ishwarya Rai ou Aishwarya Rai Bachchan est une actrice et mannequin indienne.
Alors qu'elle effectue durant son adolescence des études d'architecture, Aishwarya Rai débute le mannequinat à mi-temps. Les expériences professionnelles dans ce milieu s'enchaînent alors rapidement, et elle devient une égérie de la marque Pepsi dans son pays. Le couronnement de sa carrière de modèle arrive en 1994, année où la jeune femme devient Miss Monde.
Bollywood s'intéresse dès lors rapidement à cette beauté indienne aux yeux gris-verts. Celle-ci fait ses débuts cinématographiques dans le drame Iruvar en 1997, une performance dont elle retire de bonnes premières critiques. La comédienne tourne alors dans une vingtaine de longs métrages jusqu'en 2003, année où sort son premier film en France : le flamboyant Devdas. Le rôle de la belle et fière Paro lui permet de remporter son deuxième Filmfare Award, l'équivalent de nos César en Inde, ainsi qu'une reconnaissance internationale. Elle devient ainsi membre du jury du 56e Festival de Cannes sous la présidence de Patrice Chéreau.
Suite à cette expérience, Aishwarya Rai s'essaye peu à peu aux productions occidentales. La transition se fait d'abord dans son premier film tourné en anglais, Coup de foudre à Bollywood, qui mêle le cinéma traditionnel indien à l'histoire d'Orgueil et préjugés de Jane Austen. Tout en poursuivant sa carrière en Inde, elle se fait alors une place à Hollywood en tournant des films aussi variés que le film d'aventure La Dernière légion ou la comédie La Panthère Rose 2 dans lequel elle donne la réplique à Steve Martin et Jean Reno.
