The starling is no ordinary, everyday bird, because it has outstanding talents: the starling can imitate other birds and environmental noises perfectly and incorporate them into its song. You can even hear cell phone ring tones, dog barks or alarm systems. It also becomes a star among birds thanks to its breathtaking swarm formations, in which hundreds of thousands of individuals glide through the air in perfect coordination.
The investment in my mobile intruder alarm system paid off bigtime. Translation: the dogs were barking up a storm which prompted me to investigate the cause of this. My decision to not store my photo equipment in assorted lens and camera storing compartments but to leave it easily accessible on the coffee table proved to be right on point as well. Once I discovered the reason for the alert (this was not easily accomplished since I scanned the yard at a much lower level than where the saw-whet owl was actually located – top of the swinging bench), I just needed to extricate my camera from other urgently needed items (clutter) on my coffee table. The owl was completely oblivious to mine and the dogs’ presence, being utterly preoccupied in deciding on the best angle of attack for a delicious mouse dinner. The owl and I have a bit of a symbiotic relationship. She keeps the mouse population under control on the outside of the house (my cat does the inside) and I get to use her as a bit of a decorative item for various yard structures, in this case the hanging swing bench. This image was taken about 15 minutes before it got too dark to shoot at reasonable ISOs.
Even though the mouse population may disagree with this, I find lots of things that are sweet about her.

I don't have many freebies lying around, so my choice was pretty limited – which isn't necessarily a bad thing, especially when it comes to MMs :) In fact, my two possible subjects were a red RFID-safe envelope for credit cards and the cap of an old all-metal ballpen. Since neither the material (regarding its surface texture) nor the imprint on the RFID envelope looked interesting in close-up, my "choice" was an easy one this time – aka the best choice sometimes is no choice ;)
The pen cap I've photographed for "Swag" is lacquered in a very beautiful, shiny, deep blue tone, a hue between dark and royal blue, and the company's name is printed onto the cap in thin golden letters. It says "Knorr Alarm und Elektronik GmbH" (which I probably don't have to translate for you; the English equivalent for "GmbH" is Ltd.). The company Knorr is specialised in key and lockout services and all kinds of security/safety technologies such as locks, alarm systems, smoke detectors... You name it, they've got it.
The part of the pen cap and clip you can see in my photo is about 3 cm / 1,18 inches long which also is the width of the frame. It's a single shot, and the most tricky part here was to get the angle of view so that only a small part of the lettering is legible and the rest dissolves into nice bokeh. I focused on "Alarm" simply because that word is similar (or identical) in many languages and doesn't need a translation. Processed in DXO PL6, Lightroom with a little bit of Color Efex magic as a finishing touch.
HMM, Everyone!
Why spend all that money on security alarm systems to keep your house safe from intruders, when you can just grow vines.
I know some of you will say, “just get a dog to protect your property.” Which is on the whole a decent suggestion, but what about Chihuahuas or other small dogs, who could be stepped on. Also, there are those really friendly dogs, who would lick an intruder and sit for a treat with tail wagging.
No! I am afraid the best solution is vines or briars.
How many robbers have the wherewithal to carry a chainsaw with them. They would just pass you by.
This house is so well protected that they can leave their door open a crack without fear of a break in.
Home protection is quite a racket these days. Remember when everyone just had a dog.
Years later, houses were set up with alarm systems that would blast people out of the neighborhood if you forgot the code. You had to call the home protection company quickly before the police were dispatched.
Next came the camera systems that are controlled by your phone. You can sit at work and look at the front of your house all day or see if a delivery service is kicking your packages around.
In rural America, we have different ways of deterring criminals. Remember the concrete well housing placed discreetly a couple of feet in from the front door. Trip over that and you would break your kneecaps or legs.
This house has a unique alarm system. You just plant a cactus garden in front of the door. It works very well in the dark. You can hear the burglars screaming as they try to remove the cactus spines from their legs. You could add a small dog to herd the trespassers into the cactus patch, or even add a shotgun.
Either way the rural folks get it done! HWW
A different perch of this beautiful little owl....I made a daily walk around this park every morning , early in the day I discovered this park not long after we arrived at the hotel that we stayed at in Huatulco Mexico...I heard the littl e owl calling from a distance and at first I thought it might be the pulse of an alarm system of some type...their vocalizations are similar ...I spent a little bit of time with it for the last few days that we were in Mexico...Now I WANT to go back to see if it survived and had little ones....Im pretty sure there were a pair of them...when one was at the cavity in the tree there was another one calling from a distance...my first time laying eyes on this owl species...I couldn't believe the luck I had to find it and be able to photograph it so easily.!
I need an alarm system in my house
So I know when people are
Creeping about
These people are
Freaking me out (these days)
It’s getting hectic everywhere that I go
They won’t leave me alone
There’s things they all wanna know
I'm paranoid of all the people I meet
Why are they talking to me?
And why can’t anyone see
I just wanna live
Don’t really care about the things that they say
Don’t really care about what happens to me
I just wanna live
Just wanna live [x6]
I rock a
Lawsuit when I’m going to court
A white suit when I’m gettin’ divorced
A black suit at the funeral home
And my birthday suit when I’m home alone
Talkin’ on the phone
Got an interview
With the rolling stone
They’re saying
“Now you’re rich and
Now you’re famous
Fake ass girls all know your name and
Lifestyles of the rich and famous
Your first hit aren’t you ashamed?”
Of the life [x2]
Of the life we’re livin’
I just wanna live
Don’t really care about the things that they say
Don’t really care about what happens to me
I just wanna live
Stop your messin’ around boy
Better think of your future
Better make some good plans boy
Said everyone of my teachers
Lookout
You better play it safe
You never know what hard times will come your way
We say
Where we’re coming from
We’ve already seen
The worst that this life can bring
Now we expect it everywhere that we go
All the things that they say
Yeah we already know
I just wanna live
Don’t really care about the things that they say
Don’t really care about what happens to me
Just wanna live [x3]
I just wanna live
Just wanna live [x3]
I just wanna live
Just wanna live [x3]
Don’t really care about the things that they say
Just wanna live [x3]
Don’t really care about what happens to me
I just wanna live

Be forewarned... Our house is protected by not only an alarm system, but also by a vicious attack puppy! Introducing "Sicily!" She is a 10 week old Cavapoo puppy (1/2 poodle, 1/2 cavalier king charles spaniel). Her specialty is being cute, and she excels at that! For more about Cavapoos, see : www.vetstreet.com/dogs/cavapoo#overview
This peacock is pretty to look at, but wow can they yell. A fellow photographer uses peacocks on their farm as a sort of alarm system. They yell whenever an unknown person shows up on their property.
The Carlinville Old City Hall on W. Main St. was built in 1897 with offices upstairs along with the meeting room. Below held the Police Department in a long thin area that led to the cells. The firehouse was on the right side of the building and the doors swung open inside to allow the fire apparatus to leave. Early on, of course, they were water wagons with ladders led by horses. They backed the wagons into the building so the horses could be hitched up.
In 1953, the Carlinville Moose Lodge volunteered to buy and furnish the city with a new and long desired siren. The new alarm system replaced the antiquated bell atop City Hall in sounding fire alarms and police calls. The original bell is on display outside the current firehouse.
After the police and fire departments moved out to their own buildings, the City moved its business end of things downstairs into the vacated space. The upstairs was used as a storage area for 20 cots, in case a temporary hospital needed to be set up, along with space to store police evidence. This building saw continued use as a city office into the 1990s.
Carlinville is the seat of Macoupin County in south central Illinois. At the 2020 census, the population of Carlinville was 5,710.

The crested pigeon has successfully made the transition from an inland bird to an urban bird. Once restricted to arid and semi-arid zones of this country inland - it is now also seen as a feature of our towns and cities.
Their most distinctive behaviour is the beating and whistling sound their wings make when they take off. I learned that the sound is produced by the air passing over a modified primary feather on the wing. This could be an alarm system to other pigeons in regard any predators or danger within the vicinity.

it was so quiet back in the woods the other day when the cats and I took our walk. We were all trying to move noiselessly down the path so we wouldn't spook any potential prey, but this little wren gave the game away.
He may have given me a pass if I'd stayed quiet and still, but once he spotted the cats, it was all over. Cats will NOT be tolerated!! He chattered away in the overhead branches alerting every other creature around we were there.
Obby is blessed with a beautiful set of large magnificent ears in which to hear even the slightest sounds relating to his food...it could be the rustle of a plastic bag of kibble, the quiet filling his food bowl, opening a can of wet food, the spoon from the drawer, or (lol) opening the refrigerator. Given this quality in my orange boy, he would be an outstanding security alarm system.....properly trained, of course. Happy Caturday to all our friends.
old fire alarm system no longer in use. Really had zero devices I am willing to open up for this task other than this one.
This is a macro image of an old school electric switch.
These particular switches are movement triggered.
They may well have been used on alarm systems many years ago.
The liquid metal mercury inside the sealed switch on movement makes a circuit and triggers the switch.
The lenght of the switch measures just 1 inch .... therfore way within measurement requirements.
Love ❤️ & Peace Everyone!
When I photographed the car, the headlights flashed briefly and the sentry mode activated.
Because if the vehicle detects a significant threat, the cameras in the vehicle start recording and the alarm system activates. The owner will be notified by the Tesla app that an incident has occurred. 😎👍
Colorado Springs, CO - These poor domestic mixed up "quackers" were probably dumped at this pond, but they are doing their best to survive and I find them hilarious. Almost like an alarm system, they seek out anyone who may approach the water and commence begging for food. Many of the Mallards (about half their size) will follow their lead, but the migrating wild birds move away from the commotion making it a bit of a challenge to find the right spot from which to photograph them.
Hi friends ♥ Putting together a quick post tonight, because Maui needs our help.
As you may have heard, the town Lahaina in Maui was ravaged by a storm and a rapidly burning wildfire. The alarm system failed. Over 100 people have lost their lives, and another 1000 are missing. There’s going to be a lengthy search and assessment, but in the meantime, thousands of locals have nothing. No home, no belongings and no food.
Second Life is doing what it does best, coming together to help people in every way we can. Organizers and creators came together quickly to help raise money. As of 4pm SLT on 8/19/23, we’ve raised nearly half a million linden for the Maui Food Bank. 100% of EVERY DONATION AND SALE will go to help the people of Maui. You can read more about the event here:
As soon as I learned about it I popped over, to see how I could help. I made a donation and then I bought some items (100% of the proceeds are donated). A quick post tonight to show you some of what’s available, and encourage you strongly to head over and help.

On Axiom5, Adrienne and Kayla worked alongside the Arcturiaen science team as they scanned for signs of the reptilian nest.
The concussion of missiles being intercepted and detonated rattled through the ship. Lights flickered and a hint of acrid smoke crept into the room. The ship had not returned to level since an earlier missile impact and listed to one side.
“That makes 126 sites across the southwestern United States that we have scanned,” reported Edlon, the lead science officer, his voice clipped with fatigue. “No anomalous heat signatures. Not a single viable nest candidate. Shall we widen the search?”
Adrienne leaned forward. “How deep can your sensors penetrate?”
“Maximum depth is approximately one sector,” he replied. “That’s about one of your miles. Sensitivity depends on local density and magnetic properties of the soil.”
Kayla’s brow furrowed. “That won’t be enough.” She shot Adrienne a look—tight, frustrated. “The nest could be buried far deeper.”
Adrienne turned back to Edlon. “Then maybe we’re looking in the wrong way. What if we trace the underground tunnel networks instead? Look for a central hub—something accessible, strategic.”
“I’ll have my team run the overlay,” he said, as he stood walking down to another team member.
Kayla’s voice dropped to a whisper. “Just as I feared. They’ve got no data on reptilian biology. No nesting behavior. If their scans can’t reach it, we’re flying blind.”
Adrienne nodded grimly. “Then we need the coordinates of every site they’ve scanned. We jump back, investigate ourselves. At least we’d have something more to work with.”
“Over here,” Edlon called. “This site—look.” He pointed to the screen. “Thirty-two tunnels converge across four adjacent zones. And it sits directly on the intersection of two ley lines.”
Kayla’s eyes lit with recognition. “Of course! They’d be drawn to ley lines. What are the coordinates?”
Adrienne studied the map lit on the computer screen, which lacked identifying boundaries or names. “I’m not positive but judging by those rivers I think that’s Arizona. "What are the coordinates?”
Before he could answer, the ship’s alarm system erupted. A voice boomed through the comms: “Missiles inbound. Brace for impact”
Axiom5’s defense systems intercepted and detonated missiles but were unable to stop them all.
A direct hit. And another. The ship lurched violently. Adrienne and Kayla clung to the console as Edlon barked, “hang on!”
Two, more intense explosions followed—one dangerously close. The ship rolled to the side, tossing everyone.
The lights flickered. Then darkness.
Emergency systems kicked in, casting the room in a red glow.
But the screens stayed dark—blank. After a few moments Adrienne’s voice cut through the silence. “Eldon, did you get the coordinates of that site?”
Edlon shook his head, grim. “The system crashed before I could retrieve them. We’re trying to get the computers back.”
Adrienne retrieved her VDD, brow furrowed. The device pulsed in her hand, a strange light flickering on its surface.
Adrienne whispered to Kayla, who leaned over to look. “It vibrated… and that light—I’ve never seen it before.”
Kayla squinted at the display, then gasped. “It’s detected another VDD!”

The classic EuroCities over the Brenner Pass are now inevitably coming to an end. Over the course of the year, the trainsets will be converted to Railjets. The reason for this is that ÖBB's so-called upgrade wagons do not have a fire alarm system, which is now mandatory in Italy. The carriages are also getting on in years and not much is being invested in their maintenance. This was also evident on 14 January 2024 on the EC 87 from Munich main station to Bologna C, which only had six wagons instead of the scheduled eight, as ÖBB is also plagued by a shortage of long-distance material. The photo was taken in the snow-covered Inn Valley near Brannenburg, the train locomotive was first-of-series 1216.001.

Today's sunset. Yesterday around sunset we got a lightning strike that knocked out the Internet and phone and toasted the alarm system. (Strangely, the computers were unaffected.) I spent about an hour with my new BFF at Comcast explaining that my phone wasn't working and all the lights were flashing on the modem. She went through her checklist (e.g.: "Is the phone plugged in? Have you tried another outlet? We don't see any problems on our end",... etc. etc.) Finally she scheduled a service visit for this morning. The guy showed up on time and replaced the modem. I'll have to deal with the alarm system next week. So if you're planning a heist, this weekend would be good. :-)

This stocky plover breeds in high Arctic zones around the world, and winters on the coasts of six continents. During the summer breeding season, males have a striking black face, chest and belly. Females can resemble the males or be more on the mottled side.
They are ground nesting birds and when predators approach they will either move away from the nest and use a broken-wing trick to distract them or they will mob the predator.
Their diet in summer is mostly insects, but that changes in winter to include a variety of worms, crustaceans and bivalves (clams, etc.). They're extremely wary birds and act as an alarm system of sorts in mixed groups of birds.
This BBP (GP) was enjoying a tasty treat on the North Beach, Fort De Soto, Florida. If you are interested in viewing it large you can get a better view of this tasty treat and if anyone knows what it is I would be very interested to know.
It was taken last November so I'm not sure if it's an adult in winter, non-breeding plumage or if it's an immature.
As always, thank you so much for stopping by and for leaving any comments or faves, they are very much appreciated.

This lone Sea Lion appeared to be perched high on a large rock 'looking out' over the crowd that were swimming. Orcas have been known in the area so it could possibly be an early alarm system.
Our guide remarked that it was sitting on top of 'Mexican Snow' obviously referring to the large amount of bird droppings on the rock.

The eighth and final species I was able to photograph during our western South Dakota is this Ferruginous Hawk.
My wife and I were hanging out in the four-wheel rolling rental blind on the edge of a prairie dog town, in Badlands National Park and I was hoping to capture a jump yip. Stay tuned tomorrow for the rest of that story.
Suddenly the prairie dog alarm system kicked into high gear, and we heard multiple high pitched alarm vocalizations nearly simultaneously. Every prairie dog in sight was below ground in their burrows in a matter of a couple of seconds.
Then this Hawk flashed across the town just a few feet above the ground. When it landed, I wasn’t sure if it had nailed a prairie dog or not. I aimed the 500mm lens at him/her and waited. After about a minute, the hawk launched with empty talons. A miss. I started my burst in time to get the actual liftoff but its nictating membrane obscured the eye, so that one didn’t make the cut. This was a couple of frames later.
This was the first time I witnessed a full-blown red alert in a prairie dog town, and I was very impressed with how effective it was. A remarkable nature experience.
I’d like a little more detail on this hawk, but it was taken at quite distance…so this is what I got.
when we see the plane plummeting in our minds, we imagine the moments of terror, the moments that must feel like hours. i can’t understand why, after all these years, we haven’t earned some sort of alarm system in the house of the supreme being so that when people are about to experience terror, they simply black out. isn’t losing one’s life enough? given the milleniums of prayer and offerings and assorted chit chat going back and forth with the guy in the back room, surely we could arrange for this small favor.
