Here some facts about gas stations:
The world’s first gas station is widely considered to have opened in 1905 in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. It was established by the Automobile Gasoline Company, a subsidiary of the Shell Oil Company. Before this, gasoline was typically sold at general stores, pharmacies, or even from barrels at blacksmith shops.
This early gas station was a dedicated facility designed specifically to dispense gasoline to automobiles, marking a significant shift in infrastructure for the growing number of car owners. It had a simple hand pump and a large visible storage tank, setting the stage for the evolution of modern fueling stations.
However, another key milestone came in 1913, when the Gulf Refining Company opened what many consider the first modern gas station in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This one featured a canopy, uniformed attendants, and paved driveways — elements that would become standard in service stations later on.
So while St. Louis had the earliest form, Gulf’s Pittsburgh station is often credited with pioneering the modern gas station model.
And another fact: Bertha Benz, wife of Karl Benz (inventor of the first practical automobile), made the world’s first long-distance car trip in 1888.
During her journey, she purchased fuel (ligroin, a petroleum solvent) from a pharmacy in Wiesloch, Germany. And that again is not too far, from where I live :-) And even closer to my job....

Je n'ai pas pu éviter les reflets mais voir le chat de Pallas actif, c'est si rare. Et encore faut-il déjà le voir ! Il passe ses journées en haut d'un mur, s'il est en retrait ou derrière la végétation on ne le voit pas.
Ménagerie du Jardin des Plantes
Le Manul ou Chat de Pallas se rencontre un peu partout dans les steppes et montagnes d'Asie centrale. Il se retrouve surtout en Mongolie et au Tibet. Malgré sa ressemblance avec le chat domestique, il ne peut pas être apprivoisé.
Cet animal est très territorial, agressif et solitaire. Sa stratégie de chasse se base sur l'embuscade, il attend sa proie, caché dans une cavité ou dans la végétation. Par sa petite taille, le chat de Pallas est une proie pour de nombreux prédateurs : rapaces, renards... Cette menace l'oblige à se cacher régulièrement et à éviter les milieux ouverts. Crépusculaire, il passe ses journées caché dans des cavités. Il sort quelques heures à la nuit tombée pour chasser : rongeurs, petits mammifères et oiseaux. Discret et farouche, il est encore peu étudié et mal connu.

This is the port -so to speak- of the lighthouse. Ai Giorgis, the little church down there is age old, said to -believe it or not- have been built by the Pope of Rome himself!
I wasn't there and I didn't see it so I can't say if the story is true. Whatever it was, it offers an explanation for the impressive name of the impressive promontory: Papas (with the stress on the 1st syllable) = the Pope, in Greek

J'ai créé une nouvelle mise en scène pour mon petit Manoir Tudor afin de souligner l'occasion. I'm back from an 11 day Hawaiian adventure. It was the last state I needed to get to 50 so I decided last minute to book a trip to the Big Island and Kauai. It was an amazing adventure - lots of hiking.
This is Hanakapi‘ai Falls on Kauai. To this falls and back is a tough and steep 8 mile round trip hike. The first 2 miles is on the Kalalau trail and the other 2 miles goes up the valley through the jungle with a few stream crossings. Once you get to this beautiful 300' falls it's worth it. People were enjoying a chilly swim right underneath it. Hawaii is beautiful!
