This one is a little more complicated play on reflections. The foghorn shed was locked so my only view of it was to point the camera through the window that is reflecting the ocean view and white picket fence behind me. Then as we look through the shed we can see the sea through the window on the other side. This is a single take (no bracketing) so it shows the dynamic range of the D850.

But inside we catch a glimpse of the workings of the air compressor that powers the massive foghorn.

"The Foghorn was installed in 1929 and decommissioned in 1973. It was restored in early 2000 by a group of volunteers. It is the only operational G-type diaphone in the world. The building also houses a very rare Gardner kerosene engine.

Under ideal conditions the Foghorn can be heard approximately 30 km out to sea. Hearing protection is recommended."

With my three uploads today I've been looking at reflections in the windows of the foghorn shed at the Low Head Lighthouse in northern Tasmania. Once again we see the view behind me of the sea, sky and clouds. And through the glass we also catch a glimpse of the air compressors of this massive foghorn that can be heard 30 kilometres out to sea. But with the reflection it creates an almost surreal image in the René Magritte sense.

It was installed in 1929, and if you look closely you can see some of the fine engineering that went into producing this compressor.

a bit of an old windbag but still good company

I finished installing a pull out drawer for the air compressor, and added door handles to all of the drawers and doors.

All I have left is to add door stopper magnets to the cabinet front and back and this project will be done!

Quite the opposite of what I usually feel on a Monday morning!

This is a small air compressor gauge (about 1 1/4 inch diameter) and its attachments. Quite a "contraption!"

This air compressor was used to power the pneumatic drills in the mine.

From the US Environmental Protection Agency:

The Pennsylvania Mine was initially developed in 1879. It produced gold, silver, lead, copper and zinc and had its biggest production year in 1893 when it shipped 7,000 tons of ore. The mine was developed on six levels, known as A, B, C, D, E and F with F being the lowest level. Adits were constructed at levels C and F. The mine continued regular operations until 1908 and was then worked intermittently until the mid-1940s when it was abandoned.

Since being abandoned, metals-laden effluent has flowed from the level F adit, down a steep channel and directly into nearby Peru Creek, which is a tributary of the Snake River. In addition to this acid mine drainage, significant waste and tailing deposits remain on the surface near both the level C and level F adits. These deposits are often eroded into the creek during large runoff events.

Both Peru Creek and the Snake River are listed on Colorado’s 303(d) list of impaired water bodies. Data collected since the 1980’s by various parties suggest that the mine is the largest single anthropogenic source of heavy metals in the Peru Creek and Snake River watershed.

This rustic old mining headframe stands under a blue sky, connected by cables to a large rusted winding wheel. In the backdrop of this historic mining equipment, appears a quiet street with modern cars and buildings, contrasting the old with the new.

Situated now at Kintore Park, Broken Hill, NSW, Australia. One of several images to come.

All this was moved in 1984 to this location when the original mine of 1930 changed to open cut mining.

The Kintore Reserve is a quiet green space in the centre of the city – a place for visitors to rest. It also marks the beginning of the Broken Hill Silver Trail.

The most striking feature of the Kintore Reserve is the retired timber headframe previously located at Kintore Shaft which was the main shaft of Central Mine from 1903-1940. The shaft was named after the Earl of Kintore who was the first chairman of the Central Mine that in its lifetime produced six million tons of ore.

The shaft is constructed of Oregon wood for fire resistance and is supported on concrete footings and cross-braced with steel rods. The headframe allowed access to the mine and extraction of ore in the upper levels. Steel headframes replaced these wooden headframes after 1930.

Alongside the industrial remains of early mining are two towering and dramatic sculptures by Pro Hart, Broken Hill’s most famous artist. Pro Hart was himself an underground miner, and the sculptures are an homage to the harsh life of generations of miners. The dedication plaque acknowledges the Brushmen of the Bush, the charitable artists’ collective of which Pro Hart was a member.

The head frame alongside the sculptures tells a story of a place where mining and geology meets the arts.

Final look at one of the steam-powered air compressors at Sloss Furnaces.

I overheard parts of two tour guides' presentations whilst shooting in here. The second guide said that the fences around the wheels were a post-construction modification, installed once it became clear how much suction these wheels generate. If I heard him correctly, three workers were killed in the Blower House during its working lifespan. I think he said one was burned to death. But did the spinning wheels kill either of the others? I couldn't hear that part of the talk.

This unlabelled piece of large machinery is in the BIG Store at what is now the Historic Dockyard at Chatham. Information on www.douglas-self.com/MUSEUM/POWER/highsped/highsped.htm#bro tells us that it is a Peter Brotherhood Ltd high-speed steam engine that appears to have been converted into an air compressor. I have to wonder, to what end? And what was the engine originally used for?

Off to the left beyond the partially-visible tractor above is a full naval steam plant (boiler, turbine and generator set), so I assume that the engine above might also be naval but that needs somone out there with the knowledge to confirm it.

At the time of my visit the various pieces of large machinery, equipment, vehicles, boats and parts in the BIG Store were just parked there, rather than being displayed. I note more recent images show that at least some of the vehicles are now being presented rather than just parked. Perhaps one day the heavy equipment will also be cleaned and properly displayed/labelled.

The bellis and morcom self lubrication air compressor was erected in the powerhouse near No 1 shaft at the north mine in 1908. It was relocated to its present site at Kintore Park in 1986 to allow open cut mining of the No 1 shaft area.

Robert Gardner started a one-room company building governors for steam engines in Quincy, Illinois back in 1859. It eventually merged with Denver Rock Drill Manuf Co in 1927.

70. Mechanism

The front grille of a Schramm Pneumatractor, which functioned as both a tractor and a mobile air compressor. Its nickname "Little Windbag" is painted faintly across the top.

The Schramm Pneumatractor, described in an old company brochure as a "self-propelled air compressor". This tractor used a converted engine where half the cylinders were dedicated to compressing air rather than generating power. A tank for storing the compressed air can be seen beneath the back of the hood just in front of the seat. With only half the normal number of cylinders, I doubt that this could have been used for much serious tractor work, although it might have been fine for lighter tasks.

This was another relic from Kemp's Truck Museum, which is now defunct. Based on the brochure i saw, this appears to be a Schramm Model 60 or 105.
