This is one of three pits at the Solite Quarry on the Virginia-North Carolina state line. The rocks quarried here are crushed into aggregate. Good fossils occur at this locality - the original finds were on the Virginia side of the border, while the best fossils are on the North Carolina side. The aggregate plant's physical address is in Virginia. The currently active pits are in North Carolina.
The rocks here are tilted sedimentary rocks of the Cow Branch Formation (Upper Triassic). The unit is part of the Newark Supergroup, a thick, geographically-widespread stratigraphic unit in eastern America. It is Late Triassic to Early Jurassic in age and represents sediments and some lava flows that filled up old rift valleys roughly paralleling the modern-day Eastern Seaboard of America. The rift basins formed in the Triassic when the ancient Pangaea supercontinent attempted to break apart, but failed. A successful breakup of Pangaea occurred during the Jurassic. Most of the basin-filling rocks are terrestrial redbeds - hematite-rich siliciclastic sedimentary rocks, such as conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone, and shale, deposited in nonmarine environments.

The Bardon empties left Tinsley on time then sat, as it usually does, at Woodburn Junction for around 10 minutes waiting for its path into the station along platform 6. It is seen here exiting the Sheaf Street tunnels and making for platform 6 with an East Midlands Trains Meridian parked over on the left, platform 8, awaiting its passage south to St. Pancras High Level station in London. In the distance at top right and over on platform 5, beyond the small team of Network Rail personnel working on the lines, is a Transpennine Express class 170, 170307 awaiting its departure on the 1B73, Cleethorpes to Manchester Airport service having come into the station just before the Bardon working. GBRf class 66, 66711, 'Sence' is on the south-bound three and a half hour 6M83, Tinsley Yard(GBRf) to Bardon Hill Quarry working. The Bardon loco has a sky-blue/grass-green livery with 'Bardon Aggregates Industries' & 'Delivering Sustainable Solutions' on the side of the grey overall paintwork with standard yellow end-panels and 'Sence', the locos nameplate with a yellow background; quite an eclectic mix for a 'Shed'.
