The Canon EOS Photo5 competition is over for 2009. There were 5 briefs and this is one of my test shots. I spent countless hours designing shots, thinking up ideas and taking advice, so I thought it was a shame not to put these up on the internet for others to view. This is one of the ideas I did not use.

This is an example of my close up ideas.

For more information on the event, take a look at www1.canon.com.au/worldofeos/photo5/.

There is also a blog (here is a link to the voting thread) community.canon.com.au/blogs/eos/archive/2009/11/09/canon...

The shots were all taken with a Canon 30D.

I have used the Canon logo on the watermark so I hope Canon don't mind and see this as advertising for next years event in 2010 :)

The 2009 5 briefs were:

Splat (Capturing Action)

"This is a messy brief. The task is to capture liquid in motion. The supplied powdered paint is child safe and you can consider it a starter splat. If you run out feel free to adlib with other liquids like milk, mud or paint but NOT water. USE ONLY OPAQUE LIQUIDS!, Your image needs to capture liquid in action and not the aftermath. If it’s still dripping, flying through the air or splashing, it qualifies."

Close up (100s and 1000s)

"This small candy brief is all about getting your lens close to the object. You must feature these tiny hundreds & thousands but you don’t need to use them all, and if you need more you are free to source your own."

Bokeh (Experimental)

"Photography was born from those who loved to experiment. This is a lesser known experiment that has been around since photography first began.You must choose and attach only one of the supplied Bokeh hoods to the front of your lens when you create your image. This brief will require a little more prep work but the effect is well worth the patience."

Portraiture (Glasses)

"This is a portraiture brief where you must feature the supplied black spectacles. Other than that its open to your interpretation. Consider your lighting choices and your choice of subject. The winning image will present the viewer with just as many questions as answers. A portrait is all about capturing a personality and you don't necessarily need to see the whole person (or all of the glasses) to achieve that."

Practically Black (Low light)

"Practically black is an OPEN BRIEF which means that even those who have missed out on this years EOS Photo5 box can still enter. This is the first year a brief like this has existed. The ‘Practically Black’ brief is about shooting in dark situations while still maintaining details in the image. We expect to receive very moody imagery for this brief."

2009

An iconic sequence from one of the most ground-breaking natural history series produced by the BBC.

From Wikipedia:

"Attenborough originally intended merely to get close enough to narrate a piece about the apes' use of the opposable thumb, but as he advanced on all fours toward the area where they were feeding, he suddenly found himself face to face with an adult female. Discarding his scripted speech, he turned to camera and delivered a whispered ad lib:

"There is more meaning and mutual understanding in exchanging a glance with a gorilla than with any other animal I know. Their sight, their hearing, their sense of smell are so similar to ours that they see the world in much the same way as we do. We live in the same sort of social groups with largely permanent family relationships. They walk around on the ground as we do, though they are immensely more powerful than we are. So if there were ever a possibility of escaping the human condition and living imaginatively in another creature's world, it must be with the gorilla. The male is an enormously powerful creature but he only uses his strength when he is protecting his family and it is very rare that there is violence within the group. So it seems really very unfair that man should have chosen the gorilla to symbolise everything that is aggressive and violent, when that is the one thing that the gorilla is not — and that we are." "

You can see part of the sequence in this video, around the 2:28 mark.

Over 30 years later 'Life On Earth' still amazes, both for the spectacular filming and for David Attenborough's sheer enthusiasm for the subject. Some of the palaeontological information has moved on since it was made, but otherwise it has stood the test of time very well.

The scene was recreated in Lego, using a 'natural' backdrop for FGR's 'Toys In The Frame' day.

"So a priest and rabbi walk into this bar….

~~~~~~~~~~~
I always have known my father was a great man-
Loving, kind, funny, smart, brave, generous, accepting, talented…
I mean, look around me. Surrounded by his legacy of love, light and song.
But, In seeing and being and examining my Dad’s essence this week,
The man without form,
I feel a gently loving spirit; a spirit that transcended the trevails;
the tragedies; the challenges
And through it all,
Managed to provide us all with unconditional love, encouragement
Acceptance and wisdom.
IF spirituality is the courage to be fearless in the face of lost hope And
The faith to know there will always be hope?
That was my dad. A strong shining light who forever lit the path for us Who forever will be in our hearts.
In his honor , I would like to share 3 short poems:
One he recited often, then
One of his favorites,
And one he wrote to his soulmate."
This is chicken pie with a semi-tossed salad!
Our daughter-in-law cooked us a meal and the veg was just chopped iceberg lettuce with a sauce (Jules says it was vinaigrette) so I thought I'd try it with chicken pie.
My version (I adlib'ed!) has boiled potatoes (cut into small chunks with skins left on) and carrots and peas mixed in with the iceberg lettuce and then I added parsley sauce. Surprisingly, it tasted quite yummy.
I have two maxims - chips with everything, and gravy with everything. I'm not a fan of dry food although I'll (semi) happily eat it that way if someone else has cooked it. So the parsley sauce was a good alternative as it happens. Tomato ketchup is not allowed near my food, if that is what you were thinking would work - LoL.
