The Atlantic Manor Hotel stood for many a year at Garrettstown in Co. Cork and is even still listed on a travel website but it is gone now. Ryan visited there a while back and took some great interior shots of the decaying ruins before they disappeared.
A JCB operator was clearing up some of the rubble when we happened to drive past last year and as luck would have it, I only had my wide angle lens so I was limited in what I could shoot unfortunately. It does force you to learn a new discipline and work with what you have though.
We drove past there recently and all that remains is barren wasteland. People still have their memories.
Jacinta and Adam are possibly coming home today. I'm very happy (and tired!)

The Music of Sound: Inspired by Alan Lamb's recordings of telegraph wires, and Matt de Gennaro & Alistair Galbraith's long wire music, I soldered 3 dollarstore slinkies together and stretched them out on my roof, attached a couple of contact mics and ran the wires through my skylight to a mixer console in my living room. Too much noise (hum and hiss from the contact mics) ruined most of the recordings.
Here's an mp3 sample of what i recorded using this setup. There was too much noise in general, but it worked OK when it was raining. It sounds like a Star Wars laser battle: RoofSlinkyRain mp3.
Participated in a class called "ad lib" - so ignoring the quilting rules, but following good quilting techniques to create your own outcome.
I decided to create mine and use it as a shower curtain.
Lots of practice and opportunity to try some new things and also to ignore standard directions and just create.
Looks good in the bathroom too!

The Canon EOS Photo5 competition is over for 2009. There were 5 briefs and this is one of my test shots. I spent countless hours designing shots, thinking up ideas and taking advice, so I thought it was a shame not to put these up on the internet for others to view. This is one of the ideas I did not use.
This is an example of my close up ideas.

The 2009 5 briefs were:
Splat (Capturing Action)
"This is a messy brief. The task is to capture liquid in motion. The supplied powdered paint is child safe and you can consider it a starter splat. If you run out feel free to adlib with other liquids like milk, mud or paint but NOT water. USE ONLY OPAQUE LIQUIDS!, Your image needs to capture liquid in action and not the aftermath. If it’s still dripping, flying through the air or splashing, it qualifies."
Close up (100s and 1000s)
"This small candy brief is all about getting your lens close to the object. You must feature these tiny hundreds & thousands but you don’t need to use them all, and if you need more you are free to source your own."
Bokeh (Experimental)
"Photography was born from those who loved to experiment. This is a lesser known experiment that has been around since photography first began.You must choose and attach only one of the supplied Bokeh hoods to the front of your lens when you create your image. This brief will require a little more prep work but the effect is well worth the patience."
Portraiture (Glasses)
"This is a portraiture brief where you must feature the supplied black spectacles. Other than that its open to your interpretation. Consider your lighting choices and your choice of subject. The winning image will present the viewer with just as many questions as answers. A portrait is all about capturing a personality and you don't necessarily need to see the whole person (or all of the glasses) to achieve that."
Practically Black (Low light)
"Practically black is an OPEN BRIEF which means that even those who have missed out on this years EOS Photo5 box can still enter. This is the first year a brief like this has existed. The ‘Practically Black’ brief is about shooting in dark situations while still maintaining details in the image. We expect to receive very moody imagery for this brief."

These are plaster casts of Joseph Arch’s (1826-1919) hands. Joseph Arch worked as hedger and ditcher in Barford, Warwickshire and went on to found the National Agricultural Labourer’s Union (NALU) in 1872. There were other, regional unions representing farm workers at the time, but the NALU was the largest, and at its peak in 1874 the membership stood at 86,214.

This woman is actually attractive, but has done a great job of not being so.
My daughter and I will be appearing in a play next weekend, for three nights. This was taken at the first dress rehearsal.
The play is a comedy, called Stand and Deliver, set in a maternity ward. These are the orderlies.
