He is singing, a diana, or sung prelude, establishing the mood before the Yambú dance (a form of Cuban rumba) starts; a single couple slowly and respectfully dance within a circle created by the conga drummers, singers, waiting dancers, and spectators. Afro-Cuban ritual dances form a huge group of Cuban dances and reflect the four main groups of Africans that were transported to Cuba.

L'ANIMA E' RIMASTA IN AFRICA...

 

Non c'è dubbio, Cuba, è un'insieme multiforme di etnie, succedutesi nei secoli, dall'avvento degli Spagnoli in poi...

Un'ampia porzione di questo popolo, così particolare,

sono gli afrocubani.

Con l'avvento della massiccia produzione di tabacco,

cotone e canna da zucchero, le braccia,

in epoca preindustriale, non bastavano mai...

Ed ecco comparire, la piaga dello schiavismo,

il più bieco e crudele, che si possa conoscere.

 

La storia, la sapete tutti, ed è zeppa di dolore...

Quel dolore che ora,

sembra non affiorare,

sul sorridente volto di questa bella ragazza.

Il suo nome, era tutto un programma...

ESPERANZA...

 

Così la madre la chiamò, in ricordo dei nonni suoi,

che morirono di stenti e percosse,

sui campi assolati dell'isola.

L'augurio, era, appunto, la speranza che questo,

non accadesse mai più....

 

Il volto, così luminoso, si velò di pacata tristezza...

Poi, la voce, come un sussurrar alla luna...

Mi raccontò una storia, così commovente,

che non riuscii a trattenere le lacrime...

 

Nelle notti lontane di Cuba, tra gli schiavi,

un solo pensiero... l'Africa...

E la sua savana sconfinata...

Dove, le anime degli avi,

vagavano libere da ogni costrizione...

Nessuna catena, a cingere le caviglie...

Tra le piantagioni la pietà, non albergava per niente,

i corpi dei morti, straziati e offesi,

venivano seppelliti in fretta e furia...

Non c'era tempo per le lacrime... ne per i ricordi...

Lentamente, quel dolore, divenne un canto che cominciò a volare tra i campi...

Permeando l'aria di dolcissime melodie.

Più che un canto, sembrava un lamento... languido... soave... struggente...

Gli schiavi, lo intonavano nella loro lingua madre,

in ricordo dell'amata terra.

E le giornate... sembravano meno faticose...

 

Uno stralcio da un testo, più o meno, diceva così:

 

" o dolce luna, cullami nelle tue notti argentate, così che la mia anima, possa addormentarsi serena..."

 

Esperanza, prima di andare... concludendo mi confessò:

 

" La mia anima è in Africa... è laggiù che voglio andare...

Prima o poi.

 

Come... non augurarglielo...

Rachel Therrien is a premier Canadian trumpet player, who favours Latin Jazz. The room was bursting in seams with enthusiastic audience, as was the crowded stage. The venue was one of the smaller ones at Fabrica des Artes. I have seen Rachel Therrien several times in Toronto and Montreal, but this was probably the best performance in my memory. She was in her element. She teamed up with some of the best Cuban musicians, like fellow trumpeter Alejandro Delgado, Paris based Cuban saxophonist Irvin Acao, Drums- Michel Medrano (Montreal/Havana), Percussions- Jesus Estrada and Anthony Sotomayor Lage,

Bass Yenly Medina, Keys Juan Antonio Rodriguez and few others.

Charlie González clearly enjoyed his time on the stage with his quartet. After his performance he joined the next group (Mauricio Farfán trio from Chile) and made it much more entertaining. He had obviously many friends in the audience and stayed even for the third group. The sax player is Livan Morejon (Diakara) and percussionist Lazaro Erick. The garden is my favorite music venue in Havana. There is great vibe even when there is no festival happening.

Charlie González claramente disfrutó su tiempo en el escenario con su cuarteto. Luego de su actuación se unió al siguiente grupo (trío de Mauricio Farfán de Chile) y lo hizo mucho más entretenido. Obviamente tenía muchos amigos entre el público y se quedó igualado con el tercer grupo. El saxofonista es Liván Morejón (Diakara) y el percusionista Lázaro Erick. El jardín es mi lugar de música favorito en La Habana. Hay un gran ambiente incluso cuando no hay festival.

  

You would think, drumming comes naturally, but even if you a talented, there is a long road to excellence. Immersed in the Senegalese African traditional music since a young age, Waly started with the djembe type drum. He enrolled at the conservatory in Bagnolet at the age of 7 and study classical percussion, but also drums, when he started listening to hip hop.

He completed his study in classical percussion at the City Conservatory of Paris and continued his career as a classical instrumentalist and other conservatories in contemporary music. At the same time, he studies percussion in Paris in Sabar (traditional Senegalese percussion) and in Gennevilliers - Afro-Cuban music. Throughout his poly-instrumentalist training, he joined numerous ensembles: Àbájade, Boubacar Kafando (Burkinabe fusion), the group of Maur Cyries (pop-rock) as drummer, Le Feste Antonacci and also electronic music. At the same time, he performs in the classical field with Radio France orchestra.

 

The cool venue of 'Fabrica des Artes' (FAC) on the westside of Havana provided a sophisticated atmosphere and audience. Àbájade is a group of musician from Paris and at this concert; they were even stronger with the participation of some Cuban musicians. It was a party from the first note! The 'Fabrica' is definitely worth to visit even when there are no concerts. This was taken on the last day of the jazz festival and the atmosphere was electric. La Fabrica has rotating exhibits of paintings, sculpture and photography.

The prominent young Cuban trumpet player Alejandro Delgado, one of the most relevant musicians on the island's jazz scene was at many concerts I attended in Havana. Sometimes, he was just in a background or came in for one or two tunes. Here was guesting with Rachel Therrien (a premier Canadian trumpet player). The room was bursting in seams with enthusiast audience, as was the crowded stage. The stage was one of the smaller ones at 'Fabrica des Artes'. Therrien teamed up with some of the best Cuban musicians, like Delgado and Paris based Cuban saxophonist Irvin Acao, Drums- Michel Medrano (Montreal/Havana), Percussion 1- Jesus Estrada, Percussion 2- Anthony Sotomayor, Bass - Yenly Medina Escalante, Keys - Juan Antonio Rodriguez and few others.

Based in France, but probably born in Senegal, she sings with verve and is a perfect singing partner for Cyprien Corgier. Mauricio Farfán trio represented Chile in Cuba for the first time. He brought with him drummer Sebastián Aspe and Ezequiel Camus, on electric bass. While all three are excellent musicians, the level of entertainment was elevated, when Charlie Gonzales with his trio joined them on theatre garden stage in the second half of their performance. Mauricio Farfán is a teacher and director of music school Escuela Moderna in Chile.

The bass player for Àbájade, Antonin Pauquet, reminded me strongly of young Eric Clapton. He had coolness about him, which was perfect for the cool venue of Fabrica des Artes on the westside of Havana. Àbájade is a group of musician from Paris and at this concert they were even stronger with the participation of some Cuban musicians. It was a party from the first note! The 'Fabrica' is definitely worth to visit even when there are no concerts. This was taken on the last day of the jazz festival and the atmosphere was electric and the decor was eclectic. Abajade is lead by vocalist Cyprien Corgier.

IL POPOLO CUBANO

  

Come si fa a parlare della musica cubana, senza parlare di come è potuta nascere, evolvere...

Sono state le molteplici etnie, che fondendosi,

hanno creato questo miracolo di tolleranza assoluta.

 

Non sto qui ad elencarli tutti...

Così a memoria... gli africani,

gli Europei, con gli Spagnoli ovviamente, ma anche Francesi, tedeschi e noi Italiani.

Dall'Asia i cinesi, della zona i messicani, Haitiani, Giamaicani, per non parlare degli Americani e tanti altri ancora.

 

Era chiaro che, la musica e la cultura in genere,

ebbero un sussulto incredibile.

 

Ognuno di questi gruppi etnici, ha attraversato i mari,

portandosi dietro la propria inestimabile ricchezza culturale.

Le proprie abitudini,

così pure le origini, fin dalla notte dei tempi.

Tutti sono sbarcati su queste magnifiche spiagge,

seminando e fondendo i propri elementi diversi,

e dando origine al popolo Cubano.

 

A me sembra, un meraviglioso miracolo,

al quale fare riferimento, sopra tutto oggi.

 

Dai ritmi delle canzoni Spagnole, è nato il canto Cubano dei contadini (gujiros).

Dai tamburi primitivi Africani, influenzati dalla musica Europea, sono scaturiti i "sones" afrocubani.

E tutti insieme,

nonostante i condizionamenti inculcati dal regime,

hanno superato, via via,

tutte le difficoltà di coesione e condivisione degli intenti,

divenendo... IL POPOLO CUBANO.

 

Mi sento di dirvi:

" L'amalgama di tutti questi popoli, m'induce ad affermare,

che in questo paradiso terrestre,

viene smentito l'odio razziale."

 

L'amore tra persone così diverse,

è risultato un vincolo superiore,

alle presunte barriere di sangue.

 

Mi sembra, tutto questo,

un grandissimo insegnamento che fa riflettere.

 

Spero che un giorno, possa accadere su tutta la terra.

I am not even sure, if these two dancers were scheduled to perform. Rumberos de Mayabeque had several dancers in their midst, but these two just came in from the audience. It seemed like anybody could have their turn on the stage. Los Rumberos were clearly the music group everyone came for. Their style is Afro-Cuban and so was mostly their audience. Cuban violinist Emy Abreu and vocalist HERA were dancing in the audience as did few more musicians from two groups who performed earlier that evening. "Los Rumberos de Mayabeque" bears the traditions cultures of African origin (Yoruba-Lucumí). The gardens of Teatro Mella is my favorite venue. Intimate, authentic and essentially Cuban.

Ni siquiera estoy seguro de que estos dos bailarines estuvieran programados para actuar. Rumberos de Mayabeque tenía varios bailarines entre ellos, pero estos dos acababan de llegar del público. Parecía que cualquiera podía tener su turno en el escenario. Los Rumberos eran claramente el grupo musical al que todos acudían. Su estilo es afrocubano y también lo era principalmente su audiencia. La violinista cubana Emy Abreu y la vocalista HERA bailaban entre el público, al igual que algunos músicos más de dos grupos que actuaron esa misma noche. Callejon de Hamel, a L'Avana, è uno dei centri della cultura afrocubana più interessanti.

La strada, coloratissima e pittoresca, è una vera galleria d’arte decorata con murales, sculture e dipinti realizzati con materiali di scarto e che trasmettono al visitatore la spiritualità, l’energia e la magia di questo luogo.

La musica e la danza ogni giorno sono protagoniste di questa via e la domenica vengono celebrati i riti della Santeria dove i partecipanti danzano freneticamente ai ritmi della rumba e cantano invocando gli spiriti degli Orichas.

 

The Callejon de Hamel is located between Aramburu and Hospital streets in the Centro Habana district. The Callejon de Hamel is a place tribute to Afro-Cuban culture. It is a creative space and for visitors interested in Afro-Cuban music, dance and art it is unmissable.

CALLEJON DE HAMEL IS A narrow alley in Havana filled with lively colourful murals and sculptures made from bathtubs, hand pumps, and pinwheels. It offers visitors to Cuba’s capital a taste of the city’s local art.

 

Cuban artist Salvador Gonzáles Escalona describes his Afro-Cuban style as a mix of surrealism, cubism, and abstract art. After spending more than two decades producing artworks in Cuba, as well as the U.S., Norway, Italy, and Venezuela, the self-taught artist began adorning the alley outside his apartment with art in 1990.

 

After filling the alley, which stretches for about two blocks, with mosaics, paintings, and sculptures, including a throne that bestows good luck and a bench made of old bathtubs, his works started spilling out onto street and up the sides of the buildings.

 

The area was once rather desolate, but the colourful street now provides an eccentric backdrop for musicians and rumba dancers who entertain the increasing crowds of tourists and locals. Sunday afternoon rumba sessions are popular with tourists. A local children’s art program meets in the alley. The surrounding Cayo Hueso neighborhood once had a dangerous reputation, but Salvador’s art has helped to change perceptions of the area.

El Callejón de Hamel en La Habana (Cuba), una pequeña calle de apenas 200 metros, es una zona donde vivieron algunos de los más importantes renombrados músicos populares que después pasarían a la historia. Allá por los años 40 y 50 las noches bohemias en el Callejón de Hamel regalaron a la música cubana algunas de sus canciones más hermosas…. Melodías tranquilas y letras de amor que dieron origen al movimiento del feeling.

Situado entre las calles Aramburu y Hospital, en el barrio de Cayo Hueso, el Callejón de Hamel es en la actualidad un proyecto cultural comunitario ligado a la cultura afrocubana que inició en los años 90 el pintor, escultor y muralista Salvador González Escalona.

Los coloridos dibujos representan como ninguno el sincretismo religioso y cultural de la isla y reproducen a distintos dioses y orishas, símbolos espirituales y animales, con poemas o leyendas escritas en ellos, sobre la vida, el amor, la familia, la dignidad, etc.

Su objetivo era revitalizar una calle de la barriada de Cayo Hueso, creando un espacio en el que el arte y los vecinos pudieran interactuar, y aunque al principio le tocó remar a contracorriente, el tiempo le dio la razón.

El callejón debe su nombre al ciudadano norteamericano de origen franco-alemán Fernando Belleau Hamel, que a principios del siglo XX puso en marcha en esta zona una fundición, y cuya generosidad con los numerosos trabajadores que tuvo a su cargo todavía se recuerda en el barrio. 01-12-2008.

El “matalaculebra” es una tradición afrocubana llegada a Puerto de la Cruz a finales del siglo XIX. Hoy solo se ve muy de vez en cuando.

El Callejón de Hamel, se encuentra ubicado entre las calles Aramburu y Hospital, en Centro Habana. Es el primer mural en la vía pública dedicado a la cultura afrocubana, que nace el 21 de abril de 1990 en la barriada de Cayo Hueso.

El iniciador de este proyecto fue Salvador González Escalona, pintor, escultor y muralista. Su objetivo es brindar el arte creador al pueblo, revitalizando una calle olvidada por el tiempo y por la ciudad, con una Galería de Arte, donde el propio barrio formaría parte indisoluble de una creación única en su género, en el país y en el mundo, que estuviera siempre al alcance de niños, ancianos, obreros y profesionales.

En dicho lugar, además, el visitante puede encontrar productos que están asociados a trabajos y ritos afrocubanos. Este callejón es también un espacio en el que el arte y la comunidad interactúan; donde se realizan festivales en los que participan niños y vecinos de la zona.

Esta calle debe su nombre a uno de sus primeros pobladores Fernando Belleau Hamel, ciudadano norteamericano de origen franco-alemán que pasó a ocupar un espacio en la historia de Cuba, cuando el barrio puso su nombre al Callejón debido a la generosidad del emigrante con los trabajadores bajo su mando.

Desde el primer día de su fundación se realizaron espectáculos y actuaciones con agrupaciones importantes y figuras destacadas como: Merceditas Valdés, Celeste Mendoza, Yoruba Andabó, Clave y Guaguancó y muchas más. No es hasta el año 1993, que se empiezan a realizar las actividades sistemáticas de todo tipo para todas las edades con el objetivo de enriquecer nuestro acervo cultural y darlo a conocer a todo el que los visita.

El Callejón de Hamel, se encuentra ubicado entre las calles Aramburu y Hospital, en Centro Habana. Es el primer mural en la vía pública dedicado a la cultura afrocubana, que nace el 21 de abril de 1990 en la barriada de Cayo Hueso.

El iniciador de este proyecto fue Salvador González Escalona, pintor, escultor y muralista. Su objetivo es brindar el arte creador al pueblo, revitalizando una calle olvidada por el tiempo y por la ciudad, con una Galería de Arte, donde el propio barrio formaría parte indisoluble de una creación única en su género, en el país y en el mundo, que estuviera siempre al alcance de niños, ancianos, obreros y profesionales.

En dicho lugar, además, el visitante puede encontrar productos que están asociados a trabajos y ritos afrocubanos. Este callejón es también un espacio en el que el arte y la comunidad interactúan; donde se realizan festivales en los que participan niños y vecinos de la zona.

Esta calle debe su nombre a uno de sus primeros pobladores Fernando Belleau Hamel, ciudadano norteamericano de origen franco-alemán que pasó a ocupar un espacio en la historia de Cuba, cuando el barrio puso su nombre al Callejón debido a la generosidad del emigrante con los trabajadores bajo su mando.

Desde el primer día de su fundación se realizaron espectáculos y actuaciones con agrupaciones importantes y figuras destacadas como: Merceditas Valdés, Celeste Mendoza, Yoruba Andabó, Clave y Guaguancó y muchas más. No es hasta el año 1993, que se empiezan a realizar las actividades sistemáticas de todo tipo para todas las edades con el objetivo de enriquecer nuestro acervo cultural y darlo a conocer a todo el que los visita.

Hamel Alley is located on a small sidestreet in the poor Cayo Hueso district of Havana, Cuba. It is a place where Afro Cuban art and Cuban traditions are practiced. Many of the surrounding houses and buildings in the area are covered with large murals and sculptures in vivid colors. Over the years it has become a magnet for foreign tourists. Tiny shops sell small pieces of Cuban art, hand carved wooden statues, paintings and Santeria art and trinkets.

 

The alley has also become a place for Santeria rituals. On Sundays, Santeria priests and participants dance to the rumba rhythms and invoke the spirits of the Orishas, the Santeria gods.

The street was named after a U.S. citizen of French and German origin, Fernando Belleau Hamel who lived in this area. The area is described by many as a living sculpture full of poetic images that you have to enter to experience.

Trova is one of the great roots of the Cuban music tree. In the 19th century a group of itinerant musicians known as trovadores moved around Oriente, especially Santiago de Cuba, earning their living by singing and playing the guitar. According to one writer, to qualify as a trovador in Cuba, a person should a) sing songs of his own composition, or of others of the same kind; b) accompany himself on the guitar; and c) deal poetically with the song. This definition fits best the singers of boleros, and less well the Afrocubans singing funky sones (El Guayabero) or even guaguancós and abakuá (Chicho Ibáñez). It rules out, perhaps unfairly, singers who accompanied themselves on the piano.

 

Probably, this kind of life had been going on for some time, but it comes into focus when we learn about named individuals who left their marks on Cuban popular music.

 

Trova musicians have played an important part in the evolution of Cuban popular music. Collectively, they have been prolific as composers, and have provided a start for many later musicians whose career lay in larger groupings. Socially, they reached every community in the country, and have helped to spread Cuban music throughout the world.
