Geddings has always been a great actor for many of our different theme trials no matter how odd they have been.
I have heard:“Character shots often just make actors look ‘cheesy’ and like they’re ‘amateurs’.”
Is that not the essence of good Comedy and Entertainment? A “Character shot” is a role just like any other. How good it comes out is dependent on the actor.
For the actor, the focus has to be on the role and making that role work. No matter what it looks like or how cheesy the costumes and situations are.
I have seen good results with some of my actors who use them.
One example is a girl who does not want to do anything but Horror movies and roles. She has made a number of reels and character shots along the skills of what is required for horror roles. This includes reels that highlight her ability to scream and fly into a murderous rage.
This is her specialty and she loves doing it. The casting feed back on her portfolio has always been good and she is usually in the good running for many of the roles she goes after.
For me when I cast:
Character shots and reels which are specific to the role we are casting for are great. For it gives us an idea of what that actor can do in the skill sets we are looking for related to that role.
It also shows the actor is enthusiastic about that genre.

Scratch build car, greased lightning, for the musical, Grease (high school) build from luan plywood on 2x3 frame. Engine (replaceable with bad engine for before scene) is also luan plywood glued on 2x3 blocks and uses 2 aluminum cook drip pans and PVC pipes. The car features WalMart driving lights and Mustang mag wheels right off my car.

An Intermediate Acting class at The Williston Northampton School recently completed a unit on the Italian Comedy (commedia dell’arte) in which students used masks made by David Watson, of the Hartt School, specifically for the program.

In their claustrophobic studio flat, a struggling young actor confronts the supposed source of their misery, an acting examiner who motivated them to start a career in the arts by once giving them one hundred percent on an acting exam.
The subsequent psychological showdown spirals as tea turns to tension and inner truths are exposed. Desperate for validation, the embittered actor demands catharsis for a life derailed by ambition whilst the examiner must face the unintended consequences of their previous life.
These two rivals battle in the realm of passive and active aggression, through subterfuge, mind-games, and rolling power dynamics as awkward small talk, tea, and biscuits take on new and revealing meanings.
This play will have you on the edge of your seat as you wince, laugh, and cringe at the pain and joy of self-belief and ultimately wonder just whether the turmoil of ‘being an artist’ is really worth it.
