Among the best preserved monastic sites in England, the immense size of Castle Acre Priory in Norfolk can’t fail to impress. It was founded in about 1090 by William de Warenne II and reflects his family’s devotion to the famous French monastery of Cluny. It is open to the public thanks to English Heritage.

The ruins of Castle Acre Castle in Norfolk – all that is left of the castle built soon after the Battle of Hastings by William de Warenne, the Earl of Surrey. It is a well-preserved example of a motte-and-bailey castle, and remains one of the most impressive Norman earthworks in the country.

By 1397 the fortifications were in ruins and, despite restoration work by Sir Edward Coke at the start of the 17th century, the decline continued until the 20th century. In 1971, Thomas Coke, the Earl of Leicester, placed the castle into the guardianship of the state. The site is maintained by English Heritage.

This one has been around for a few days, I find them so challenging. They never stop moving, and if they do, it is in the shadows. Cute little ones though :)

I woke to a beautiful winter scene this morning, my first snowfall at Long Acre Manor. I sat having a coffee and watching the Sunrise over the fresh snowfall, as the light and shadows formed over the garden and the grounds cottage I had to go and get this stunning image, Happy Wednesday Flickr Friends. Stay safe to all those with snow and thank you for visiting my photostream ~ KissThePixel2019

Lone Elk Park - The park acreage was once a part of the 2,400-acre Tyson Valley Powder Plant used for the testing and storage of ammunition during WWII. In 1948 herds of elk and bison were established. In 1964 St. Louis County reacquired a portion of the original tract from the General Services Administration and in 1966 the name was changed from Tyson Park to Lone Elk County Park. Six additional elk were obtained from Yellowstone National Park in 1966

Digging through some files I ran across this scene at a farm I found along a back road. Morning is always a great time to get out there and explore.

Sometimes the photo topic for the day at We’re Here! is still designated as “TBA” when the day arrives. That’s because someone was unable (or forgot) to get it updated. So then we all visit the group, The TBA Club. My “TBA” topic is “The Beautiful Acres”.

Speaking of forgetting! I drove 45 minutes to the tiny town of Ault for the first photo walk I’ve had time for in ages. Then I discovered I’d forgotten my camera. Thank goodness I remembered my phone. I noticed lots of interesting stuff to photograph. Another day.

Castle Acre Priory

Castle Acre is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. The village is situated on the River Nar some 4 miles north of the town of Swaffham and 33 miles west of the city of Norwich.

The Bailey Gate was originally part of the castle defences, it stands at the northern end of Bailey St and was built in the early 13th century.

The village is most famous for being the location of Castle Acre Castle which was built in 1085 by William de Warenne in order to enforce his control over his East Anglian lands, and the ruins of Castle Acre Priory which was established in 1090 by William de Warenne for an order of Cluniac monks.

The Acre Aqueduct, also known as the Al-Basha Aqueduct, is an Ottoman-era water system originally constructed in the late 18th century to supply fresh water to the city of Acre from springs near Kabri.

During Napoleon’s 1799 siege of Acre, sections of the aqueduct were damaged to cut the city’s water supply. The system was later restored and rebuilt, with most of the standing arched section dating to reconstruction works completed in 1814 under Sulayman Pasha.

The aqueduct transported water across several kilometers using elevated arches, canals, and underground conduits, forming one of the region’s most significant historic infrastructure projects.

At the turn of the last century an only child was born to this remote three acre smallholding, The boy and his family were the last to live there. He walked 3 miles across rough moorland in all weathers to school. For more than 25 years he served as a highly regarded schoolteacher and newspaper editor. He was one of Wales' foremost writers and poets, winning the chair at a National Eisteddfod for his poetry.
