This former stone breakwater served to protect the reclaimed land from the sea currents, by keeping this far off the coast.
In this way the scouring effect on the reclaimed land was limited to a minimum.
This stone breakwater was part of a whole series, including wooden ones.
With the construction of the famous 32 km long "Afsluitdijk", the huge dike between the provinces of Noord-Holland and Friesland, the complex of breakwaters has completly lost its function because the sea currents between the North Sea, the Wadden Sea and the Zuyder Sea was eliminated.

This picturesque little village was originally situated on an island. Floods were regular and often disastrous. To protect their belongings and themselves from the water, the inhabitants created artificial dwelling hills on which they build their houses. As fishery became the main economic activity, the population grew rapidly. When the Afsluitdijk was finished in 1932, and the Zuiderzee became the fresh water IJsselmeer with no access to the sea, fishery activities came to an end. When the dike between Marken and the mainland was closed in 1957, Marken wasn't even a real island anymore. Nevertheless, the village still has the looks and feel of a fishermen's town and an island. For over a century, it has drawn in visitors who wanted a glance at its traditional costumes and picturesque houses.
Breezanddijk, Ijsselmeer
This week´s business trip took me into the North of The Netherlands into the Province Noord-Holland. Despite many contacts and trips into the country this part of the Dutch North Sea coastline was quite unknown to me. It was a pleasure to experience the area around Den Helder and - by coincidence - I had my camera with me...

The IJsselmeer [lake of the river IJssel] was created by closing off the Zuiderzee by means of building the Afsluitdijk, a 32 kilometres long closure dam between North-Holland and Friesland, which was completed in 1932.

CORNWERD - The Afsluitdijk, length 32 km (19,88 miles) is protecting the Netherlands from the Sea for more than eighty years. However, the dyke no longer meets the current requirements for flood protection.
Rijkswaterstaat is therefore going to reinforce the Afsluitdijk. The body of the dyke will be widened and raised by about 2 metres and the cladding on the outer side will be replaced. Concrete blocks will be placed over the existing basalt blocks on the lower slope. These 'Level blocks X Plus' weight 6,500 kilograms each and have a wave retardant effect. Because of their symmetry and the regular way they are positioned, the blocks have a tranquil appearance that reinforces the austere and autonomous character of the dyke. Every block will be GPS chipped, making them easy to inspect and maintain.
sailing on the IJsselmeer
The IJsselmeer is excellent for sailing. It is the largest lake in the Netherlands, bounded by North Holland, Flevoland and Friesland and bordered on the south by the Houtribdijk and on the north by the Afsluitdijk. It is part of the former "Zuiderzee" along which people lived mainly from seafaring. The historic port cities on the banks of the IJsselmeer are still silent witnesses to this. Around the IJsselmeer are the ports of Urk, Lemmer, Stavoren, Makkum, Medemblik and Enkhuizen.
After the construction of the world famous "Afsluitdijk" the North Sea was definitively separated from the very dangerous "Zuiderzee", creating the "IJsselmeer".
As a result fishing disappeared , and many thousands of peoples became unemployed.
The buidlings of this industry also fell out of use and became in disrepair, such as the former fish auction in Laaxum (Friesland)

CORNWERD / WADDENZEE - In the case of shrimp fisheries, they maximize their catch per unit effort by using commercial fishing gear called a trawl. Trawling involves pulling a weighted, sock shaped net through a water column or on the sea floor in order to exploit the catch of a target species
