Brian Piccolo Park, Fort Lauderdale, FL

Distinctive stocky waterbird. Adult is dark gray overall with a white bill and forehead shield. Immature has a pale breast and a duller bill that becomes brighter white with age. When walking on shore, note big feet with lobed toes. Inhabits both freshwater and brackish marshes, lakeshores, and riverways; occasionally on saltwater. Breeding pairs aggressively territorial but nonbreeding flocks can number in hundreds. Unmistakable throughout much of range, but compare with very similar Red-knobbed Coot in areas of overlap. Calls are diverse, and include various high-pitched squeaks, squawks, and shorter, more clipped notes. (eBird)

I was not expecting to find out that the Eurasian Coot is a year-round resident of Australia. In fact, it has a huge range across Europe, Asia and Australasia. We saw them several times, but this was the only time one was close enough photograph.

I love this image for the backstory. This one landed on this wee branch as the wind blew and took what seemed like minutes to steady himself. I guess I'm a bit silly for finding so much joy in that LOL

Small brownish wren, rather plain overall, with dark barring on the wings and tail. Lacks white eyebrow. Occurs in a variety of open or semiopen habitats from sea level to treeline and even higher, including parks, rural farmland, and woodland edge with thick tangles. Often perches conspicuously when singing, but otherwise fairly secretive. Listen for bubbly song of chatters and trills, and harsh scolding calls. (eBird)

Split in 2024 from the House Wren complex. This familiar little bird serenaded us at our lodge while I was taken a much-needed break from birding.

One of my favorite birds, the Hermit Thrush, is migrating through The Poconos currently.

This one was photographed in the yard yesterday morning, and was just giving its "chuck" call.

In the coming months their ethereal songs will be resonating throughout the forests around my woodland home.

Adult bald eagle in hoar frost, glad he stayed so still for me!

I got this shot of an adult Blue Tit. I like it as I got the bird staying still and perched nicely on the branch.

A distinctive, large white wading bird with a spatula for a bill. Adult has short crest, yellowish breast patch. First year has paler bill, with fine black wingtips visible in flight. Sleeping birds have horizontal posture and bulging neck, vs. more vertical stance of egrets. Found in wetlands with shallow water (including tidal flats), where feeds by sweeping its bill side-to-side for crustaceans and small fish. May be confused with egrets when sleeping, but note stockier, more thickset overall appearance.

My favorite watering hole-you can see why I like it. Many different varieties visited.

This late juvenile bald eagle shows its emerging white head in this photo from the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge, August 31, 2021.

Here an adult brought food to one of the youngsters. Note that the adult is hovering, and not holding on to the branch. (zoom for details)

A wedge-billed Galápagos finch found only on Genovesa Island. Formerly considered a subspecies of Sharp-beaked Ground-Finch, and likewise has a sharp, thin bill with nearly straight edges. Bill is black on breeding male and dull orange on female and nonbreeding male. The only other slender-billed finch on Genovesa is the very different Gray Warbler-Finch, which has a thinner bill, tan (not sooty-black) adult male plumage, and paler and less heavily streaked female plumage. Common and easy to see in arid scrub near the coast. (eBird)

Why in my pictures more male then female -because male spend more time on guard of the burrow

There's no doubt that a fully mature Gannet, with its stunning yellow head & white plumage, is a beautiful & elegant bird. During a recent visit to RSPB Bempton cliffs, I was also taken with how visually striking these black & white sub-adults are.
