I was shooting primarily with my Hasselblad and don't have too many digital shots. I'll be creating some HDR from the shots that I have.
Long barrows were constructed as earthen or drystone mounds with flanking ditches and acted as funerary monuments during the Early and Middle Neolithic periods (3400-2400 BC). They represent the burial places of Britain's early farming communities and, as such, are amongst the oldest field monuments surviving visibly in the present landscape. Where investigated, long barrows appear to have been used for communal burial, often with only parts of the human remains having been selected for interment. Certain sites provide evidence for several phases of funerary monument preceding the barrow and, consequently, it is probable that long barrows acted as important ritual sites for local communities over a considerable period of time. Some 500 long barrows are recorded in England. As one of the few types of Neolithic structure to survive as earthworks, and due to their comparative rarity, their considerable age and their longevity as a monument type, all long barrows are considered to be nationally important.
This example has a particularly well-preserved burial chamber and is also of high archaeological potential due to the survival of the remains of the burial mound and the flanking ditches. The burial chamber having been taken into guardianship, the monument is also of high amenity value. The Long Barrow is situated on level ground at the crest of the North Downs overlooking the Medway valley. It is oriented approximately E-W, with the stone chamber near the eastern end. The most distinctive feature of the monument is the H-shaped arrangement of 3 large sarsen slabs, capped by a further slab, which formed the main burial chamber of the Long Barrow. Although these large stones, or megaliths, now stand unsupported, they are believed originally to have been buried within a large, elongated earthen mound, of which only traces survive today. The mound was some 80m in length and 12-15m in width and was probably broader at the eastern end than at the western end. Earth and chalk for the construction of this mound was quarried from the now-infilled flanking ditches which run parallel to it. These quarry ditches are more clearly visible on aerial photographs than on the ground. Such photographs indicate that the northern ditch extended for the full length of the mound while the southern ditch was shorter, not extending as far as either end of the mound. The monument has been the subject of enquiry since 1570, but no satisfactory explanation for the name has yet been found. Historical accounts suggest that the mound was surrounded by a revetment of sarsens positioned at intervals, some of which may survive beneath the ploughsoil but most of which have been unearthed and/or destroyed, the latest as recently as 1947. Although no bones have been reported by any of the investigators of the monument, the strong similarity with other examples which have yielded such evidence allows the safe interpretation of Kit's Coty House as a Neolithic burial monument.

Not the greatest of photos, but I don't have anything else ready from my trip to Alki with Ella, so this will have to do. So, here's a very rare self-portrait with Ella, while balancing on some random little post. And we had to hold it for 3 seconds, which is tough while balancing and holding a 4 year old. I did a little better than her, but not by much. That's okay, the blur hides my ugly mug. :) Oh, and I should really give photo credit for this one to Ella. I let her push the remote shutter button.
Gotta go to dinner with Amy's parents again, so I'll catch up with you all later tonight!

The Federal Dominion Public Building at 269 Main Street.
Construction was financed under the City of Winnipeg’s unemployment relief program of 1932 and Canada’s Public Works Construction Act of 1934.
Together, this cooperation of federal and municipal funding helped create one of the largest buildings constructed in Canada during the Great Depression era.
The Federal Building is based on the architectural designs of George William Northwood (under the direction of T. W. Fuller, Chief Architect of the Public Works Department), and awarded to the local contractor firm of Carter-Halls-Aldinger at a tendered bid of $1,412,229.
The seven-storey building consisted of a steel frame covered with Tyndall-stone with concrete caissons and concrete floors.
Design of the exterior main floor was Norman influenced, with the upper floors in Gothic styling.
The construction project served as relief work for some 1,300 labourers. The exterior was largely completed by December 1935, with the interior work continuing into 1936.
Upon completion, the facility housed federal government offices that were previously spread around the city. The building was ready for occupancy in June 1936.
The Federal Building was classified Federal Heritage Building 11 October, 1990.
I counted 10 of these bright yellow side loaders in the Cleanaway yard, but there might’ve been more out of sight. At present these are the primary trucks handling the residential recycling service across the ACT. I’ve always thought these large recycle bodies look too big on a 4x2 truck =]

Het betrof drie van het Britse EWS overgenomen locs class 58, die in de jaren tachtig werd geleverd aan BR voor de goederendienst, maar daar door de privatisering al snel buiten dienst ging. ACTS nam er drie in lease en schilderde ze in de blauw-gele kleurstelling. Hier wordt de 5811 getankt op de tankplaat van Kijfhoek, met links de enige rode (Railion) Sik, de 303, die overgekomen was van Maastricht Beatrixhaven.
Coleraine. Major Thomas Mitchell passed through here exploring in 1836 and it was because of his favourable reports the Edward Henty took up a squatting run just west of Coleraine in 1837. This was later converted to leasehold which Henty called Merino Downs. The main early homestead named Muntham was on a different run. Henty’s brother-in-law James Bryan squatted here too but his land was soon taken by an official lease by the Whyte brothers in 1846 for their run called Koroite. In time some of their lease was subdivided into smaller properties and in 1870 the rest of the run was resumed for closer settlement. Around 1850 a small settlement emerged called Bryans Creek Crossing, after James Bryan. This was later changed to Coleraine in 1853 when a government town was surveyed. The town grew slowly as the runs around it were so big until the 1880s and beyond. When selection acts were introduced in Victoria the wealthy pastoralists bought up their runs freehold. The Anglican Church opened in 1865, the Catholic Church 1888 and the Presbyterian 1892. Many of the large estates were not broken up until the 1910 closer settlement act and in 1923 when blocks were offered to soldier settlers.

Though she acted in many light entertainment films, Clara Calamai's most famous role will for always be the one of the femme fatale Giovanna in Luchino Visconti's steamy (proto-)neorealist film Ossessione (1943).
Clara Calamai, born 1909 in Prato, Tuscany, debuted in 1938 in the film Pietro Micca, by Aldo Vergano. Soon she had an intense film career, playing in particular in period pieces such as La cena delle beffe (Alessandro Blasetti 1941) - in which she shortly showed her breasts, causing a sensation - but also glamorous comedies and drama's. In 1942 Luchino Visconti prepared his debut Ossessione with Anna Magnani, but she was so visibly pregnant that Calamai had to replace her. Visconti stripped Calamai of her usual glamour and turned her into the passionate but poor wife of a fat trattoria owner, who manages to convince her lover to kill her husband. The film, based on James M. Cain's The Postman Always Twice, is quite different though from the Tay Garnett version. The real eye catcher of the film is namely not the femme fatale Giovanna but the hunk she falls in love with: Gino, played by Massimo Girotti. Memorable is the scene in which Giovanna falls asleep amidst an enormous amount of dirty dishes. Ossessione had a very short circulation in catholic and fascist Italy because of its amorality and mocking of clergy. Outside of Italy it was shown only years after the war, because of copyright infringement. Clara Calamai played, again, in 1946 a role Magnani was supposed to have had: L'adultera, by Duilio Coletti, for which Calamai won a Nastro d'argento. Instead rumor goes Calamai was pregnant herself when the female lead of Roberto Rossellini's Rome Open City (Roma, città aperta, 1945) was distributed. And so Magnani got the role, which immortalized her.
Clara Calamai worked again with Visconti in Le notti bianche (1957), in which she played a prostitute. NB Visconti suggests that Giovanna in Ossessione has slept with men for money before marrying. In Visconti's episode La strega bruciata viva (1966) of the episode film Le streghe, Calamai played a small part opposite the lead Silvana Mangano. After years of retirement, Calamai came back to the screen in Dario Argento's highly successful horror movie Profondo Rosso (1975). The film and her role got cult status with cinephiles. She was almost 90 when she died in Rimini in 1998. All in all, Clara Calamai has played in almost 50 films; most films date from the war years and the immediate aftermath.

Life is a balancing act. We all know that. There is work that has to be done and we have to take care of our bodies, but if we don’t take time to do something we enjoy, we will get depressed or anxious or just plain burn out. It’s a daily struggle to find the right balance.
This is my hobby table that is also supposed to be where I set up for photos, but right now it is overflowing with a craft project so I am having to set up my photos somewhere else. On the left are some Smurf houses that I am using for my February Alphabet Group project. I am featuring Smurfs. (It’s a really fun group, by the way. Every February we take pictures representing each letter of the alphabet.) On the bottom of both piles are stacks of containers with beads that I am using to make earrings. Then there are some craft tools, a book I am reading, some healthy food that I am trying to take time to fix and eat every day, my camera of course, a dirty sock (got to do the laundry!), a can of cat food (have to feed the cat!) and a watering can. (can't let the plants die!) And of course the dreaded “to do” list. I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and every day it is a challenge to prioritize what needs to be done. Some days are “couch days” and I struggle just to fix a healthy meal, and other days I have energy and can get things done. I am learning to focus on what’s important and let other things go. I have also realized that feeding the spirit by doing something I enjoy (Flickr comes to mind) is just as important as feeding my body and getting the work done.
ODC Balancing Act
Hundreds of empty drawers stand in the Reichstag in Berlin - a present by the Allies. Each of them is tagged with the name of a member of the Bundestag. Even Adolf Hitler has one (he was elected democratically). But his drawer must be replaced two to three times a year because some enraged visitors smash it up.

The Fox Squirrel's natural range extends throughout the eastern United States, excluding New England, north into the southern prairie provinces of Canada, and west to the Dakotas, Colorado, and Texas.
They have been introduced to both Northern and Southern California.
Whoever had that bright idea did not clear it with me first.
