They used to sell these fake car alarm kits in Halfords in the 80's, they consisted of a stick on keyhole, led and window stickers. Me and Rob used to laugh at them saying nobody would fall for that, that is until Rob had a car for a few years thinking it had an alarm that he had lost the key to until I give it a close inspection.

Pick up any newspaper with an article about public concerns and the subject of crime usually tops the list. It’s therefore surprising that homeowners and building contractors often don’t use the services of a professional locksmith to analyze security needs for their properties. For example, the most common practice in new home construction is to piecemeal the security precautions-using one company to set up an alarm system, an electrician to hook up outdoor lighting for crime prevention, and carpenters perhaps to install low–grade locks and door hardware almost as an afterthought. Often critical options such as door frame structure, door reinforcement or floor safes aren’t even thought of in time to incorporate those into the original building process.

“There are almost 10,000 members of the Associated Locksmiths of America-a number of which are certified locksmiths-available to builders, business owners and homeowners to ensure the physical safety of their property and, most important, their employees and families,” says Robert E. Mock, ALOA’s president. “It’s puzzling that owners make such substantial investments in their homes and businesses without taking care to secure them intelligently.” The issue is more significant than just correct installation techniques. A qualified locksmith can make recommendations on what physical and electronic systems need to be chosen in the first place.

Today, the security marketplace is flooded with options often unknown to those in fields outside locksmithing. Even a vendor in a related industry who is aware of a new security product is unlikely to have the judgment or qualifications of a highly trained and experienced locksmith. Mock also cites concern about the growing number of companies that are only aware of, and trained in, a narrow portion of security service. “More and more, we are seeing companies marketing themselves as security providers who have minimal exposure to the security industry as a whole. Especially with the rapid onset of electronic security in common applications, we are running into more individuals who have negligible training in physical security–they have learned overnight to install something that they do not really understand, and they have little or no background in deciding whether the product choice is appropriate for a particular application. Often they are employed by companies that only make or produce one product; therefore it is unlikely that a comprehensive security analysis is going to take place for the customer.

4/5/21 - Cary, Illinois

The state fire marshal was called to assist with the investigation into a well-engulfed house fire in Cary Monday morning that left a firefighter injured and a family dog missing.

The Cary Fire Protection District responded around 6:39 a.m. Monday to the 500 block of Holly Lynn Drive for a report of a structure fire.

Cary Fire Protection District Lt. Michael Douglass said an off-duty firefighter arrived on the scene first and confirmed the rear of a two-story home was well involved in fire.

Firefighters arrived and began a fire attack. No one was inside the house at the time of the fire.

Douglass said that the home is in an area that does not have any fire hydrants so firefighters had to set up for rural water supply operations using portable water pools.

The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to the first level to bring additional resources from neighboring towns to the scene.

The incident was later upgraded to a second alarm for more equipment and resources, Douglass said.

It took multiple hose lines as well as an elevated master stream to extinguish the fire, which was declared under control at 8:16 a.m.

Firefighters remained on the scene for several additional hours performing salvage and overhaul operations.

One firefighter was not feeling well and was transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington where he was treated and released. No civilians were injured.

The house was a complete loss but a damage estimate was not immediately available.

The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.

A total of 27 Cary Fire Protection District firefighters responded to the scene in addition to dozens of firefighters from other departments.

The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills, Barrington, Barrington-Countryside, Fox River Grove, Nunda Rural and Wauconda fire departments responded to the scene initially.

The Crystal Lake, East Dundee, Lake Zurich, Long Grove, McHenry, Mundelein, Palatine Rural, Rolling Meadows, Woodstock and Wonder Lake fire departments were called once the alarm was upgraded.

Cary’s fire station was covered by crews from Huntley and Carpentersville.

1/17/21 - Wonder Lake, Illinois

An occupant was found dead inside a home following an extra-alarm fire Saturday evening near Wonder Lake, authorities said.

The Wonder Lake Fire Protection District and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 10:13 p.m. Saturday to the 8000 block of West Route 120 in unincorporated Woodstock for a report of a structure fire.

The sheriff’s office received several 911 calls from people passing by that saw a house on fire, according to Wonder Lake Fire Chief Mike Weber.

Firefighters arrived and found the east side of the residence engulfed in flames that were approximately 10 feet above the roof, Weber said.

The blaze had extended from the first floor to the second floor of the residence and the home quickly became heavily engulfed in fire.

“We tried to make contact with any homeowners, everything was locked up and were unable to get inside,” Weber said.

The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to the second alarm level to bring additional firefighters and water tenders to the scene due to a lack of fire hydrants.

Firefighters pulled a hose line to extinguish the fire while other firefighters attempted to do an immediate search.

The heat inside the home was around 1,600 degrees and firefighters were unable to get inside.

The homeowner was initially unaccounted for and firefighters later located a deceased person inside the residence. An autopsy is being scheduled by the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.

The blaze caused approximately $300,000 in damage and left the home a total loss.

The fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature but it is under investigation by the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal, Wonder Lake Fire Protection District and the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.

5/1/21 - Wonder Lake, Illinois

A garage burned to the ground and spread to two homes, leaving one uninhabitable, Saturday afternoon in Wonder Lake, fire officials said.

The Wonder Lake Fire Protection District and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 4:30 p.m. Saturday to the 2900 block of East Chestnut Drive for a report of a structure fire.

Firefighters arrived on the scene to find an approximately 30-foot by 30-foot garage on fire which had two boats, two cars and motorcycles inside it.

Wonder Lake Fire Protection District Mike Weber said the burning garage, which was not attached to the home, quickly spread to the home.

While crews were fighting the blaze, a tree caught fire and a branch from it fell down on a nearby house, catching that home on fire as well.

The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to bring additional firefighters and equipment to the scene.

No injuries were reported and the first home that caught fire was deemed uninhabitable, while the second home that caught fire was deemed habitable.

It is not known what caused the blaze to start. A damage estimate was not immediately available.

10/21/2020 - Lakewood, Illinois

A Lakewood home was deemed a complete loss after a fire caused it to partially collapse and sustain $350,000 in damage, Crystal Lake fire officials said.

The Crystal Lake Fire-Rescue Department responded around 9:13 a.m. Wednesday to the 7100 block of Inverway Drive in Lakewood for a report of a structure fire.

Several 911 callers reported the house was well-involved in flames from the second floor.

Firefighters arrived and confirmed heavy fire conditions, according to Crystal Lake Deputy Fire Chief Chris Olsen.

The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated for additional assistance and firefighters initiated defensive operations due to the amount of fire and instability of the structure, Olsen said.

The residence was unoccupied because it was undergoing renovations. The structure partially collapsed during the blaze.

Olsen said the fire was declared under control at 11:04 a.m., just under two hours after firefighters arrived. The loss was estimated at $350,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but Olsen said it is not believed to be suspicious.

There were no civilian injuries reported but one firefighter sustained a minor injury at the scene.

The Lakewood and Crystal Lake police departments, as well as firefighters from Algonquin, Barrington-Countryside, Cary, Elgin, Fox River Grove, Huntley, Marengo, McHenry, Nunda-Rural, Union, Spring Grove, Wauconda, West Dundee, and Wonder Lake assisted at the scene. The Salvation Army also provided assistance.

You will find numerous cultivations of citruses, fruit trees and vegetable farms. The name of Alhaurin came from the Arabs, and after the conquest of the catholic kings, these would add “el Grande” to differentiate it from the other Alhaurin in Malaga, "Alhaurin de la Torre". Several cultures have passed through this place: Phoenicians, Romans, Visigoths and Arabs have settled in Alhaurin throughout history, although the human presence goes beyond, with Neolithic archaeological remains. The Greek presence provided methods to cultivate the lands of Alhaurin el Grande and prune vineyards, something that achieved an increase of the local population and the trade. The romans created different settlements inside Alhaurin el Grande, amongst them we can highlight ‘Fuente del Sol’ and ‘la Huerta del NiÑo’ (where they found a tombstone of a young roman); in these settlements, numerous archaeological remains have been found although the most important of all is the aqueduct on the Coin road.nnAmongst the benefits that the Arabs brought to Alhaurin el Grande, we can highlight an increase of trade, agriculture and cattle farming in the area. They created several buildings in Alhaurin el Grande, like the mosque for example, that we could see if it weren’t for the Christian temple built after the conquest. We’ll also find, amongst the most important remains, the well-known Castillo de la Reina (the queen’s castle), today almost completely disappeared, that was used by the Queen Isabel after the conquest. Alhaurin el Grande was an important location during the Al-Andalus period, and was also the culture that named it "Alhaur", which means "the valley people".nnFrom Malaga you can reach Alhaurin el Grande in 30-40 minutes by car (28 km).

A sprinkler alarm system by Star Sprinkler Corporation, on the side of a building in Nashua, New Hampshire. After 100 years in business the Star Sprinkler Corporation was purchased by Tyco International in 1996.

Last weekend we went to Biltmore Estate. For those of you who have never visited there, it is definitely worth the visit. It was built before 1900 by George Vanderbilt. It is the largest privately owned residence in the country. I do not know the square footage but there are 256 rooms in it.

We went and did the audio tour with headsets and the information on the rooms we were looking at, was facinating. Even though it was built before the turn of the century and was in the middle of virtually no where, they had electricity, a telephone system, a fire alarm system that would tell them what zone the fire was in, central heat, clothes washer, dryer, elevator, bowling alley, indoor pool, cantilevered stairs and lots more.

Of course now they do lots of tours through it and my husband asked someone, how much renovation had been done on the inside and he said almost none. The paint and wallpapers and bedding are orginal with maybe a little touchup here or there. It is in pristine condition.

Go to see it if you have the chance and do the audio tour. A bit pricey at $48 each but you can also do the gardens and winery. The wine tasting was pretty good too......

This looks great in large size. I will put other exterior photos on later. We were not allowed to take any inside.

Almost forgot, they also have two original Renoir's in one of the bedrooms...fabulous!!
