John and his brother Larry would collect many rocks and stones around Magdalena and Kelly as boys. They would then cut if needed and then polish them. This is one of them they found about 55 years ago after they cut and polished it. It's 3.175 cm (1.25 inches long).

Macro Mondays 'stone' theme.

The image shows the details in part of an agate geode.

This part of the geode measures 1.25"

.... It was such a gorgeous and long lasting sunset over Lake Superior that night. Grand Marias, Michigan.

.... Here a mother and her son walk along the beach looking for agates.

(24/365) I bought this piece of Brazilian Agate at a craft fair about 30 years ago & still have the numbered certificate that came with it. It stands just over 3" tall. The Avocet is an original painting by David Fish (you can see his trademark fish symbol at the bottom right) he was based in Rutland, Leicestershire. HWW!

For 117 pictures in 2017 #29 Less than perfect. It used to really annoy me that this piece of agate is chipped slightly at the top right but that is how I bought it & my symmetry OCD has gotten used to it over time.

Sorry for the poor resolution, but the optical microscope lenses have a limited resolution due to the physical properties of light.

One of many spots on Lake Superior called "Agate Beach" - this one is at Black Beach Park in Silver Bay, Minnesota. The Palisade Head is visible in the upper left hand side of the picture.

Jewelry.

A agate made into a nice piece of jewelry.

Not a "true macro" - it is more like a 1:2 shot because the pyramid is about 3 cm tall. I could have closed in more to focus on some detail but it wasn't as good looking as the whole thing.

As usual, depth of field is an issue so I decided to go with a 6 shot stack.

Quite a bit of work to clone out the dust specks.

Thank you for all your faves and comments.

Agate House in the Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona

This 8-room Agate House was constructed of petrified wood that was built and occupied from around 1050 to 1300, Pueblo II and Pueblo III periods

Ancestral Puebloan people used petrified wood for tools such as knives and scrapers. Agate House demonstrates another innovative use as a building material.

The current house was reconstructed in 1930s by Works Progress Administration based on excavated foundation. The walls to be one foot (30.48 Cm) thick and agatized wood was laid in a clay mortar.

This is the only surviving example of petrified wood being used as a building material and is 2 miles (3.2 km) round trip from the Rainbow Forest Museum parking lot.

Macro Mondays 31.07.2023 "Stone"

I have 6 stones from 4 cm to 7 cm. This is the little one. All stones look like eggs.

Polishing agates brings out the hidden natural colors and shapes that developed within the stone as if formed. The primary rock is quartz with the colors derived from other elements. Photographed at a local rock and mineral show and sale.

This artistically designed agate necklace is one of my favorite art fair finds.

Even wind and rain can't deter the avid collectors hunting for agates and Petoskey Stones that can be found among the millions of weathered beach stones washed up onto the Lake Michigan shorelines. In fact windy, rainy days might even be the best days. Rain wetting the dull, weathered stone brings out the color and patterns of fossils in the rock; and, the wind washes more stones ashore.

(Petoskey Stone is limestone rock with a pattern of fossil coral. that is unique to Michigan en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petoskey_stone )

(Agates are are rocks with attractive bands of quartz and chalcedony. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agate )

The natural patterns and colors are intensified when these agates are polished. Seen at a local rock and mineral show and sale.

The storm could not have been painted more beautifully. Agate half. About 3.14 x 1.77 inches (8 x 4.5 cm)

Gorgeous sunset at Agate Beach, Oregon.

Two Harbors - MN

When I arrived at the North Shore from Ely, the fog and mist dominated the shoreline much of the morning. The fog horns were howling along the highway as I moved up the coast to the north!

The farther up the shoreline I got, it stated to dissipate with the climbing sun and breeze.

It is simply amazing to see these cross sections of now rock and immediately recognize that they were once trees. Apparently, cutting the agatized trees is even more difficult and time consuming than cutting marble. Not sure how this was accomplished in 900 AD.
