Valley of the Gods is a scenic sandstone valley near Mexican Hat in San Juan County, southeastern Utah. It is north of Monument Valley across the San Juan River, and has similar rock formations to Monument Valley, albeit on a smaller scale, with tall, red, isolated mesas, buttes, and cliffs standing above the level valley floor, remnants of an ancient landscape.
The Valley of the Gods area may be toured via a 17-mile (27 km) gravel road (FR 242) that winds amongst the eerie formations; this is rather steep and bumpy in parts but is passable by normal vehicles in good and dry weather. The western end joins UT 261 shortly before its 1,200-foot (370 m) ascent up Cedar Mesa at Moki Dugway, while the eastern end starts 9 miles (14 km) from the town of Mexican Hat along US 163 and heads north, initially crossing flat, open land and following the course of Lime Creek, a seasonal wash, before turning west towards the buttes and pinnacles. In addition to the gravel road, the area is also crisscrossed by off-road dirt trails.
The valley is not a park, but public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management. There are no services in the valley, except for a bed-and-breakfast located near the western end of FR 242.
The valley has been used as the backdrop for numerous western movies, television shows, and commercials, including:
The 1984-1987 CBS TV show Airwolf is often mistakenly identified as being filmed in The Valley of the Gods (due to an in episode mention) but was in fact filmed in Monument Valley.
Two episodes of the BBC science fiction TV show Doctor Who were filmed in The Valley of the Gods: "The Impossible Astronaut" and "Day of the Moon", the second of which includes an explicit on-screen reference to the filming location.

Darüber hinaus wurden im Valley of the Gods zwei Episoden der BBC-Science-Fiction-Serie Doctor Who gedreht.

Can you hear the theme from an old TV show - "Airwolf"? ;)

Finally, decent pictures, after my quick snap on Saturday.
As a child I was a huge fan of the TV series Airwolf, so it was a great pleasure for me to finally build 'The Lady', as part of my collection of movie and TV vehicles.
Dennis Bosman paid me a visit yesterday and took his photography equipment along (something to do with a book he's working on). He took a couple of pictures of Airwolf with a nice dark background.
More Lingotto? Yeah, more Lingotto.
This is the top of the former FIAT Lingotto factory and this was a test track. These big blue tubes in the middle of the track were added later. I think these are airconditioning exhausts for the hotel/ shopping center/ offices that are now making use of the building.
On the right is a big glass dome that you can rent to have a party or use as conference area. Great views over the city! Behind that is a helipad.
Imaging having a wedding up there. You let all the guest wait in the dome. The bride and groom come flying in in an Airwolf and land on the helipad. youtu.be/ULfmowbNlK0
Rest in peace, Jan-Michael Vincent.

These are my Airwolf and Blue Thunder models, both built to a scale of approximately 1/22.
I remember that, back when I was eight or nine, a classmate told me that German television had started broadcasting a new show with a helicopter that was even cooler than Blue Thunder, my favourite at the time. I didn't believe him.

Taken from Oxfordshire, UK with a Canon 1100D with 300mm zoom lens. ISO-400 for 1/1250 seconds at f/5.6.
I was out photographing the rising January Full Moon, also known as the Wolf Moon, which is due to have a penumbral eclipse later, when I noticed what I thought was a low aircraft heading straight for the Moon. I quickly changed the shutter speed to something faster and kept shooting. When I reviewed I realised it was a helicopter! I've imaged aeroplane transits before but this is my first helicopter transit.
Three images had the helicopter in (I was shooting in RAW and the write to card time meant I only got three images of the helicopter.) Those three images aligned using PIPP and layered together using Photoshop CS2. The images were aggressively cropped and then processed in Lightroom and Fast Stone Image Viewer.
I studied Flight Radar to see if I could ID this aircraft but there wasn't anything showing on this flight path from my location. But an aircraft spotter on Twitter things it was a Leonardo AW series possibly AW169 or AW189. There was a Leonardo AW169 that came over on the flight path to Kidlington Airport but according to Flight Radar it didn't came straight over from the North rather than swinging around to the East where the Moon was rising. So I'm still unsure if this was the aircraft I caught.
EDIT: Having been in contact with HelliHub, they are pretty certain that this was a Leonardo AW169 and it was the Children's Air Ambulance, Reg: G-TCAA
The Lady is done.
However, I can't take any more (decent pictures) because I am running out of daylight. I took just a few quick snaps, of which this is the nicest one.
Finishing the build took a lot of time today. I still had to build the interior and rotor hub and I had to make changes to the guns (not visible in this picture, obviously). The two shorter guns ought to sit above the longer barrelled 40 mm, but sat below it on my prototype. Also, my fancy mechanism for the ventral missile launcher jammed every once in a while yesterday. This took about an hour to fix, but fortunately only required a few very small changes in the end (moving two hinge points by half a brick). Finally, I changed the lower intakes, blending their upper lips into the fairings that run along the sides of the fuselage a bit better.
More pictures, hopefully, tomorrow.
I like when people see my models and incorporate some of my ideas into their own. It's cool. I also look at other people's models and they often inspire me. What's not cool is pretending that ideas you got elsewhere are your own. And what's even less cool is copying somebody else's models and selling them and, when confronted, playing stupid. Case in point: this guy. The comparison shows nine examples of models that I designed that he copied and is actually selling via facebook as designs "he created". Credit where credit is due, the reverse engineering can't have been easy. That said, the bits where his models are different are usually the ones where he failed.
For the record: he is the owner of his images, but I claim fair use of them here to illustrate what he is doing.
SUBJECT: AIRWOLF

- twin engine
SPEED: - Mach 1
ARMS: - ADF Pod ( Hellfire/Redeye/Copperhead)
- Sunburst/Flares/Chaff
- SIDE Pods (Browning M1919)7,62&40mm machine guns
Another of those creations that gets a revamp after
another couple of years is obviously something that
had the best 80s TV theme i can think of.
"AIRWOLF is a Mach One plus attack chooper, that can kick bud!" is a phrase in the pilot.
So finally this model is in minifigscale with full interior,
replacable landing gear/weaponary, a stand with posing flight position stabilizer
and a nameplate with the AIRWOLF logo for presentation.
Stay tuned!

I've been thinking about building a Blackbird for perhaps as many as ten years now, pretty much ever since my friend Ed Diment took apart his. I bought books, made drawings and even bought parts but there were always other things that distracted me. And the parts always ended up being used for other models, in particular all the black movie cars I built over the years, as well as Airwolf. However, I am still building models for a collaboration on experimental military models and have decided to finally take a swing at an experimental Blackbird variant: the M-21, which served as the mother ship for the D-21 reconnaissance drone, as part of project "Tagboard". An added advantage is that the first of the two airplanes wasn't actually all black, but much of it was unpainted titanium, which is grey to the eye.
Besides Ed's Blackbird there are several others that I've taken a look at and that will undoubtedly influence some features of this build, but I am still mainly doing my own thing. For instance, I want cockpit with the right shape and with windows and yet I also want enough room inside for a minifig pilot and the launch control officer, who sat in the aft cockpit. These are tricky requirements on a 1/40 scale model, but I'm pretty much there. The next challenge will be to find enough space for the main undercarriage. I managed to come up with fairly compact design for the how the wheels are attached to their struts, but it's also fragile, so I'll have to see how it'll handle the weight.
Airwolf was a hi-tech military helicopter disguised as corporate executive helicopter. It was armed with a retractable ventral rocket launcher and three machine guns that could be retracted into the sponsons/stub wings. On my model the missile launcher can be retracted, but there is not nearly enough space in the sponsons for the guns. The guns can be easily detached, however, after which the panels that they are attached to can be retracted.
This is another of Dennis' pictures.
I was feeling a bit under the weather today, so I didn't build much, but I did make a lot of progress on my Airwolf model over the weekend.
I have a nicely working mechanism for the missile launcher and its cover. It takes up a lot of space, which does mean I don't have room for the weapons station.
Building the windscreen and the cockpit doors took a lot of time, but the nose is taking shape. It is still hollow, though, and I haven't finished the chin windows or nose gear bay and I still need to add the refuelling probe.
A young couple find a moment to embrace in front of the spinning Airwolf ride whilst visiting Cambridge Midsummer Fair.
Travelling fairs and funfairs have long been popular with romantic couples. Not only do they offer the opportunity for displays of skill and bravado, but many rides scare, or jostle couples into close contact. Historically, many travelling fairs are associated with festivals or feast days - and these are also times when social mores may be relaxed a little.

There was a time, sometimes referred to as “The Nineteen Eighties”, when nothing was cooler than a helicopter. Hot cars? Sure. But the most extreme, the most awesomely radical heroes, all rode or piloted helicopters. They had ridiculous names like “Stringfellow Hawke”, and it didn’t even matter, because they were pilots, and had experimental stealth attack helicopters hiding inside mountains.
And the actual pilots, the stunt pilots that pushed these machines in between buildings, or into car chases under bridges and power lines? Pretty much all of them were Vietnam veterans. Probably no coincidence most of the show characters were ex-Vietnam vets turned private eyes. That was cool, too.
Unfortunately a couple of high profile on-set accidents (Twilight Zone: The Movie was the most tragic) led to significant safety reform, and that was pretty much the end of helicopters in tv or film as anything other than transportation. Now whenever you see an actor near a running helicopter, the rotors are CG, and if the budget is low they don’t even spring for the wind machine to blow their hair around.
But I’ll never forget that special time, the era when cars chased helicopters chasing cars.
Not a montage this time, but a single shot showing all the film and TV series vehicles and figures I've built so far.
I still intend to do build Airwolf, Magnum PI's Ferrari, and perhaps the CHiPs motorcycles and the pickup truck used in The Fall Guy. I'm currently also working on two vehicles to bridge the gap between this film and TV-series theme and my collection of British vehicles, by building the Jag mk2 used in Inspector Morse and, possibly, Mr. Bean's Mini.
I'd like to think they're recognisable, but for those of you who weren't around in the Eighties (or have been living under a rock), the cars are from left to right: The GMC Vandura from the A-Team, the Ferrari Testarossa from Miamy Vice, the General Lee (a Dodge Charger) from The Dukes of Hazzard, the Bluesmobile (1974 Dodge Monaco) from Blues Brothers, the DeLorean Time Machine from Back to the Future, Ecto-1 (a 59 Cadillac ambulance/hearse conversion) from Ghostbusters and, finally, K.I.T.T. from Knight Rider.

The Avtek 400A was a prototype turboprop-powered business aircraft developed in the United States in the early 1980s. It was of unusual and distinctive configuration - a low-wing monoplane with two pusher engines mounted above the wings, and a large canard mounted atop the forward fuselage. The aircraft's sleek, futuristic design earned it a guest appearance on the Airwolf TV series as the X-400, the plane used by the villain Lou Stappleford in the episode Eagles.
The Avtek's structure made extensive use of advanced composite materials throughout.
In 1998, Avtek declared bankruptcy without the prototype having completed the testing required for US FAA type certification. The company's assets were purchased by AvtekAir, who as of 2004 were planning to revive the project under the designation AvtekAir 9000T.
The flyable helicopter used in the TV series was a Bell 222 with a few extra bits added. The basic helicopter is one of the sleekest corporate helicopters around and the black and white paint scheme on Airwolf seems to emphasize this a bit more.
Part of the fun of building movie vehicles on a reasonably large scale (1/22) is that I also get to build the characters to go with them.
The cockpit doors on the model can be opened, but it is a tricky operation. I first have to straighten the widow, then pull out the door and then push the window back again. Ho hum, it looks okay.
Since I don't have to work tomorrow, I spent a few hours this evening working on my Airwolf model. One of the few remaining difficult bits was the fairing that hold the engines and the engine exhausts. The shape isn't easy, but what made things a bit harder still was that the door that covers the ventral missile launcher swings up when the missile launcher is deployed, and protrudes into what is the engine bay on the real helicopter. I had to work around it very carefully.
This may very well be the last WIP picture of this model that I am posting, as it's obviously getting pretty close to completion.
One of the challenges when building Airwolf was the ventral missile launcher. I wanted to have it properly retractable and covered by a sliding door. Instead of my normal photo-series, I shot a quick video to demonstrate the functionality.
This is the back of my Star Trek Klingon patterned Science Fiction and Fantasy trophy cloak. (It also doubles as a Predator trophy cloak!)
This view shows the back and two side panels fully deployed.
All of the badges are either drawn in the computer, obtained on line or hand drawn and painted by me.
Here's the first part of the list of badges! The rest of the list is scattered throughout the individual pictures in this photoset.
If you've entered this photostream at any other point than the first picture you may wish to go to the first one in the set where a fuller description of the making of this garment can be found.
