The fortune reads "SIMPLICITY IN YOUR LIFE WILL ENSURE YOUR HAPPINESS". How often do we choose not to see signs of help? How often do we choose not to listen to good advice? After lunch I was thinking of what my photo for today would be and this fortune cookie and it's advice answered. :) By the way, it was a delicious lunch!

I need a lot of advice for this one.

First off, and most importantly... How should I finish this building? I've used up all the pieces I need for building outside corners, so I can build more straight wall and raise the inside corner if need be, but I can't raise the outside corners. I also can't make any more windows, at least not of the same design. Should I add a second story made of a different material? Should I make the roof start right after the first story? And if so, what should the roof look like (layout as well as color and texture)? I've thought about adding a black-and-white or possibly even black-and-gray tudor section for a second story, but I seriously doubt that would look good.

Secondly, and less importantly, what do you think the landscape should look like? I was planning to make this a city scene, possibly one that fills the whole picture with just Lego. It's located in Larpang, so there will be some snow around. But other than that, I have no clue what I should do.

And, third and by far least important, what do you think of the door? Is the door-knocker a good addition?

If you think I should change the layout of the whole house, say so now while I'm not that far into the project yet. Unfortunately, there can't be anything closer than 5 studs to the outside corners due to the technique I used, so don't tell me to move the door to the middle of the wall. But all other criticisms are welcome, encouraged and dearly needed.

need help on a project, over on my blog.

People often ask my advice on photography gear and techniques when they learn I am a long time Nikon enthusiast dating back to 1969! When my best friend Steve wanted to make the jump from cell phone camera to DSLR he asked me for input on gear. Steve took my advice and is now a happy photographer exploring the world of advanced digital photography.

I thought I might create a series of images and articles on getting started in DSLR photography and share it here.

So.....when people ask me "what kind of DSLR camera should I buy?" this is what I tell them:

For general photography I recommend a used Nikon D3300 and 18-55mm AF-P kit lens.

Why used?

Just like buying a car, camera gear depreciates as soon as you take it out of the box. Buying used means that if you don't like DSLR photography you can resell it for basically what you paid for it. Don't make the mistake of one Flickr friend who bought a brand new full frame Nikon and zoom ($3000+) and then found it too big, too heavy and too complicated to be much fun.

Why Nikon?

Sorry Canon aficionados. You can argue the relative merits of both systems but I only know Nikon cameras and gear and can only give advice on them.

Why a D3300?

The D3300 is two versions behind the current release but still features a 24 MP sensor, near state of the art EXPEED 4 processor, decent AF speed and a "fast" 5 frames per second shooting speed. Most important to me is that the D3300 is the first of the series to accept Nikon's new AF-P lenses (and trust me - you want these lenses - more about them in a later installment)

Why an 18-55 AF-P kit lens?

This lens is sharper than expected, focuses lightening fast and is dirt cheap on the used market. Unless you need long telephotos for sports or extreme wide angles this lens will serve you well to get started.

You can buy this entire kit for under $275 from MPB or KEH.

Let me know your thoughts on this......

Words to live by? I can't decide whether to fix my aging car that is falling to pieces, at great cost, then renew the insurance at even greater cost, or scrap it altogether. I love the old beast but hardly every drive it anymore. I need wine.

Solid Advice. San Jose, CA 2021

On a vacation in Newfoundland, we took a drive up to Bay De Verde , where someone had told us the harbor water was green and there were icebergs. Well sure enough, they were right and we spent a couple of hours photographing the area. It's a rugged and isolated place - made all the more so by the lack of trees. This was a difficult shot against the sun with lots of glare and haze. A polarizer helped but I'm still so so with the results. Any advice on shooting under these conditions?
