The sun's final act Sunday evening (5-13-2012) as it sets behind the I-24 bridge over the Tennessee River at Calvert City/Gilbertsville, just downstream from the Kentucky Lake Dam at Grand Rivers, Kentucky.
Except for cropping and re-sizing, this is an unedited photo (no adjustments of levels, exposures, curves, etc.). Never had seen kangaroos in a circus act before - notice the concerned look on the clown's face - but it seemed to work out well. :-)
PLUTON - ACT 3

Iceland is, in geological terms, a young island. It started to form about 20 million years ago from a series of volcanic eruptions on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The Iceland hotspot is likely partly responsible for the island´s creation and continued existence.
Iceland remained one of the world´s last larger islands uninhabited by humans. It has been suggested that the land called Thule by the Greek merchant Pytheas was actually Iceland, although it seems highly unlikely considering Pytheas´ description of it as an agricultural country with plenty of milk, honey, and fruit. The exact date that humans first reached the island is uncertain. Ancient Roman coins dating to the 3rd century have been found in Iceland, but it is unknown whether they were brought there at that time, or came later with Viking settlers, having circulated as currency already for centuries.

Back into the swing of it now that I can take sharp photos again.
BUT - I really have had it with Canon, their ability to sort out focus problems in their newer cameras (no I don't mean for general use, I mean critical focus with long sharp lenses on small targets, and using AI Servo target tracking) combined with their terrible customer relations means I'm now officially keeping an eye on Nikon, Sony and Red for new offerings. While on the topic, it looks like very exciting times for DSLR users in the next couple of years - big changes coming. Starting in a small way with the amazing Sony A900 (in terms of specifications for the dollar) and perhaps to be continued with the imminent Canon 5D Mk 2. Then ... will Red be able to repeat the success they are having in the cine camera field in the DSLR market? They promise they will, and in only a year or so too.
www.red.com/ and check the link "DSLR-killer" bottom left.
Sony are also releasing what is claimed to be a high quality 70-400 f4-5.6 lens that would be a great tool if it performs. They don't need to incorporate stabilisation in the lens so ... less weight and potentially faster focus. Which reminds me that upgrading their 10-year old 100-400 lens design is another area in which Canon have failed to listen and act. (Although they will release a new model in the next month or two since I just bought the old version!).
Do I love Crested Pigeons? You bet! At least to look at, not so happy with their invasive tactics around Canberra. They are certainly a resilient and resourceful species and waste no time in unnecessary sophistication. Their nest is a disgrace - the one I saw was a few twigs haphazardly placed in such a manner as to just support the eggs without them toppling out of the bush.
This is a shot of people walking over a direction sign that was nailed on the floor of a wooden bridge at Edwards Gardens, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. But it reminded me of images of rebels marching over a fallen city.

On June 2nd, in celebration of National Trails Day and the 50th anniversary of the National Trails System Act, the BLM, in cooperation with National Pony Express Association and Lincoln Highway Association representatives, led a guided tour of the Pony Express National Historic Trail through lands managed by the BLM Salt Lake Field Office. The Pony Express National Historic Trail was added to the National Trail System on August 3, 1992 and extends from Saint Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California. The trail commemorates the two year run of the Pony Express Mail Service. While the Pony Express only ran from 1860-1861, the trail is also linked to early western explorers, a stagecoach service, the first transcontinental telegraph, overland emigrants, and the first cross-country automobile route. Tour attendees experienced the trail through traces left by stagecoaches and riders, listened to cowboy poetry, learned about the history of the trail, and saw landscapes basically unchanged from 1860.
