It was built in 1910 after a storm damaged 29 boats in that area. It’s decommissioned now and is one of the most photographed places in Minnesota.

Thank you for all the comments and faves, my friends.
In Gooseberry Falls State Park. There are four waterfalls in the park but we decided not to hike to the fourth. After seeing these, that made for hiking to 10 waterfalls for the week and we thought that was a good amount to end our trip on.

At about 60,000 acres, Porcupine Mountains Wilderness is the largest state park in Michigan. Of those acres, 35,000 of them are old growth forest, which is one of the largest tracts in North America. At 2 billion years old, they’re one of the oldest mountain chains in the world.
We love this park so much and are thrilled that there are almost 100 miles of hiking trails in it. It’s a place we could (and hopefully will) visit many times. We consider ourselves extremely lucky to live less than a 5 hour drive from this magical place.
High Falls in Grand Portage State Park. The waterfall was pretty amazing, but it was so misty that we had trouble seeing it. I’m really surprised at how well the photos turned out, considering how wet the lens was!
There were several large trees that were on the beach of Lake Superior. It’s amazing what can wash up on the shore! This is where the Presque Isle River comes out, so it most likely came from the river.

In Gooseberry Falls State Park. Upper, Middle, and Lower Falls are all visible a short walk from the parking area and there is a one mile loop around all three of them.
We can see why this park gets so many visitors with the waterfalls & lake so easily accessible.
Along the shoreline in Gooseberry Falls State Park. We took a short walk & rest there before leaving. I really liked how orange these pillars had become.
We were going to spend the night here but decided to head back to Wisconsin instead (and spent the night at Lake Wissota, then headed home). This is the most visited state park in the state and was packed full of people. With the 90 degree heat, we just weren’t feeling it (neither of us are fans of crowds or hot days). We’ve learned not to be rigid with our plans and that’s served us well.
We’ll come back some day during the off season to check it out because it looks like an interesting park.
Along the Gooseberry River in Gooseberry Falls State Park. This is the most visited state park in Minnesota and we were lucky to be there when it was quiet.
The fog was starting to lift when we drove along the Mississippi in the morning. It made for some very pretty sights!
We couldn’t see if from our campsite, but it was behind where we were staying and we sure could hear it!
In Tettegouche State Park.
At 100 feet, it’s the highest waterfall that’s entirely in the state of Minnesota.

A beauty we saw near the Pemene unit of the Menominee River Recreation Area. Love the colorful siding & roofing.
In Grand Portage State Park, High Falls is the highest waterfall in Minnesota and it separates Canada from the US. It was misting so much that we were soaked before we even saw the falls!

So....I don't think Charlie likes riding bikes with me. Poor thing was howling the whole way down...And well, he might look a tad scared....
Maybe next time will do something a little more stationary!
All the love,

Over the Presque Isle River in Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. The North Country Trail goes through the park and this bridge is part of it. It had terrific views of the river and was pretty bouncy!
Even though the colors were past peak, it was still quite the colorful view!
We had the entire viewing area to ourselves that morning, which we considered very lucky. It’s one of the most photographed spots in Michigan (for good reason!) and at times there are long waits to even park in the parking lot.
The state park was a lot quieter than the last time we were there. We took a short walk by the lake at night and enjoyed the views.
It was almost 80 degrees and a bit hazy. The water was so calm and clear, which doesn’t happen very often on the Great Lakes! We really loved this part of the lake, with the ruggedness of the rocky shore and islands.
We watched the Temperance River flow out into Lake Superior for a while. The lake was so calm compared to the raging river. Quite the drastic change!
