Algoma is a small port city in Kewaunee County in northeastern Wisconsin. Originally named Ahnapee, the city was once home to the largest commercial fishing fleet on Lake Michigan. Today, sport fishing is a major tourist attraction.
In June 2007, a group of mural artists converged on Downtown Algoma to create a series of historic representations of mural advertisement reflective of businesses, products, activity and people from Algoma’s history. Along with colorful commercial signage, they provide the downtown with a distinctive artistic flair.
The current Algoma Light was built in 1908 and modified in 1932. The conical tower currently stands 42 feet high and measures 12 feet in diameter at the base. It was automated in 1973.
