Detail.

The Hutheesingh Jain Temple - built outside the Delhi Gate in 1850 by a rich Jain merchant. The Hutheesing temple is the best known of Ahmedabad's many ornate Jain temples.

Jainism is one of the oldest religions that originated in India. Jains believe that every soul is divine and has the potential to achieve God-consciousness. Any soul which has conquered its own inner enemies and achieved the state of supreme being is called jina (Conqueror or Victor). Jainism is the path to achieve this state.

The name ‘Janmarg’, which means ‘people's way’, was given by the Hon. Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri. Narendra Modi. Janmarg is a system for one and all. It is about connecting people and ensuring progress. Janmarg is about creating an identity for public transport in Ahmedabad and a sense of pride in Ahmedabad's citizens for their city. Janmarg is an image that will define the ethos of Ahmedabad as a city that is ready to accept change, a city that has a vision for the future, a city that will transform the image of public transport in India.

Ahmedabad BRTS is a bus rapid transit system developed by Gujarat Infrastructure Development Board (GIDB) for the city of Ahmedabad, recognizing that no single mode would cater to the mobility needs of the city and that buses form the most critical segment of the public transport system in the Ahmedabad. GIDB entrusted the system design task to CEPT University. A part of first corridor connecting Pirana to R.T.O. was opened to public on October 14, 2009 by Chief Minister of Gujarat Narendra Modi.

In addition, after the implementation of Ahmedabad BRTS and MetroLink Express Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad, Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT) would be easily accessible through a multimodal mix of Rapid Transport Systems.

Unlike other Indian BRTS projects, this project is on full-swing and the system designs are quite similar to Curitiba's Rede Integrada de Transporte and Bogota's TransMilenio which are exceptionally better than Delhi BRTS and Pune BRTS. By following this system Chennai BRTS and Bangalore BRTS are also under implementation.

Second half of the first phase of the BRTS was inaugurated on December 25, 2009, birthdate of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, former Prime Minister of India. Phase I was stretched up to Kankaria Lake, to cater eastern part of the city also. It was the first time that BRTS buses crossed river & reached Maningar, the most developed area of the city. It was inaugurated by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited

Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited (AJL), the parent company which would govern BRTS operations in the city, is constituted as a Special Purpose Vehicle by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority and Government of Gujarat. It is presently envisaged that private operators selected through competitive bidding will carry out bus operations.

AJL will soon introduce smart cards for commuters. Regular BRTS passengers will be able to buy these smart cards, which will function similar to the monthly pass system for state transport and AMTS buses. The AJL will, however, offer many schemes for the users of their smart cards. The commuters will be able to buy the smart cards at INR 500 apiece and the fare for each journey will be deducted from this amount. For example, for a journey from the RTO to Nehrunagar costing INR 5, this amount will be deducted from the INR 500 paid for the smart card. Hence, the commuters will not have to carry money for the fare every time they travel on the BRTS buses. At present, paper tickets are available at the special ticket windows at the BRTS stations. There are turnstile machines near the ticket windows, where the commuters can have their tickets punched to allow them entry inside the stations.

Buses

The buses currently operating on the BRTS are Tata Buses, it is a mixed fleet of Air conditioned and non-air conditioned buses. This bus is buit by Chartered Speed locally. This is India's first bus with the specifications. The production cost of the buses is half compared to Volvo and Mercedes Benz and that is the main reason of the success of Ahmedabad BRTS.

Old Ahmedabad (Kalupur).

With both a booming economy and population, much of Ahmedabad is filled with new buildings and businesses. But like most Indian cities, Ahmedabad’s true colors shine through in the old city center, a bustling maze of streets, food carts, and shoppers.
