We walked twelve kilometers in the vicinity of the De Blocq van Kuffeler pumping station at the Lepelaarsplassen in Almere. This largest pumping station in the Netherlands drained Southern Flevoland in just seven months. On October 25, 1967, the Blocq van Kuffeler was put into operation to drain the last of the three IJsselmeer polders. At that time, the level within the polder was 0.20 meters below NAP (Normal Amsterdam Level). Four diesel engines pumped 3100 m³ or 3.1 million liters of water per minute out of the polder. The 43,000 hectare polder Zuidelijk Flevoland was dry on 29 May 1968. The level had then dropped to 4.20 meters below NAP.
The Blocq van Kuffeler is one of the largest pumping stations in the world, measured by delivery height and capacity. The delivery height is the height over which a pump can pump liquid. Unlike the other pumping stations in Flevoland, the pumping station was not designed by architect Dirk Roosenburg, but was designed by engineer KFG Spruit in collaboration with the Dienst der Zuiderzee Works. The pumping station is built like the bridge of a ship, from where you look out over the water.
The pumping station itself is named after Victor Jean Pierre de Blocq van Kuffeler (1879 – 1963). Blocq van Kuffeler continued the work of Cornelis Lely, who died in 1929. He was involved in the reclamation of Southern Flevoland. In 2008 a start was made with an extensive renovation of the pumping station. The diesel engines were replaced by electric motors with a capacity of 1250 kilowatts. These motors drive the pumps without the intervention of a gearbox, increasing the capacity of the pumping station by ten percent. In addition, the electric motors are more maintenance-friendly. The new electric motors now jointly pump 4410 m³ or 4.41 million liters of water per minute from the polder. The renovated pumping station was reopened in early 2010.
And what happens when this pumping station shuts down? Do we have to go up on our roof? The chance that one or all pumping stations in the Netherlands will shut down at the same time is very small. This could happen if the power goes out everywhere. What can also go wrong is that pumping stations that can be turned on or off remotely can in theory be hacked. But that situation need not last long. Thanks to the alarm systems, it would soon be clear that something is wrong.
