Class of 1980 Reunion

-- In June 2015, the class of 1980 celebrated their 35th reunion with alumni from classes of 1979 and 1981. As classmates rolled into town, the official celebration began on Friday night June 26, 2015 with mix & mingle time at Olde Main on Main Street.

Golfers swung into action on Saturday morning at Coldwater Golf Links. On Saturday afternoon, classmates and their families enjoyed a little nostalgia as Bill Ripp, their own vice principal, led

an entertaining and historic tour of Ames High. Several classmates brought spouses and children to experience our high school.

The reunion culminated with a delicious dinner, “Memory Lane” program and LOTS of conversation at Scheman building (Iowa State Center). Vernard “Kerm” Harrington was the emcee for the after- dinner program which included a “Memory Lane” slide show, and entertaining anecdotes by Jim Twetten who shared memories of Ames High as well as stories of his children encountering some of the same teachers. Everyone agreed that the weekend was a success conversing with new and old friends. Although the time passed too quickly, they look forward to gathering again with their Ames High family in five years.

Donald Dobell Obituary

Donald “Don” Carver DoBell, age 62, of Ames, passed away in his apartment on December 22, 2023.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, December 29, 2023 at Saint Cecilia Catholic Church, 2900 Hoover Ave., Ames. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the Mass. A time of fellowship will follow Mass. Burial will be held at the Ames Municipal Cemetery. The Mass will be livestreamed and a link will be available under the Events Section of Don’s obituary on the Adams Funeral Home website.

Don was born to David and Dolores DoBell, February 18, 1962 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He grew up in Ames where he graduated from Ames High School. He went on to the University of Iowa where he got his Bachelors of Arts in Music Education. He played saxophone for the Air Force Strategic Air Command Band.

Don taught band in several schools, including St. Cecilia in Ames. Don also taught private instrumental lessons. From junior high until his death, Don was in a band. He loved to play and direct. Don was the conductor of the Heart of Iowa Senior Band for 21 years. Don was first and last a musician.

He was a Roman Catholic Christian who was active at St. Cecilia Catholic Church and a member of The Knights of Columbus. He had many friends at the Keystone Apartments and enjoyed Bingo, puzzles, cards, and potlucks. His engaging smiles and sense of humor will be missed.

Don is survived by his two brothers, Dwight (Darlene) DoBell of Rochester, Minnesota and Dan (Cindy) DoBell of Corning, New York and several nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his parents David and Dolores DoBell.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Adams Funeral Home and online condolences may be left for Don’s family at www.adamssoderstrum.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Don’s name may be directed to St. Cecilia Catholic Church or the Knights of Columbus.

Lamson was a passenger in a boat driven by Dr Larry Anderson a Spencer dentist. The 40th reunion was amazing!! Almost 100 of our classmates met on Friday July 15 at Elks Lodge downtown Ames Iowa, which was a nice venue, it provided lots of room and great backgrounds for photos and lots and lots of re-connecting and conversation with friends and classmates. Saturday, July 16 we all toured the High School then met again at the Memorial Union for group photos out on the steps and more photos and dinner in the Sun Room and another wonderfully enchanted evening of re-connecting with old friends. It was so much fun to see classmates we had not seen for so long, in some cases not since AHS days 40 years ago. We all have journeyed 40 years to get to this spot in time. 21st annual Ames High School All Class Holiday Gathering get-together held Saturday December 26, 2015 at Olde Main Restaurant, Ames, Iowa. 200+ classmates attended the 2015 Holiday get-together, it was a lot of fun, like a small all school reunion. Went through 160 name tags by 9pm.

OBITUARY

Mark Stephen Gerstein

AUGUST 20, 1961 – FEBRUARY 27, 2021

Mark Stephen Gerstein, 59, gained his angel wings February 27, 2021 due to natural causes at his home. A celebration of his life will be planned at a later date. Mark was born August 20, 1961 in Boone, IA to Bernard and Clarice Gerstein. He graduated from Ames High in the class of 1980. Mark was a lover of music and the environment. Anyone who knew him knew he was passionate about reading and he was likely to share his favorite books with them. He prided himself on connecting people. Mark was a great outdoorsman and hunter. In all his life, he never met a stranger, every person he met was a friend in the making. In the last few years, Mark was extremely passionate about and was actively engaged in Marianne Williamson's 2020 presidential campaign. Mark is survived by his three girls who were his whole world, Kylie (Miguel Piña), Alivia (Justin Boot) and Natalie Gerstein and their mother Michelle Hill (Brian Hill); father, Bernard; brother, William (Rhoda); sister, Beth (Greg) Timm; brother, Garth (Angela); sister-in-law, Barb Anderson; nieces and nephews, Aliza and Neil Gerstein, Alex (Nicole Zelickson) and Sedona Timm. He was preceded in death by his mother, Clarice, and his brother, Greg. Memorial contributions may be directed to Food at First in Ames. Mark volunteered there and would have loved knowing that he continued to give even after he passed.

Classmates from across the globe traveled to Ames to rejoice, rekindle, reconnect and revel with one another. The first night, Friday, the group met at Bandshell Park just off of downtown Ames Iowa Main Street.

Ames High School class of 1978 40-year post reunion summary

The 40th reunion was so fun !! The class of 1978 is quickly becoming one of the most connected classes out of all the Alumni classes at AHS, as approximately 102 1978 classmates met and re-connected on Friday Sep 28 2018 at North Cyde restaurant in North Ames, Iowa.

Saturday, September 29 we all toured the High School then 100+ classmates met again later that day at the American Legion on Main street for a banquet, group photos, a short program and then another wonderfully enchanted evening of re-connecting with old friends. It was so much fun to see classmates we had not seen for so long, in some cases not since AHS days 40 years ago. We all have journeyed 40 years to get back together again. Ever so special to have friends that span most, if not all of your life, especially after 40 plus years. Then we shed a tear and said our goodbyes and we hope to see you again soon, maybe in 5 years.
