GB&W RS2 (303) with another Alco switcher - Nekoosa Paper? - at Norwood Shop. I would assume that the outlander Alco was probably quite at home here as the GBW was surely doing contract work on it. That ancient shop building surely contained a lot of Alco expertise.

GB&W power set, RS3, C424, rebuilt RS11 (305-314-309) at Norwood Shop. My first encounter with GB&W, and my only encounter with the gray stripe paint scheme. I had to wait for my first year at college and the return "home" for the Christmas/New Year holiday (which was extended at Tulsa University for an "interim semester".) This lake effect snow squall was left behind as soon as I drove Mom's car a little out of Green Bay.

Passing through Tracy, Minn. the other day with its small yard, no depot and no activity, it reminded me when I used to visit Tracy a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Ex-Chicago Great Western RS2 No. 55 is switching the yard at Tracy on Oct. 24, 1976. Love all the boxcars and gondolas - and no graffiti!

GB&W RS2 (303) with another Alco switcher - Nekoosa Paper? - at Norwood Shop. I knew nothing about Nekoosa Paper back then, and not much more about the Green Bay & Western, except that it was an interesting little railroad about 180 mies from where I grew up. My first Christmas/New Years holiday from college (where an "interem semester" was optional) gave me an opportunity to work at a bookstore, AND take Mom's car for a quick spin in the land of Cheddarheads before returning to Oklahoma and the groves of academe. Now I know that GB&W sold some of their Alco switchers to the paper company in Wisconsin Rapids, so I suppose that explains the blue and yellow switcher.

Gathered around the former Pere Marquette turntable in Saginaw are Lake State Railway C425M-AC #181, C425M #281, GP38M #371, RS3M #974, and RS2 #469. The Alco era on the LSRC had ended only a few days before my visit with the final retirement of C425M-AC #1280. Unfortunately, the #181, #281, #974, and all of the other Alcos still on the property (other than the #469) would be scrapped later that year. #371 would languish here for a few more years before being shipped to Metro East Industries for conversion into a road slug. Today it is LSRC #303.

Some Lake Michigan "lake effect" snow has taken over since that last shot, and a Green Bay & Western RS3, C424, rebuilt RS11 power set (305-314-309) is at Norwood Shop. Twenty years later I would conclude that this is the power for #1 to East Winona, but the "boat trains" to Kewaunee, to meet the carferry from Michigan, were still a factor when I took this picture. This is the only time I encountered one of the grey-stripe units; I sure wish there was more. Photogenic as it was, I probably wished the snow would stop as I had a long drive back to Chicago. As it was lake effect snow, that is exactly what happened; only a few miles out of Green Bay the snow stopped and Highway US41 was dry pavement all the way. I'm sure my ride on the Santa Fe's #23, the former "Grand Canyon" was approaching and I would depart Chicago for Kansas City, then take "The Tulsan" #211 back to Tulsa. Both trains would be gone at the beginning of next May as Amtrak took over.

Lake State Railway #469 sits dead and drained along with RS3m #974 on one of the finger tracks around the turntable in Saginaw. And that's the "Forty Six Nine", not "Four Sixty Nine", numbered for the year and month it was purchased by the Detroit & Mackinac. The unit is currently the last D&M Alco left on LSRC's property, owned by Waymore Power. While it doesn't seem to be in any danger of being cut up, it doesn't look like there is any hope of it being restored anytime soon, either. One of the former Bluewater NRHS Chapter's VIA dome observation cars sits at right, which has since been sold.

It’s a wintry day at Durand yard with Tuscola & Saginaw Bay RS2 466 and Central Michigan GP38AC 8803 standing by for the next call to duty. I’m not sure when TSBY sold 466 to the Michigan Southern, but this would probably be from before that. I would guess this would’ve been taken around 1990. This is a scanned print from my collection originally taken by Bruce Benson.

Alco RS-2 1:38 prototypical model of Union Pacific 1195 #76240 from 1949 built from LEGO. Last year I had erroneously made a 1:38 scale UP RS-3 with a number of inaccuracies. in September 2020 I started from scratch and modeled a specific Alco RS-2 (UP 1195) instead. Special attention was paid to designing the radiator and interior. It has AAR type b trucks with all axles powered. The Hood opens up to place either a model Alco 244 v12 4 cycle prime mover, or A battery box/control hub for motors and lights.Decals are locomotive and era specific. I also made some detailed instructions for this model just after I'd built it in September 2020. Instructions can be found here:

LV RS-2 #217 switches with the LV American crane at Rochester Jct. The LV had only a couple days left before -C- Day. On April 1 the rails fell silent with the exception of the branches to Rochester and Lima. The branch to Lima swings off to the left of the photo. Taken with a 110 instamatic.

With The Pinnacle looming in the background, this is most likely train #80 switching Blue Seal Feeds.
