Ai Weiwei is one of the most significant and recognised artists working today..
This exhibition, developed in collaboration with the artist, is the first to present his work as a commentary on design and what it reveals about our changing values. Through his engagement with material culture, Ai explores the tension between past and present, hand and machine, precious and worthless, construction and destruction.
The exhibition draws on Ai's fascination with historical Chinese artefacts, placing their traditional craftsmanship in dialogue with the more recent history of demolition and urban development in China.

With this rendition of a traditional Chinese dragon kite, Ai Wei Wei uses an ancient art form to referencea stark contemporary reality. The artwork features stylized renderings of birds and plants that are icons for nations with records of violating human rights and civil liberties.
China doesn't appear to have the Western culture of architect superstars, although many famous foreign architects are currently working on flagship projects in Beijing so the culture looks set to change.
The (superstar) artist Ai Weiwei has worked with several architects (both Chinese and Western), consulting particularly on materials. Here at the Three Shadows Photography Gallery he has considered the detail of the facade in a way that seems to bridge between craftsman and architect.

One part of the installation was only viewable through old and broken glass from a walkway on the side of the building. It's a wing, and on the wings are Tibetan teapots, a reference to the continued subjugation of the Tibetan people under Chinese rule.
