Treasured "air letter" from 1978. The Queen and the price are printed on the actual letter already but the stamp "remember to use the post code" was applied afterwards together with the round date stamp.
The Gargano coast photographed from helicopter.
My favorite pastime, as a child, was open up an atlas and imagine to sail distant seas, tracing with a pencil the routes of my voyages ... and collect the postcards arriving at home, pasting diligently in a notebook that I guarded jealously.
The postcards showed me an unknown and magical world ... full of wonderful places ...
I wanted to post this old photo in remembrance of the postcards ... I loved so much.

This airmail beacon had an acetylene powered flashing light that helped pilots keep on course. It was built in the mid-1920's and operated until early 1930's.
The beacon is on the part of Buffalo Valley called "alkali lake" (USGS 7.5' topo "Buffalo Springs NE"). Except for the missing light, it looks like it could still be used.
From Dictionary:
airmail |ˈe(ə)rˌmāl|
noun
a system of transporting mail by aircraft, typically overseas.
• a letter carried by aircraft.
verb [ trans. ]
send (mail) by aircraft : a recent letter that I airmailed to Miss xxxx.
The original title of this was Ukelele Overseas but it has a new title because my son saw this and told me it's a mandolin.
The Boeing Museum of Flight in Seattle, Washington contains many aircraft and artifacts. Shown here is the human powered MacCready Gossamer Albatross II and a Boeing Model 80A-1 aircraft.
The 1917 Curtiss JN-4 "Jenny" biplane has a storied history and was instrumental in ushering in the "Barnstorming" era of aviation history. This reproduction is flown by the Friends of Jenny, a non-profit organization formed to highlight the significance of the biplane. I applied some post-processing magic to my image from the Owensboro, Kentucky, USA air show in August 2021 so the Jenny would appear as it would have from a 1917 photograph.
The Jenny was designed by the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company in 1914-15. During the first military use of airplanes over a foreign country, eight of the early JN-2 aircraft flew into Mexico with General "Black Jack" Pershing on the Punitive Expedition against Pancho Villa in 1916-1917. When the United States declared war on Germany in April 1917, over 6,000 Jenny biplanes were produced as training aircraft for U.S. servicemen. And as if that wasn't enough history for the Jenny, when the Post Office Department began airmail service, the original 38262 JN-4H Jenny (the one reproduced and in the picture) also had the distinction of carrying the first U.S. Air Mail service on May 15, 1918 from Washington DC to New York.
1950s postcards sent to my husband's brother, Geoff (1925-2011), from their cousin, Joyce (1922-1994), who travelled quite a bit way back then. David was the youngest of seven (born between 1924 and 1951). David would have been a young child when these arrived, but now he is the family historian so he appreciates them. On an old model of a Schooner that belonged to Geoff.
Very poignant memories as we have just had David's sister, Evelyn's funeral (1934-2022). Now there is only David and his brother, Dennis, left of that generation. He also has quite a few Carte de Visite which are very intriguing but it's hard to identify people.
Smile on Saturday: Postcards and Greeting Cards
Officially known as "4 LA-SL Enterprise / Sloan", this giant arrow was used by airmail pilots starting in 1925. There are two parts to the arrow, with a turn indicated. It originally also had a lattice tower with a rotating beacon light in the center. The steel angle at the base of the arrow was where one the legs of the tower was fastened. Also had a windsock. I don't think the windsock mount (possibly other parts) are original.
This is located right between I-15 and Las Vegas Boulevard at the far south of the city. Someone has painted it back to it's original color and it points right to the "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign far away. I had better shots of both halves of the arrow, but I like this one with the storm on the left. It was very windy on this day.
Hi-res satellite photos (such as Google maps) show this before it's paint job at 35.953322, -115.179311
I don't know who has worked on the "restoration", but they deserve a lot of credit for the fine job they have done.
That is Gass Peak behind the city. Named after O. D. Gass whose ranch became Las Vegas. Lone Mountain is behind the windsock pole.

Airmail pilots used a light on this tower to stay on course in the 1920's and 30's.

South of Jean NV, about 100 feet east of Las Vegas Blvd. Built in the late 1920's on the Los Angles to Salt Lake City route.
Having watched events in America unfold with the rest of the world, the CrazyGang decided that they would not take sides at any price…..For anyone that knows a Sheltie, will know that is not the Shetland sheepdog way……But that did not stop them from having an American friend flying a C47 plane to the UK to load up with a special cargo of Sheltie healing to fly back Stateside, so you can all get back to business as usual…..And let’s face it….We sure hope that the Sheltie love works for you and all our friends in the States…So with the tail wheel up and the engines at full revs and propeller's spinning the C47 prepares to take to the skies with a farewell to 4 very worried Shelties with a lot on their minds…
Airmail beacon built in the mid-1920's. Airmail pilots would follow the powerful lights on these towers when flying at night on overland routes - this one was on the San Francisco to Salt Lake City route.
The existing beacons are few, people who need a tower have taken most that have a road, sometimes leaving only a lonely concrete arrow or pad. The most remote beacons are relatively intact like this one. It is 2+ miles to the closest road from this location. The "trailhead" is anywhere along the road. There is no trail and without powerful optics (in addition to knowing where to look) the tower can not be seen. Start hiking in the right direction. Like an airmail pilot back in the day, just trust your compass. The road is on one side of the valley and the tower on the other, so the hike will always end with a long uphill stretch. Jersey valley is vast.
Pershing County, Nevada
This abandoned airfield was built as an emergency landing field for airmail pilots. These fields were about 50-60 miles apart. This one has an arrow for direction (beacon tower has been removed from arrow), gas (tank supports ruins seen behind arrow) and fancy curbing on the taxiways and roads. A local rancher has built a corral here since the place was abandoned in the 1930's. My theory on the metal cones is they were for lights - the cones directed the light down and were visible but not too bright.
The satellite view of this airport (visible on flickr map- change to sat view) shows a triangle of runways just north of this location. I don't know if this field was ever used but was available in case of trouble.

End of an Era.
For years, Zimex Aviation’s ATR72s and 42s (with help from Amapola Flyg) have carried the mail across Sweden for PostNord, connecting cities through the night when everyone else was asleep.
On the night of 29th of august the final flights arrived as PostNord ends its domestic airmail operations 1 of september.
A quiet but historic moment. The end of Sweden’s dedicated postal flights, and the closing of a chapter in Scandinavian aviation.

Times are changing so fast that often we can't keep up with things. While at the Pittsburgh International Airport, I was intrigued with "Miss Pittsburgh," the history-making airplane that made the first airmail flight from Pittsburgh, Pa to Cleveland Oh on April 21, 1927. Take the time to enjoy our history and be sure to hand this rich history down to others. It's FUN keeping up with things, and it's also FUN remembering! As my daughter boarded the big 747, I took many pictures of the above plane which continues to be an historical reminder to the thousands who visit Pittsburgh International every day. Let us never forget our roots!
NOTE: Thanks in advance for your visits, comments, and invites, as well as taking a walk down history lane with me! :-)

I captured this seagull in flight while taking a quick walk on the beach this morning. It started drizzling while I was walking, so I didn't take as many pictures as I wanted to. Thank you to SkeletalMess and boccacino for the textures.
Happy Wednesday everyone. I'll catch up on your streams this evening!

I'm stampolina and I love to take photos of stamps. Thanks for visiting this pages on flickr.
I'm neither a typical collector of stamps, nor a stamp dealer. I'm only a stamp photograph. I'm fascinated of the fine close-up structures which are hidden in this small stamp-pictures. Please don't ask of the worth of these stamps - the most ones have a worth of a few cents or still less.
By the way, I wanna say thank you to all flickr users who have sent me stamps! Great! Thank you! Someone sent me 3 or 5 stamps, another one sent me more than 20 stamps in a letter. It's everytime a great surprise for me and I'm everytime happy to get letters with stamps inside from you!
thx, stampolina
For the case you wanna send also stamps - it is possible. (...I'm pretty sure you'll see these stamps on this photostream on flickr :) thx!
