In abstracto definition: in or from an abstract point of view.

About twenty minutes before the sun comes up is a fabulous, magical time to create an image...fun,fun.

Polaroid Week Day 6/1

A rare late afternoon storm in Sedona, during the month of June, prompted me to go out and find a composition to shoot at sunset. The clouds quickly moved from west to east, so I hurried back to this spot, where I had noticed a few flowering agave plants blooming, and set up to photograph this east-facing scene.

Leaves of Century Plant (Agave americana). A stunning, sculptural plant. As the 6-foot leaves unfurl, savage spines leave a lasting impression on the plant’s epidermis. Matures in roughly 10 years, at which time a yellow-flowered stalk bolts upwards of 26 feet (8 meters); the primary plant dying thereafter.

Agave plant abstract in morning light

During flowering, a tall stem or "mast" ("quiote" in Mexico) grows apically from the center of the rosette and bears a large number of short, tubular flowers. After pollination/fertilization and subsequent fruit development, in monocarpic species, the original rosette dies.

Agave azul (blue agave) is used in the production of tequila.

Agave attenuata, commonly called the foxtail or lion's tail agave or the swan's neck agave, is a species of flowering plant in the family Asparagaceae (the asparaguses, agaves and yuccas). Sometimes called the soft-leaf or soft-leaved agave, the aforementioned animal-related names are a nod to the appearance of the plant's inflorescence, which—after years, generally—rises slightly before gravity brings it back down, giving the bloom a curved, "swan"-like or "foxtail" look. The species' specific manner of flowering is unique in the genus Agave as most other species produce a towering, vertical display, reminiscent of a miniature tree. Wikipedia

Saturday self-challenge: Diptych in colour and black and white

A steep learning curve this week! I've only just started using an editing programme that can do this, so to jump straight into a diptych was a challenge, but I made it!

A great topic to encourage some pushing beyond our normal boundaries.

The beautiful shapes of nature

This is an Agave plant. Great structures and interesting shapes

Polianthes tuberosa, tuberose.

I'm working on a project called "Driven to Abstraction" where I create abstracts from natural scenes. I shot this one yesterday while on a walk through the San Diego Botanic Garden. The colors are all there in the agave scene I simply enhanced them to personal taste in post processing.
