The RHTT test runs started, unceremoniously last Monday, 30th September, as 6Z11, with a 2 hour delay from York which then missed out the reversal at Sheffield, going instead into the Brightside Sidings at Attercliffe and then setting off back and arriving back in York, 96mins late at 13:30. This working was undertaken using two class 37 locos, 37116 & 37254, but the weather was so bad last Monday, that no-one I am aware of, got a shot of it!. There was then a subsequent 'run-down' at 14:23, now 6Z15, on the same diagram and with the same locos, but yet again the weather was so appalling I have seen no pictures of that either, now just an hour late starting out and avoiding Sheffield once more...
So, taking a punt and thought better have at least one record of this season's leaf clearing duties, now unfortunately back in the 'hands' of last year's Colas class 66s, see-

this year once again with 66847, 'Terry Baker', and an unnamed, class 66, 66848. The 2 sets of 4 mosaic images show the unexpected traction on offer on this day. I was waiting for an unexpected TPE DMU to appear round the corner, its working number, 5T54, having appeared been displayed on the signal just along the line in the background, as it was showing a class 5, ECS, it must be a route learner. At upper left, here running 29mins late, true to form, is this seasons TRail Head Treatment Train, only on its 3rd day of operation, and already looking pretty scruffy. Again the service is operated by Colas for Network Rail and leading on the there-and-back diagram, 3S13, Sheffield via Gainsborough Central and back, is class 66, 66847 'Terry Baker' with 66848 on the back. As may be seen, it is passing through an ever increasing burden of lineside Birch Tree sapling growth and the line was only cleared in the last year; the view here now is very restricted with any lineside features being obscured. As these are busy, well once an hour each way, passenger lines, the blast of hot steam is now turned on all the way along down into Sheffield where the set will make their reversal. Having passed under the long-standing Woodburn footbridge, the set commences to slow down for the signal ahead and I had assumed, as it was late, it would reverse here under the Woodburn Road bridge at signal W0217, as it has done in the past, but no, having got to the green on that signal, the working number changed from 3S13 to 3S14 and the set went on into the Station, as per the time-table. Bit of an odd place to change the working number, possible vestige of taking a reversal at that signal, so it made its way along into Sheffield and sat on the Up Slow line between platforms 5 & 6, presumably so the crew could have their lunch and took the time-tabled 30 minute stop. Whilst this was going on, at lower right, the ECS route learner had appeared around the corner from signal W0213 off the Lower Don Valley line, and commenced snaking its was across the main lines to head onto the down main into Sheffield. This is a T.P.E. class 185, 185110, and is working on the 5T54, Crofton Depot(XRF) via Woodburn junction and into Sheffield, platform 6; so, for a while, it was parked next to the RHTT on the up slow. Having seen that working disappear I walked along the bridge to try and see if there was another vire-point I could use for the expected return of the RHTT on its way soon now to a reversal at Hatfield & Stainforth Station, then back to Masbrough South Junction, for the last reversal of the day, 3S15. Standing with my back to the Lower Don Valley line and another noisy, and completely unexpected train rumbled around the corner and into view. At lower left, and running 78mins late, it had been 30 mins late arriving into Tinsley earlier this morning, was the 6M01, Bardon Stone Quarry return from the Amey stone processing works at the north-west end of Tinsley Yard. In charge is a very clean looking GBRf class 66, 66732, 'The 1st Decade 1999-2000, John Smith M.D.' Tinsley Yard(GBRf) to Bardon Hill(GBRf) with a rake of 20 'JGA Bogie Aggregate Hopper Wagons'. Having arrived at this location at 11:40, well after the normal time, 11:00, this usually runs through, I never thought to check to see if it had passed, so a bit of a bonus for the 1.5hrs of of 'hanging about', lineside...
