Strong storm punishes us and at the same time gives the polluted air a good mechanical and electrical scrubbing. So after the typhoon has swept through our town, let's step outside our house and see the distant horizon with crystal clarity. Now, all we have to do is to breathe the fresh, clean and delicious air.

Akhtar Hossain, 42. CNG taxi driver.

While riding his CNG on my way to work, I noticed some branches with green leaves attached to the door of the taxi. I thought he must have cut those from a tree and attached them here - indeed, the summer heat is unbearable!! As I gave a closer look, I found those are real plants! Planted in small plastic bottles with soil in them!

I asked him why he planted those in the CNG. "These ARE oxygen", he said.

I couldn't ask him any more questions. My 'educated' mind bowed to this extraordinary man, who is nothing but a mere taxi driver to us.

I focused as it was flying up but went down into the water.

On Inauguration Day, a sea of air pollution lay south of Mesa Verde, pierced only by Shiprock and two smokestacks from coal-fired power plants west of Farmington, NM ... sources of the pollution. Jan. 20, 2009.

Shops are closed. People are asked to stay home. Most of the traffic and economic activities have been reduced.. The pandemic has slowed down everything on the planet.

Something amazing has happened. The satellite and global weather data has shown the air pollution improved significantly in the areas struck hard by the pandemic e.g. northern Italy, China and US. The air pollution has been greatly reduced. The reduced economic activities and traffic have contributed to this.

BC province has closed the provincial parks early April. The 24 hours surveillance cameras in Golden Ears Park has shown that wild animals are more active in the park trails after the parks are closed to people.

There are many bad things about the pandemic. But at least there is one good thing the pandemic did to the planet earth. It has cut down the human activities and made some room for nature to breathe.

I saw the quiet scene in the mall with closed shops.

Have a great weekend!

Stay safe and take care!

California currently has devastating wildfires raging havoc in communities. One north of Sacramento near Chico is burning 100,000 acres (400 km2) and destroyed 6000 buildings so far. Hundreds of schools are closed. This fire is 170 miles (270 km) away from us in the Silicon Valley, and the sky is eery gray all over the San Francisco Bay Area from the smoke. The sun is red and barely visible in this shot. I sincerely wish we elect politicians who enact laws to protect the environment, not exploit it at any cost.

I processed a balanced and a deep HDR photo from a RAW exposure, merged them selectively, and carefully adjusted the curves and color balance. I welcome and appreciate constructive feedback.

On the way home from Tucson through the Gila River Indian Community you could see this cloud of dust for quite a distance. It was this piece of farm equipment. It may have been coincidence, but as soon as I got out to take a photo, the tractor stopped. Dust is the number one air pollutant in this part of AZ. Actually I only photographed it because I found it interesting.

Lakeview Generating Station, in Mississauga, was demolished in 2007. Constructed 1958-62 as a coal-fired thermal plant. When completed in 1968 it had cost $274-million, and was world's largest thermal-electric plant (2400-megawatt output power). It was decommissioned April, 2005. Its four 150m stacks were demolished June 12, 2006. The site was then levelled and is not developed as of this writing (March 2021)

Brick blocks are molded manually and piled close to the firing ovens so that they can be dried. Drying takes 5 to 12 days, after which the blocks are put into kilns for firing. Blocks in kilns are covered with brick dust for insulation. In fields, which are not automated and do not have gas connections, the firing starts with wood and later continues with coal. The coal is imported mainly from India because it is cheaper. Substitutes of coal in some cases include wood dust, furnace oil and even rejected tyres.Using firewood in brickfields is banned legally, but actually the practice still continues on a huge scale.

One morning I arose early and hiked to the top of Xinaggongshan Hill to get some sunrise photos of the Li River (Lijiang) and the limestone karst mountains in the Xingping area of Guangxi Province, China. The air pollution and smog were so dense that there was no sunrise at all and the distant peaks were obscured, although I did manage a peek-a-boo look at a speck of colour well after sunrise. All areas I visited in southeastern China had the same problem with poor to dangerous air quality.

Air pollution is contamination of the indoor or outdoor environment by any chemical, physical or biological agent that modifies the natural characteristics of the atmosphere.

Household combustion devices, motor vehicles, industrial facilities and forest fires are common sources of air pollution. Pollutants of major public health concern include particulate matter, carbon monoxide, ozone, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide. Outdoor and indoor air pollution cause respiratory and other diseases and are important sources of morbidity and mortality.

Air quality is closely linked to the earth’s climate and ecosystems globally. Policies to reduce air pollution, therefore, offer a win-win strategy for both climate and health, lowering the burden of disease attributable to air pollution, as well as contributing to the near- and long-term mitigation of climate change.

Land destruction and air pollution seem to accompany the huge amount development I observed along the Yangtze River, as clearly depicted in this photo. The water in the river was quite murky as well. It is one of the world's most polluted waterways.

Needless to say, I didn't take this photo, but it's always been one of my faves from the industrial era of America. I can only imagine what that air smelled like! Old maps of the area called this the "Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal".

The smoky haze has invaded the blue sky in Alberta since early this week . The smoke came from wildfires to the southwest in British Columbia, with the air quality health index on this morning 10, considered high risk.

From this picture, you can tell the smoke particles were large enough as the shorter wavelength blue light was scattered and the longer wavelength red light was let through. The smoke coughed up an eerie orange sun.

Smoggy Melbourne

Melbourne managed to have one of the worlds worst air qualities this morning (between around 12:00 - 1:00 am) with a one hour average of 411.5 ug/m3 of Fine Particulate Matter (PM2.5) due to the smoke from Bushfires in NSW and in Gippsland, VIC being driven towards the city due to the wind directions. Whilst this is nothing compared to what the fire affected communities are experiencing it is fairly unusual for Melbourne, and this level of particulate matter in the air can actually be hazardous in some cases.

This picture is not a particularly good photo as it was taken during the way home (part of a failed timelapse) where by screen was dirty, the shutter speed was wrong and a whole range of other issues but it does show the significant amount of smog in the air. To put it in perspective, the one hour average for around the time I was coming through the city was around 159.6 ug/m3.

Photo specs kind of don't matter, but it was a Nikon D610, Nikkor 28-300mm @ 52mm, f/29, 1/40 seconds, ISO 100 (the settings were weird because I was trying out the Arsenal and let it work out what settings to use).
