Badlands National Park consists of nearly 243,000 acres of sharply eroded buttes, pinnacles and spires blended with the largest, protected mixed grass prairie in the United States. Established as Badlands National Monument in 1939, the area was redesignated as a "National Park" in 1978. Over 11,000 years of human history pale to the ages old Paleontological resources. Badlands National Park contains the world's richest Oligocene epoch fossil beds, dating 23 to 35 million years old.

Daily Photo - A Great Day at the Google HQ!

Wow that was a cool experience. Those guys and gals over there are super-nice. You never know... I guess maybe Google seems somewhat intimidating from the outside, but after I met guys like Cliff, Brian, and Chip -- I felt right at home.

I gave an hour-long talk in one of their theaters there. It was super-packed and people were standing all around because seats were gone. We were graced with the presence of one Sara Jane Todd from @Peachpit to help out selling books - and we sold out! Also, my Brazilian friend Fabio, the editor of Abduzeedo was there too, so it was great to see him.

The Authors@Google (video link) program has a neat deal where they subsidize books, so Googlers don't have to pay full price. I saw all kinds of cool stuff and took a lot of pics. I have to get most cleared with Google Corp Comms before I can release... but I nabbed shots of a spaceship, a new pseudo-holodeck, and more mysteries await! We even got to eat lunch there in the Google cafeteria, which had some of the most excellent food I've ever had in such a setting... they even have a small organic farm on the campus... well, I could go on and on... but I was very impressed and happy to meet so many enthusiastic people!

The video should be done in the next 2-3 weeks or so. We've got good-man Brian at Google slaving away on editing the whole thing together!

During the hike through the Andes, I would vacillate between sweating hot and frigid cold. Sometimes, things would be just about perfect and an idyllic waterfall like this one would emerge from the Eden-like trail. It was the perfect place to take a load off in the cool water for a break.

Well, there was enough negative feedback yesterday that I have decided to remove the ads. There were little ads that would appear whenever you "mouse over' the photo. But some people found them annoying, and I have taken them off. The rates seemed to be better than google adwords and they were projected to bring in several hundred per month. But, alas, it's not worth making the site ugly or upsetting the readers.

Daily Photo - Building 43 at Google

Wow I had a great time at Google! The guys and gals there I met were very nice and cool... After my Authors@Google talk, I stayed around for a while to take photos while waiting on the workshop to begin. There are sensitive areas of Google, of course, and I didn't even try to take pictures of any of that stuff... Building 43 is the central building of the whole Googleplex. It houses the offices of Marissa Mayer (who did not show up for my talk *ahem*), Larry Page, and Sergey Brin. I wanted to pop into their offices and make unique photos of their offices for fun, but I did not want to ask on my first visit. Wouldn't that be one of the most interesting things in the world? To see the offices of all these people? They don't have to be awesome and all James-Bondy -- even something mundane would be interesting, if captured in the right way. But I do picture Sergey stroking a white cat...

A major factor affecting your conversions is user flow. It’s the path a user follows through your website interface to complete a task (make a reservation, purchase a product, subscribe to something). It’s also called user journey.

In order to maximize your conversions, you have to get the user flow right – build one that matches user’s needs.

Learn more about designing user flow and optimizing websites at ConversionXL Institute. Enroll today!

The wrong way to go about designing your site

You need to decide what your new website will be like. Two most common ways people approach it:

Scenario A

You keep everything as it is on your current / old site, but just make it look “better”.

Scenario B

You start with the building blocks.

Okay, the logo goes in the top left corner. Lets put the menu to the right. A nice image in the header. Cool.

And so on and so on.

Both of these are the wrong way to get going.

Start with the objectives

Your primary aim is to fulfill the business objectives (either your own or the one set by your client). Business objectives might be getting users to sign up for something, getting people to purchase products or join an email list.

Just as in real life, quickies are very rare. People don’t just come to your site, and right away do what you want them to do. In most cases, they need to go through a set of steps leading up to the action.

Next time you’re thinking about designing a site (note: design is not just how it looks, but how it works), start with figuring out what user flows you are trying to create through the website.

In order to do this you need to know 2 things:

Your business objectives. It’s the action you want visitors to take on the site.

User objectives, the desires or needs that they want to satisfy.

So start with being clear about your own goals and identify each user objective to create design flows that meet all of them.

Source / medium determines the message

Customers don’t arrive on a particular page on your site from nowhere. The first step in a flow is mapping out how they get onto your site.

Once they land on your site, they won’t immediately perform the action you want them to. Specific sequences of actions lead visitors through your website as they try to accomplish their tasks.

Match users needs with your business objectives

Your goal is to map users paths – flows that take users from their entry pages through conversion funnels – toward the final action (signup, purchase etc). The final action needs to provide value both to the user as well as the business – otherwise the conversion won’t happen.

If the user wants to clean their car, and your goal is to get the user to order a car cleaning service, you have a meeting of goals and the conversion can take place. On the other hand, if they want their car cleaned (right away), and you want them to join your car-related newsletter, there isn’t a match.

Designing user flows

In order to come up with the user flows through your site, you need to establish possible entry points, and the flow from there on toward the final goal.

Some typical entry points:

Organic search. A user comes via Google, after searching for a particular keyword. Often lands on a deep link.

Paid advertising. Visitors that come via PPC advertising (AdWords etc), banner ads or other kind of promotions. Arrives on your landing page.

Social media. A user coming from a friend’s post on Facebook or Twitter, or via social news site like Reddit.

Email. A user coming from an email newsletter or a link they saw in an email sent to them.

Press or news item. Visitors who come after a mention in the news or a blog post.

Direct link. A regular visitor, has been on your site many times and knows the URL by heart.

How they end up on your site largely determines their needs, expectations and what they know of your product or even the general category. This means you need to treat different people differently.

Sample user flows

So what do these user flows look like? Here are 3 sample flows.

Link in Google results

↓Direct to your site

↓Click on a PPC ad

Landing page

↓Home page

↓Landing page

Joins email listProduct page

↓Makes a purchase

Adds to cart

Completes a purchase

You get the idea.

Stacked user flows

Sometimes you want them to join the email list on their first visit, but ultimately you want to sell them a product. In those cases, you should map stacked user flows: the first one that is completed by joining the email list, and the second one that starts AFTER the first flow has been completed.

Click on an ad → Landing page → Joins email list

Gets an email → Product page → Adds to cart → Completes purchase

The user who has already been through the first flow, is much more knowledgeable than a first-time visitor, has some kind of a relationship with you and you should treat her accordingly.

The steps in the flow depend on your users and the product

In order to design the best possible user flow, you need to understand the visitor and his motivations. Start by answering these questions:

What needs or desires do your visitors have? Which problem do they want to solve?

Why do they need it?

What qualities (about your product or service) are most important to them?

What are all the questions they have about the product?

What are their doubts or hesitations?

What information do they need to take action?

What’s their emotional hotspot to propel them towards taking action?

In order to answer these questions, you need to talk to your customers (or your clients’, if you’re a service provider). You can’t just pull the answers out of thin air. Yes, you should use buyer personas, but those should be based on actual customers and their needs.

Here’s an interesting case study detailing how customer journey maps were used in Boeing.

Another article you might want to read is about designing a hotel booking experience.

The answers to the questions above determine how things are presented on your website. You have to demote certain things and emphasize others. You cannot be all things to all people, your website cannot be about 10 different actions. You need to build focus into your site.

Present sufficient information

The flow must fill in the gaps of information by providing the user with the information they need at the moment they needed in order to eventually be converted.

The mistake a lot of websites make is asking for the sale (signup etc) too soon. There’s little we people do without the adequate amount of information.

Your goal is to keep them moving down the funnel, towards the desired action. Optimize the content on each screen for conversions.

In each step present a clear, benefit-oriented value proposition.

Explain how your offer is useful and how it all works. Invite to read more detailed information.

Back it up by easy-to-digest proof points (references, testimonials, studies etc).

Minimize friction. Ask for the minimum amount of information, reduce the number of fields, extra clicks and page-loading time. Use trust elements.

Create clear and attractive calls to action that guide them to the next step

Designing users flows does not mean that you forget about all the other conversion stuff, au contraire.

State diagrams

Flows are made out of individual screens where interactions take place. A screen offers some possibilities and the user chooses one. Then something happens, and the screen changes. It’s an ongoing conversation.

In each moment in a flow, their (computer) screen is showing something and the user is reacting to it. A good and understandable way to map steps in the flow is to use state diagrams:

what the user sees

what the user does

what the user sees next

what the user does next

Above the bar is what the user sees. Below the bar is what they do. An arrow connects the user’s action to a new screen with yet another action. These are called state diagrams in computer science.

Using these diagrams help you focus on the most wanted action on every screen the users lands on. It’s also very useful when explaining the flow to your colleagues or clients.

Example

Let’s say it’s a website for a car detailing service.

service description

click “book now”

booking form

submit valid data

booking confirmation message

Do this for every page on your site. Define the key content you want to present to the user and a most wanted action. The next action from a screen doesn’t have to be just one thing, the flow can break into 2 or 3 alternative paths. The important thing is that you plan ahead for each path, and design each screen accordingly.

Doing this requires ruthless focus on your part, but the boost in conversions will make it all worth your while.

User flow that supports Flow

Flow, as a mental state, was first proposed by psychology professor Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. It’s a state of being that makes an experience genuinely satisfying. Everybody has experienced it. Most people refer to it as being “in the zone” or “in the groove”.

During flow, people typically experience deep enjoyment, creativity, and a total involvement with the task at hand. There’s a book about it.

Ideally your user flow helps to nurture the flow experience in your users. Three ingredients for the “flow” experience are challenge of the right level, immediate feedback and a skill that can be mastered.

In order to design your site for flow, according to Jim Ramsey you must:

Have clear goals for users that help them understand where they’re going and each step they’ll take to get there.

Provide immediate feedback – whether they click on a button, fill a form or navigate from one page to another – tell them how they’re doing, and what’s going on. The messages and copy have a critical role here.

Maximize efficiency Once a user becomes familiar with your site, they’ll want to start using it more efficiently. When they’re experiencing flow, users want to work more quickly and want the site to feel more responsive. Heavily use the key features of your site and see if there are any annoying, repetitive tasks. Pay close attention to the feedback you get in your user tests. Think hard about how to turn the experience frictionless.

Allow for discovery. Once a user has begun to work with maximum efficiency, there’s a chance that they’ll feel less engaged and grow bored with their experience on the site. In order to avoid this, you should make content and features available for discovery.

When the smooth path is interrupted, or something doesn’t seem to fit, users notice and the flow is broken, which means that the experience is also momentarily broken. These small episodes of friction are cumulative. Unfortunately, the breaks in flow weigh more heavily on the experience than the positive, frictionless moments. Experimenting and testing are key to getting it right.

Clutter, animation, and surprises may interrupt and be disruptive. Online, people don’t like surprises (especially the kind where they go “now what?”, “how do I…” or “what’s that?”). Take out or improve that might cause friction. Less is more: remove visual and navigational noise that might seem like clutter to users.

I’m an Amazon user and have bought a million things from it. I’m very familiar with their interface and while on it, it’s a flow-like experience for me. Today I was browsing Home Depot website looking for certain things, and it was a pretty bad experience. No flow over there.

A reboot of the coach in the former InterCity livery tackling the last stretch of the 50kph section of SH1 through the township on a IC service to Wellington. 1071 is a 2007 Scania K94LB with Kiwi Bus Builders C54D coachwork.

INTERCITY HISTORY:

InterCity is proudly New Zealand owned, tracing its heritage back to Cobb & Co in the 1860s, when entrepreneur Charles Cole introduced stage coaches to help thousands of ‘diggers’ arriving in Dunedin get to the Central Otago goldfields.

Over the years the company has taken on a number of forms, primarily existing as a subsidiary of New Zealand Railways until its long-distance bus fleet and the InterCity name were bought in 1991 by InterCity Management Limited, a group of seven of the country's largest private coach companies.

InterCity also owns the Newmans Coach Lines brand, founded in 1879 by brothers Tom and Harry who offered a horse-drawn coach mail delivery service in the Nelson region. The business expanded to include passenger services, first throughout the South Island and later into the North Island.

Newmans coach services still visit popular tourist destinations including Napier, Queenstown, Wanaka and the West Coast glaciers.

'INTER CITY' NOT DESCRIPTIVE IN NEW ZEALAND

By Kate Duckworth

Intercity and Nakedbus both provide long distance bus services in New Zealand. Intercity had 95% of the market until Nakedbus started up business in 2006. The competition has been good for consumers, with the cost of bus travel generally being much cheaper than it previously was before 2006, including $1 fares.

Nakedbus had a habit of annoying Intercity by using the word “intercity” in its advertisements and on its website, as its metatags and keywords for Google searching and advertising.

The two exchanged letters over several years. In October 2012 Intercity discovered that searches for “inter city” on Google were producing Nakedbus advertisements containing the words “inter city”, for example “inter city buses from $1 – We’ll beat any inter city fare”.

Intercity issued proceedings against Nakedbus. The proceedings were heard in November 2013, and the High Court of New Zealand issued its decision on 12 February 2014: Intercity Group (NZ) Limited v Nakedbus NZ Limited [2014] NZHC 124.

Intercity claimed trade mark infringement, passing off and breach of the Fair Trading Act 1986. The trade mark claim was in two parts. Firstly, against Nakedbus’s use of the keywords “inter city” via Google’s AdWords. Secondly, against the Nakedbus advertisements that appeared in the Google results page.

Surprisingly, there have been no proceedings in New Zealand considering the use of keywords.

The evidence demonstrated that Nakedbus’s use of the keywords “inter city” were resulting in significant click-throughs and sales for Nakedbus.

Nakedbus argued that there was no use in the course of trade of Intercity’s registered trade marks because the selection of keywords is invisible to everyone, including consumers, except Nakedbus and Google.

Justice Asher agreed that this was not use as a trade mark. The use of the keywords was by Nakedbus when it purchased them before the placement of its advertisement, and then by Google when, through its search engine, it made the Nakedbus advertisement appear when “intercity” was typed in the search field. If it could not be seen by a consumer, it could not be “taken as being used as a trade mark”.

The judge distinguished European decisions such as Interflora Inc v Marks and Spencer plc [2013] EWHC 1291 (Ch) on the basis that the New Zealand Trade Marks Act 2002 specifically requires the allegedly infringing use to be “taken as being used as a trade mark”. The use by Nakedbus of “inter city” as keywords was found not to infringe any of Intercity’s registered trade marks.

In terms of Nakedbus’s use of “inter city” in Google advertisements and on its website, Nakedbus argued that it was using the words descriptively, as in to travel between cities. The judge accepted that the words “inter city” have a descriptive meaning, but also that it is the name of a well known bus company in New Zealand.

Intercity produced a survey going to the question of whether New Zealand consumers use the terms “inter city” / “intercity” descriptively or use it to search for the Intercity bus company. The judge found that consumers travelling between cities were unlikely to use the terms “inter city” / “intercity” descriptively, but instead were more likely to use the word “bus” and the names of the cities, and when the terms “inter city” / “intercity” were used, they were used to find the Intercity website.

The judge concluded that Nakedbus had deliberately set out to use “inter city” as a trade mark and “rejected entirely” Nakedbus’s evidence that it only wanted to use the term to describe to consumers what it does.

The judge accepted that a consumer might think that the Nakedbus advertisements were Intercity advertisements. Intercity succeeded on its claim of trade mark infringement in respect of the advertisements. The judge rejected Nakedbus’s defence of “honest use”

Intercity also brought claims under passing off and under the Fair Trading Act for misleading and deceptive conduct. In respect of the advertisements, the judge found that Nakedbus was passing off its services as those of Intercity, and was also misleading and deceiving consumers under the Fair Trading Act.

The judge awarded declaratory and injunctive relief to Intercity. The parties had earlier agreed to a split trial in respect of account of profits, and a further hearing will take place this year some time, subject to an appeal of course.

BACKSTORY: Got up around 8:25AM, made it out driving by 9:00AM and went out until 1:11PM for a total of 4 hours, 11 minutes. Spent $30.50 plus ~$9.79 gas for 43.3 miles of driving (16.5 mpg @ $3.73/G), for a total cost of $40.29. We drove to 43 yard sales, stopping at 26 (60%) of them. We made 18 purchases (23 items) for a total estimated value of $187.35, leading to a profit/savings of $147.06. So in essence, we multiplied our $40.29 investment by 4.65X.

(Also, if you think about it, the profit counts for even more when you consider that we have to earn $~167 on the job, pre-tax, in order to take home the $187 in cash that we saved. How long does $187 of disposable income take to earn, vs the 4.183 hrs we spent here?)

Anyway, this works out to a *post-tax* "wage" of $35.15/hr as a couple or $17.58/hr per person. Kinda shabby compared to usual numbers.

Can you believe these people?!?!! They had a Rock-and-Roll themed wedding, and they said a friend had this MADE for them. Later, it doesn't go with the decore of the house. So they sell it to us at a yard sale for 3. Jerks! But man, am I happy to profit from their jerkiness.

THE TAKE:

* $6.00: sweater and shirt, Ann Taylor, black (EV:$4.99)

* $6.00: sweater and shirt, Talbots, purple (EV:$29.99)

* $2.50: skeleton slamming guitar down, 6.25x4.25x4.5"h (EV:$59.00)

* $2.50: head, ceramic, black, 11x8" (EV:$19.50)

* $2.00: shirt, Chico's, lime green (EV:$11.20)

* $2.00: shirt, Chico's, black (EV:$11.20)

* $2.00: shirt, Chico's, yellow (EV:$11.20)

* $2.00: shirt, Jones New York Sport, black (EV:$11.20)

* $2.00: fire extinguisher (EV:$0.00 because it was not full, oops)

* $2.00: camping chair, brown with white stripe, one really rough connection on the arm (the fabric is ripped), so it's not going to last long (EV:$9.49)
