Big Happy New Year card by Pathé. Photo: Christian Clavier and Gérard Depardieu in Astérix & Obélix contre César/Asterix and Obelix Take on Caesar (Claude Zidi, 1999).

French actor and writer Christian Clavier (1952) is known for such popular films as Les visiteurs (1993), Astérix & Obélix contre César (1999) and Just Visiting (2001).

Gérard Depardieu (1948) with his trademark bulbous nose is France’s biggest male film star. He developed from France’s young male sensation in 1974 into a bulging and controversial but very talented character actor. Since 1967, he completed over 240 films and received more César nominations than anyone else. Since the critical acclaim for his role as Cyrano de Bergerac, he achieved worldwide stardom.

Suzy Renard (?-?) was a stage actress who had a small film career too.

Renard did the Conservatoire in Paris, but according to the stage journal La Rampe she received a harsh judgment by the jury in 1918, but she did won second prize in the categorie comedy. Still, the same year she joined a tournee around France with the play La Reine Wanda, starring Pierre Magnier. The next year, in 1919, the Comédie Française engaged Renard for its Summer tour, where she debuted in Le Dépit amoureux. December 1919 she acted at the Comédie française in Les Soeurs d'amour by Bataille, starring Léon Bernard and Thérèse Kolb, January 1920 in Trivelino and Scaramouche, and June 1920 in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, with Albert Lambert fils as Romeo and Mlle Piérat as Juliet, in addition to Paul Mounet, Dehelly, Jean Hervé, Alcover, etc. The Summer of 1920 Renard acted with the same company in Hernani. Renard, though, never became a pensionnaire nor a sociétaire of the Comédie. In the satirical journal Les Potins de Paris, her collaboration with the respectful Comédie Française was even criticized and ridiculed. Anyway, Renard apparently left the Comédie after one year and focused on light comedy on the stage. In 1921 she could be spotted in a supporting part in Le Chasseur de chez Maxim's, performed at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal in Paris, and starring Adrien Le Gallo, Pierre Bressol, and Jane Marken.

Renard debuted in cinema in 1918, in the Gaumont drama Le Noël d'Yveline (Georges-André Lacroix, 1918), also with Suzy Prim and Simone Vaudry. In 1920 she was with Blanche Ritier one of the leads in the Film d'Art production Illusions by Jean Manoussi. The male lead was for newcomer Jean Lord, a pseudonym possibly for Manoussi himself. Other parts were for Pierre Batcheff and Gaston Jacquet. Her last part according to IMDB was in a short, La revanche de Suzanne (1921), for whom he director is unknown. Renard's male co-actor was Jacques Guilhène. Yet, this was not her real last film. In 1924 Renard seems to have been also in a Feydeau adaptation, the comedy Un fil à la patte, by Robert Saidreau, and starring Armand Bernard. Renard is listed at IMDB as Suzanne Renard for this film, but papers from 1924 indicate it was Suzy.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey movie premiere: Sydney, Australia...

'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' enjoyed its Sydney, Australia red carpet movie premiere at George Street Event Cinemas tonight.

A crowd of hundreds of general public and dozens of media welcomed in the popular film franchise.

Promo:

Set in Middle-earth 60 years before The Lord of the Rings, the adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug.

Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of 13 dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain, first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of ingenuity and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities… A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, the character he played in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, with Martin Freeman in the central role of Bilbo Baggins, and Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield.

Also reprising their roles from The Lord of the Rings in The Hobbit trilogy are: Cate Blanchett as Galadriel; Ian Holm as the elder Bilbo; Christopher Lee as Saruman; Hugo Weaving as Elrond; Elijah Wood as Frodo; and Andy Serkis as Gollum.

The international ensemble cast of the trilogy also includes Manu Bennett, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Barry Humphries, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Sylvester McCoy, Bret McKenzie, Graham McTavish, James Nesbitt, Dean O’Gorman, Conan Stevens, Ken Stott and Aidan Turner.

The screenplay for “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” is by Fran Walsh & Philippa Boyens & Peter Jackson & Guillermo del Toro. Jackson is also producing the film, together with Carolynne Cunningham, Zane Weiner and Fran Walsh. The executive producers are Alan Horn, Toby Emmerich, Ken Kamins and Carolyn Blackwood, with Boyens and Eileen Moran serving as co-producers.

Storyline:

Bilbo Baggins is swept into a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers. Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever ... Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum's "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities

A younger and more reluctant Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, sets out on a "unexpected journey" to the Lonely Mountain with a spirited group of Dwarves to reclaim a their stolen mountain home from a dragon named Smaug.

Summary: Many entertainment commentators including the Media Man agency think that 'The Hobbit' may be one of the best and most popular movies in Australia for 2012, despite the late release in the year. One for the whole family, and both casual and die hard fans should love it.

Special thanks to everyone who helped make tonight such a big success. See you at the movies again soon.

Director: Peter Jackson

Writers: Fran Walsh (screenplay), Philippa Boyens (screenplay), Guillermo del Toro, Peter Jackson

Hampton Court - Is that Henry VIII?

Cardinal Thomas Wolsey acquired the 14th Century manor at Hampton Court in 1514. Construction on a new palace began in 1515, and the resulting 1,000-room country house was finer than King Henry VIII's own palaces--a problem that Henry solved by appropriating the estate in the 1520s. Henry expanded the palace, which remained largely unchanged until the reign of William and Mary, when the Tudor structure was modernized under the direction of Christopher Wren. The last monarch to live in the palace was George II, who died in 1760.

The Postcard

A postcard bearing no studio name that was posted in Forest Hill, London S.E. The photograph is high-definition.

Forest Hill is a leafy residential area near its namesake railway station. Set in landscaped gardens with a weekly farmers’ market and outdoor summer concerts, the family-friendly Horniman Museum has an aquarium, a beloved stuffed walrus, and a musical instrument collection. At the edge of the neighbourhood, Blythe Hill Fields park has sweeping views of the city skyline.

The house number is 51; if anyone recognises exactly where is is, please leave a note.

The card was posted on Friday the the 20th. October 1911 to:

Mother Ursula,

Ursuline Convent,

Westgate-on-Sea,

Kent.

The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:

"Dear Mother Ursula,

Please accept all kind

thoughts and best wishes

for a very happy feast.

Yours sincerely,

S. & J. Gibbons & little ones".

The writer would have been referring to the Feast of St. Ursula which takes place every year on the 21st. October.

Ursuline Convent

Ursuline College (formerly Ursuline Convent School) is a Catholic secondary school located in Westgate-on-Sea, in north-east Kent. Aimed at pupils aged 11 to 19, the college is based within the Ursuline and Catholic ethos, aiding and teaching its pupils within this regime.

The school in Westgate-on-Sea was established in 1904 when a group of Ursuline Sisters fled Boulogne-sur-Mer with a number of their pupils. Although their school in Boulogne-sur-Mer had existed since 1624, laws passed in France had made it impossible for the Sisters to continue their work of Christian education in France.

Initially the school was set up as a boarding school for girls, meeting the needs of parents working in the Colonies or serving in the Forces.

Tony Award-winning actor Annaleigh Ashford joined fellow Broadway Coloradans Beth Malone ("Fun Home") and Mara Davi ("Dames at Sea" for "United in Love," a special concert event benefiting the Denver Actors Fund on April 30 at the Lone Tree Arts Center. The three were "back to give back," joined by powerhouse singer, actor and First Lady of Denver Mary Louise; Broadway’s Jodie Langel ("Les Misérables"); composer Denise Gentilini ("I Am Alive") and Denver performers Jimmy Bruenger, Eugene Ebner, Becca Fletcher, Clarissa Fugazzotto, Robert Johnson, Daniel Langhoff, Susannah McLeod, Chloe McLeod, Sarah Rex, Jeremy Rill, Kristen Samu, Willow Samu, Thaddeus Valdez, and the casts of both "The Jerseys" (Klint Rudolph, Brian Smith, Paul Dwyer and Randy St. Pierre), and the all-student cast of the upcoming "13 the Musical" (Rylee Vogel, Josh Cellar, Hannah Meg Weinraub, Hannah Katz, Lorenzo Giovannetti, Maddie Kee, Kaden Hinkle, Darrow Klein, Evan Gibley, Conrad Eck and Macy Friday). The purpose of the evening was to spread a message of love and hope while raising funds for the Denver Actors Fund, which has made $90,000 available to local theatre artists facing situational medical need. The concert was presented by presented by Ebner-Page Productions. Photos by RDG Photography, Gary Duff and DCPA Senior Arts Journalist John Moore, also the founder of the Denver Actors Fund.
