A bottle of Orval from Brasserie d'Orval in Villers-devant-Orval, Belgium, at Håndverkerstuene in Oslo.
Brasserie d'Orval is located within the walls of Abbaye de Notre-Dame d'Orval, a Trappist monastery, making it one of only seven authentic Trappist breweries. However, there are few similarities between Orval and the other Trappist beers. While most Trappist beers tend to be mild on hops and fairly sweet (in particular the doubles), Orval is both hoppy and dry.
This particular bottle of Orval was brewed in September 2010 and had a strength of 6,9% abv. It poured a hazy, orange color with a large, bubbly white head. Aroma was fruity, ripe apples or perhaps peaches, with typical Belgian style spices, reminding me a bit of the AleSmith Horney Devil I recently had. Mouthfeel was crisp, very dry. Flavor started out with a dry fruitiness, definitively apples, with hints of yeast. Then the hops kicked in, flowery and dry with a nice bitterness that lingered in the aftertaste. This is a tasty, refreshing and very drinkable beer. Delicious!

A bottle of IPA from AleSmith Brewing Company in San Diego, California, at Håndverkerstuene in Oslo.
This 7,25% abv India Pale Ale poured a hazy golden color with a white head. Aroma dominated by floral west coast hops, simply delicious! Smooth mouthfeel with a nice carbonation. Flavor starts out with a good malt punch before the bitter hops kick in, creating a very balanced and refreshing India Pale Ale. Long, bitter resinous finish with a lingering caramel note. A great beer and a world class IPA!

View inside the bottle shop at ALEhouse in Riga, Latvia, with predominantly US craft beers in the shelves, such as Port Brewing / Lost Abbey, Hoppin' Frog, AleSmith, Epic Brewing, North Coast and Rogue Ales. The shop also had some European craft beer, including Mikkeller, 8 Wired, Nøgne Ø and De Molen. I found nothing from Latvia.
My west coast connection Andy hooked me up with an impressive array of beers. AleSmith Decadence 2008, Lost Abbey Duck Duck Gooze, Lost Abbey Carnevale 2009, Pizza Port Hot Rocks Lager, Pizza Port Panzer Imperial Pils, Russian River Damnation Batch 23, along with four homebrews, a bottle of estate olive oil, and a jar of his homemade fig jam. Holy crap!

A bottle of Wee Heavy Scotch Ale from AleSmith Brewing Company in San Diego, California, at The Bishop's Arms on Järntorget in Göteborg, Sweden.
Unfortunately, our bottle of Wee Heavy was ruined. It didn't have that typical sweet scotch taste, but had a sour bitter flavor that dominated both the aroma and the taste. If this had been a lambic or wild ale I wouldn't have reacted, but a scotch ale should not have such flavors. We informed the bartender and got a new bottle, but it was exactly the same, so we gave up on the Wee Heavy.
A bottle of Decadence 2010 from AleSmith Brewing Company in San Diego, California, at HåndverkerStuene in Oslo.
Decadence is the name of the anniversary ale series from AleSmith. It has been brewed to a different recipe every year since it was first made in 2005, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the brewery that year. Until 2010. This year it was actually made after the same recipe as Decadence 2005: An 11% abv English-style old ale.
Decadence 2010 poured a hazy reddish brown color with a small beige head. Aroma of toasted malts and light floral hops. Mouthfeel was medium heavy, with an oily texture. Flavor started out with plenty of caramel, some toasted malt and fruits too. Some light bitterness but overall very sweet, typical old ale. A good beer, though not among my favorites from AleSmith.
Had a short mid-week holiday trip to Copenhagen, and picked up bottles of every beer I could carry that they don't sell at the Swedish alcohol monopoly stores. Some Mikkeller, some Nøgne ø, some Lagunitas, Amager, Alesmith, Green Flash, etc etc.
A bottle of YuleSmith from AleSmith Brewing Company in San Diego, California, at HåndverkerStuene in Oslo.
YuleSmith is a 9.5% abv American strong ale. It poured a clear, red brown color with a big tan head. Big sweet aroma, with notes of citrus hops and some toasted malt. Nice! Mouthfeel is medium heavy with a nice carbonation. Flavor starts out sweet but is balanced by floral hops and some toasted malts. Nice bitter finish. Another well-made beer from AleSmith.
A bottle of Wee Heavy Scotch Ale from AleSmith Brewing Company in San Diego, California.
I tried this a couple of weeks ago, but it was totally ruined (I later heard the entire shipment to Sweden had been!) so I looked forward to trying this bottle that had been bought in the US.
The Wee Heavy is a 10% abv scotch style ale. It poured a dark golden brown color with a fine beige head. Sweet aroma with some roastedness, so typical of strong scotch ales. Smooth mouthfeel with a creamy carbonation. Flavors are not as sweet as the aroma promised, more subdued and very balanced, with notes of brown sugar and roasted malt bitterness. Aftertaste is slightly sweet with a hint of alcohol warmth. Highly enjoyable!
Bought these bad boys at a place called "Home of the Hangover" in Big Bear, CA. They were all so tasty!

A bottle of IPA from AleSmith Brewing Company in San Diego, California.
This 7,25% abv India Pale Ale poured a hazy golden color with a tiny white head. Aroma was very hoppy with some grass notes. Flavor was bitter with a resinous finish. A bit one-dimensial in my mouth, some floral or citrus hops would have improved the overall impression. But this bottle may have been a bit old.
Belgian Strong Ale (brewed with Coriander)
(AleSmith Brewing Company, San Diego CA)
Good
I wasn't as knocked out by this as some others are. It seemed a bit too sweet and there was too much coriander for my tastes.
The Bruery White Chocolate (maybe my 4th favorite from them, tasted like white chocolate and bourbon); Stone Vertical Epic 11.11.11 aged in red wine barrels (like the normal 11.11.11 Vertical Epic with a little less spice and lots of red wine/oak flavor); Alesmith Decadence (this wasn't anything incredible as far as quads go, but paired wonderfully with vegan coconut ice cream); Stone Enjoy By 07.04.13 (my hophead friends said it was the best out of this bunch, but I thought it was a standard "great" DIPA); Epic Big Bad Baptist (really good, yet fairly basic "great" coffee stout. Like drinking alcoholic coffee).
