The female Blue-throated Starfrontlet looks quite different from the male www.flickr.com/photos/luminouscompositions/51868699155/in... with a cinnamon throat area and pinkish underparts. This bird was at the Observatorio de Colibries, a private sanctuary at higher elevation east of Bogota that is an excellent place to observe a good number of hummingbird species as well as other members of the local avifauna.

Het ‘Minangkabause Huis’ of Naco-gebouwtje werd in 1919 door G.F. La Croix (1877-1923) ontworpen als kantoor en aanlegsteiger voor de voormalige rederij Koppe. Van 1960 tot 2004 was het in gebruik als kantoor van de scheepvaartafdeling van de NACO, de Noordhollandsche AutoCar Onderneming.
Om gewicht te besparen en geen ruimte op de steiger te verspelen, koos de architect voor een houten gebouw op palen. In tegenstelling tot wat de naam doet vermoeden lijkt de vorm van dit gebouw eerder geïnspireerd op de bouwkunst van de Batakkers die rond het Tobameer wonen, dan op die van de Minangkabauwers, een andere Sumatraanse stam. Duidelijk is in ieder geval de invloed van de traditionele Indische architectuur, hoewel ook de invloed van houten huizen op Marken zichtbaar is. Marken was een van de bestemmingen van de rederij, en La Croix was betrokken bij de wederopbouw van het eiland na de overstroming van 1916.
Het gebouwtje werd in 2004 tijdelijk verplaatst naar Zaanstad i.v.m. de bouw van het nieuwe busstation bij CS. Stadsherstel nam het pand in 2016 over van busmaatschappij Connexxion (voortgekomen uit o.a. de Naco). Het is op een werf opgeknapt, en eind 2021 teruggeplaatst aan de kade. Het staat sindsdien bij de Oostertoegang.

This NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image contains a veritable mix of different galaxies, some of which belong to the same larger structure: At the middle of the frame sits the galaxy cluster SDSS J1050+0017. The gigantic mass of this cluster creates the fascinating phenomenon of strong gravitational lensing. The gravity of the cluster bends light coming from behind it in a similar way to how the base of a wine glass bends light. The effects of this lensing can be clearly seen as curved streaks forming a circular shape around the center of the frame. Astronomers can use these distorted galaxies to calculate the mass of the cluster — including the mass of the dark matter within it — and to peer deeper into the universe than otherwise possible. Gravitational lensing not only distorts the views of galaxies, it also enlarges their appearance in the sky and magnifies their light.

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope just solved a conundrum by proving a controversial finding made with the agency’s Hubble Space Telescope more than 20 years ago.
In 2003, Hubble provided evidence of a massive planet around a very old star, almost as old as the universe. Such stars possess only small amounts of heavier elements that are the building blocks of planets. This implied that some planet formation happened when our universe was very young, and those planets had time to form and grow big inside their primordial disks, even bigger than Jupiter. But how? This was puzzling.
To answer this question, researchers used Webb to study stars in a nearby galaxy that, much like the early universe, lacks large amounts of heavy elements. They found that not only do some stars there have planet-forming disks, but that those disks are longer-lived than those seen around young stars in our Milky Way galaxy.
This is a James Webb Space Telescope image of NGC 346, a massive star cluster in the Small Magellanic Cloud, a dwarf galaxy that is one of the Milky Way's nearest neighbors. With its relative lack of elements heavier than hydrogen and helium, the NGC 346 cluster serves as a nearby proxy for studying stellar environments with similar conditions in the early, distant universe. Ten, small, yellow circles overlaid on the image indicate the positions of the ten stars surveyed in this study.

HMC Valiant, callsign MBLL8, is seen above passing Calshot Castle on her way up the Solent in 2009.
She was the fourth and last 42m Customs Cutter built by Damen Shipyards in the Netherlands and launched in 2001-2004. The class has a steel hull with aluminium superstructure. At 238 grt, two Caterpillar diesels give her a maximum speed of 26 kt and a maximum range of 3,240 km at 12 kt. She has a normal complement of 12 and a planned endurance of 14 days. A stern slipway is built into the design to allow launching/recovering of a 7m Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB). The 'gun-like' object on the bow is a 2,000-litre/min firefighting system.
Initially operated by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), bureaucratic reorganisations have seen the class subsequently under the UK Border Agency and then the UK Border Force in 2013.

Hundreds of wildfires have broken out in Siberia, some of which can be seen in this image captured from space on 28 July 2019. Almost three million hectares of land are estimated to have been affected, according to Russia’s Federal Forestry Agency.
This Copernicus Sentinel-3 image shows a number of fires, producing plumes of smoke. The smoke has carried air pollution into the Kemerovo, Tomsk, Novosibirsk, and Altai regions.
An unprecedented amount of wildfires have been raging in various regions of the Arctic, including Greenland and Alaska in the US. They have been caused by record-breaking temperatures and lightning, fuelled by strong winds.
Wildfires release harmful pollutants and toxic gases into the atmosphere. According to the World Meteorological Organization, fires in the Arctic released around 50 megatonnes of carbon dioxide in June alone – equivalent to Sweden’s total annual emissions.
