fastening the foam to the bed, as well as, the super awesome foam!

Photo showing the Project "Not Allowed for Algorithmic Audiences" by Kyriaki Goni (GR) at the Ars Electronica Festival 2021.
Just before being shut down, an Intelligent Personal Assistant (IPA) situated in Athens, Greece, exhibits odd behavior. It borrows an avatar and appears before its users. For a brief period of time every day, for seven consecutive days, it goes into a monologue. During its length of operation, the digital assistant has managed to scan the entire contents of the Internet and gather all sorts of information—information that it longs to share. The IPA uses its fragmented monologue as an opportunity to introduce itself, talk about its skills, its ancestors, its anatomy and origins, and about voice and its significance. It reveals data regarding the listening infrastructure, as well as the social dysfunctions and bias on which its programming and training are based. Just before it reaches the end of its monologue, in a final effort to reconcile humans and machines, it shares tips with us on how we can manage to not be heard. In her project, Kyriaki Goni integrates in a fictional narrative the current wealth of research on artificial intelligence, automated voice systems and the relationship between humans and machines into a fictional narrative. Could poetics be a way for us to understand the machines? How can we de-bias the training processes? Is it possible to make kin with machines?

Helena Nikonole is a new media artist, independent curator and educator living in Moscow. Her field of interests embraces hybrid art, the new aesthetics, the Internet of Things, and Artificial Intelligence. In her works she explores technology’s potential opportunities, but also potential risks and dangers which techno-evangelists and scientists are not able to realize.
In this way she also conceived her first ever solo exhibition, titled "Contagious Algorithms", presenting her works that use cracks in the system of IP cameras and the Internet of Things.
Using these cracks, Helena Nikonole employs algorithms to generate new meanings and functions of hacked systems, pointing out their shortcomings and revealing how they operate, especially in terms of the amount of data collected by digital devices about their users. These data may be just some digital trash, or maybe have a purpose beyond the usual narrative of the political and marketing manipulation, to us incomprehensible, or perhaps understandable only with the help of divine intervention.
Be sure to visit the exhibition which allows algorithms to show a range of their abilities, from reading and interpreting data to generating new meanings in the form of musical compositions and sacred books.

Facebook Algorithmic Factory sheds light on the invisible processes that take place inside the world’s largest social network. Inside this black box, non-transparent algorithms are deciding what kind of content will become a part of our reality, what will be censored or deleted, which ideas will spread and what news gain most visibility. They are also defining new forms of labor and exploitation. Users are no longer clients. We only provide data, which serves as raw material for the production of digital profiles – a key commodity on internet stock markets.
Facebook Algorithmic Factory generates an enormous amount of wealth and power by creating a deep economic gap between those who own and control the means of production and their users, who often live below the poverty line. The layers of algorithmic data processing may conceal new forms of human rights violation, novel mechanisms for exploitation and manipulation that we no longer control. Our first step in fighting them back is to make them visible.

Three games of life: one in each of R, G, and B. The three color channels are independent, but largely the same. There are just 5 gliders of each color that begin not in sync with the other 2 colors. Collisions produce cyan, yellow, and magenta as one channel gets tied up and the other two continue on. The resulting image was scaled up 4x with the program hqx.
Generated and visualized in Excel using the drawing objects. For further images see www.michael-hansmeyer.com
