This is an art exhibition of Chinese political decedent Ai Wei Wei which was held at Alcatraz. It is the faces of all the people in the world who were one time or another were in prison. It is made of Legos. Chinese government will not issue a passport to Ai Wei Wei so his assistants had to carry out his work.
PLEASE FEEL TO COMMENT
Seems to me the whole point of the 'recent' decision (well in Sept) was to drum up publicity for Ai Weiwei and his upcoming build and it has been achieved – I don’t dislike him for it, I admire that he has achieved his aim. He's an awesome artist and campaigner.
The ‘banned’ from using LEGO or ‘refusing to supply’ is related to a direct bulk order from an artist. Not many people direct buy in bulk from LEGO and, as a business, it’s their right to limit what this is used for…want to build a 50ft Christmas tree in a city – okay, want to make a political statement – not okay.
He can walk into any LEGO store and buy as many bricks as he likes, or Megablocks or Kreo or whatever else kind of bricks. What he actually wants is media attention, publicity and controversy and he wouldn’t get that by walking into a shop and buying LEGO or Megablocks for that matter.
His media campaign has been well done and it has worked thus far, I’m just surprised that anyone thinks that a toy manufacturer should be upholding his right to freedom of speech, he can do that himself (as he has proven in the past) without help from LEGO

“… to me, the Coca Cola logo is a clear announcement of property, and of cultural or political identity; but it is also a clear sign to stop thinking. It’s full of ignorance, but it’s also a redefinition”
Ai Weiwei 2013
One of China's most influential artists, this is his first ever gallery collection to appear in the UK, monumental artworks spanning two decades, drawing on his experiences as a political prisoner, giving him a voice on creative freedom, censorship and human rights.
This is one of his most recent works, 'Bicycle Chandelier'.
An honour to meet one of the most prolific contemporary artists around, Ai Weiwei. Ai Weiwei was staging an art performance at London’s Hyde Park (10 December 2022), signing blank sheets of A4 paper with invisible UV ink and distributing them free at Speakers’ Corner.
The event was the renowned Chinese artist and dissident’s way of recognising Human Rights Day, which 'marks the anniversary of the drafting of the University Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. It’s an occasion ‘to review and re-understand the meaning and value of human rights."

I'm not usually a huge fan of "Xeroxing" an artist's work in this way, but I hope Ai Weiwei would approve
Tenuous link: a lone bird
This work, which resembles a giant snake, is formed from commonly used student backpacks in various sizes (representing children from elementary school through junior high) laid out as a requiem for the school children and thousands of other people who perished in the May 12, 2008 Sichuan earthquake.
Ai Weiwei is a contemporary Chinese artist and activist known for his work addressing human rights and freedom of speech. He currently lives and works in Portugal.
The snake in Chinese culture is a paradoxical figure—both revered and feared, embodying transformation, wisdom, and mystery. By constructing the snake from student backpacks, Ai Weiwei fuses cultural symbolism with raw political commentary. The backpacks are literal remnants of lives lost, and the snake becomes a vessel of collective memory—slithering through the gallery space like a ghost of accountability. The snake is not just mourning, it’s watching. It’s winding through the institutional space, refusing to be ignored.

These plates are two in a series of six depicting the perils of modern migration. For these works, Ai relies on the mastery of today’s cobalt painters able to work in the style of historical blue -and-white porcelain. Ai applies their skills to a contemporary subject, connecting the present crisis to the long history of migration.

Capturing the political and social reality of today, is Weiwei's constant quest. HIs current focus: the global refugee crisis.
