Seen in some glorious sunshine, a triple set of A-310 Airbuses await departure near the threshold of runway 10R at London Heathrow. Swissair's first Airbus HB-IPA was operating flight SR803Q which I believe was an extra 'relief' flight. Cyprus Airways 5B-DAR was on scheduled flight CY327 to Larnaca. Lufthansa's first in their fleet D-AICC was operating LH1605. The three Airbuses had been joined in the queue by 1979-vintage Air India Boeing 747-237B VT-EFU on AI104 - this aircraft flew its entire 25 year life with Air India!
The Airbuses were all four or five years old at the time but they still looked brand-new to me :)
HB-IPA 'Aargau' c/n 224 - A310-222 was delivered new to Swissair in Mar 1983, the first of 11 of the type in the fleet, largely replacing the ageing Douglas DC-8s. It flew with the airline for 12 years before being sold to ILFC and then to Federal Express as N446FE in 1995. It continued to operate as a freighter with FedEx for the next 14 years before finally being withdrawn and stored at Southern California Logistics, Victorville, CA in 2010. It was gradually broken up over the next couple of years.
5B-DAR c/n 309 - A310-203 was delivered new to Cyprus Airways in Mar 1984, and flew with the airline for 20 years before being sold to World Focus Airways as TC-AKV. After a spell with Turkish Airlines, the aircraft was withdrawn from service the following year, and was flown to Mojave Air and Space Port for dismantling in 2005. It became N409AT with Qwest Air Parts Inc. and was gradually broken up.
D-AICC 'Kaiserslautern' c/n 230 - A310-203 was delivered new to Lufthansa in Mar 1983, the first of a fleet of 25 which replaced the ageing Boeing 707s and 727s. It flew with the airline for 12 years before being sold to LLG Leasing and then to Federal Express as N403FE in 1995. It continued to operate as a freighter with FedEx for the next 15 years before finally being withdrawn and stored at Southern California Logistics, Victorville, CA in 2010. Taken with my brand-new Nikon F-501 camera and 75-200mm zoom lens! 1/500th at f16-22 Scanned from the original slide without restoration
New horizons - in 1988 I finally retired my trusty Zenith TTL and 300mm lens combo. I had been using various Zenits E, EM and TTL since 1979, but finally made the decision to upgrade. By this time, I wasn't visiting the airports so often, as the Airbus invasion was in full swing! I also had switched to mainly negative/print film since around 1983 as Kodachrome was so expensive, so I don't have all that many slides from the late 80s.
According to my records, on this day I already had loaded a 36 frame roll of Kodak Ektachrome ASA200 film - totally the wrong film for a sunny day! I took just twelve shots from the perimeter fence near the old sewage farm!
