Having recently acquired quite a few dark green plates, I wanted to try a landscape in that color and chose to put a small tower/cottage combo on it. There is a full interior, though because of the small size the furnishings are fairly frugal. Both doors are functional as well. The corner stonework was inspired by Dwalin Forkbeard, the cottage was inspired by Legopard, the ‘gear’ mushrooms were borrowed from Captain Flint, and the tower windows were inspired by Gideon.

I recently acquired a stack of South Shore Line color prints taken by the late Bernie Smith between 1967 and 1971. Here is an EB train at Hammond in October, 1968. Check out the cool South Shore sign at right. As in many of his shots, Bernie's son is seen (at the corner of the station).

Sell one acquire two :) . So I let go few of my lenses I like but do not use that much that is worth keeping them. I replaced them with Diax IIa german camera from 50es. Two lenses came with it. This is one of them. Schneider Kreuznah Xenon 50mm f2. Retina version of this lens is just a hint faster ( f1.9) and is one of my favourite lenses. So, I was curious about differences. It is to early to say anything. First impression.

This image has been produced from memory and may need a little tweaking if it prompts anyone to offer photographic evidence (I recall seeing a picture a few years ago). George Stephenson & Company Limited of Bishop Auckland was one of the largest building contractor in south-west Durham. The yards at Bishop Auckland and Tindale Crescent were an Aladdin's Cave to anyone interested in elderly vehicles - particularly ex-military kit. My favourites were the Leyland Hippo tippers with the 'RAF' style cabs (as per the pressure refuellers).

Bus-wise Stephensons had operated pre-war Bristol J-Types and post-war L-Type before acquiring this Bristol LS (I imagined there were more but this is the only one that I can be sure of). New in 1955 to United Automobile Services as VHN 899 (fleet number BU99), it was withdrawn in 1971, passing to Stephensons for staff transport. The company ceased trading sometime in the late 1970s.

The Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Company was organized in 1920 and quickly acquired older steel mill facilities across the Ohio River. The roots of the company go back to the middle of the last century when Wheeling, West Virginia, which lies on the banks of the Ohio River, was the center of a flourishing nail manufacturing industry. The No. 1 Blast Furnace in Steubenville produced iron from 1899 (when it was constructed by the Labelle Iron Works) until 2005. When it was idled it was one of the oldest blast furnaces in the United States. Labor strikes and deteriorating industry conditions forced Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1985 and again in 2000. By the time it closed, the factory featured two blast furnaces, 11 open hearth furnaces, a blooming mill, hot strip mill, pickle line, and cold reduction mills. It produced hot rolled sheets and plates and cold rolled sheets and coils. In 2013, the entire factory, along with its iconic blast furnaces, were demolished for scrap. "Those two blast furnaces were the best in the world. They would put out great iron. It was sad to see them shut down. It is sad to know they are gone forever. It was a tough job working there, but we were all family. Guys would help each other," reflected Bill Ellis, who worked for 33 years at the two blast furnaces in Steubenville.

Acquired by Locomotive Services Limited (LSL) from DB, Class 60 No.60081 the former “Isambard Kingdom Brunel” is seen outside the paint shop at Toton having undergone cosmetic restoration by DB with the purpose being to go on static display at the museum in Margate on the site of the old Hornby factory. This loco failed on 6L55 near Chester back in 2005 where it quite famously ejected a leg ultimately sealing its fate as it was moved to Toton TMD soon after where its remained until being sold.

Hamilton’s Vision

Painshill 18th century landscape garden was created between 1738 and 1773, by the Hon. Charles Hamilton.

Born in Dublin in 1704, Hamilton, the ninth son and 14th child of the Sixth Earl of Abercorn, embarked on two Grand Tours across Europe before acquiring the land at Painshill. With ancient artefacts in his luggage and Italian romance and natural beauty in his head – along with exotic plants seen on his tours – his vision was to create ‘living paintings’ in a new style of magical garden.

Inspired by Renaissance art and his Grand Tours, Hamilton went on to create a sequence of breathtaking and surprising vistas at Painshill. The landscapes form living works of art into which Hamilton placed follies for dramatic effect.

Acquired in August 2020, Hulleys 3, an Enviro 400 acquired from Metroline, can often be found working route 272 from Sheffield.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the vehicle allocated on a Saturday - perhaps the route gets busier later on in the journey.

Another acquired photo; this is labelled as being near Cholsey and taken during APT-E speed trials on the GWML on 16 August 1975. It appears to be on the up main and I am therefore guessing that the photo was taken from the overbridge at the London end of the station. The small driver's window is obvious! I never saw the APT-E during its test period.

Excerpt from Wikipedia:

After the Republic of Dubrovnik acquired the Pelješac in 1334, it required the protection of Ston. First, in thirty years, one of the longest defense walls in Europe was erected on one side of the peninsula, and according to a unique project, two new towns were planned: southern Ston and northern Little Ston with the aim of encompassing people to preserve the boundaries and work in solanas the state had acquired. Between 1461 and 1464, the Florentine architect Michelozzo commissioned the building of the wall by the order of the Dubrovnik Republic. The Great Wall is 1200 m long, and was built to ensure protection from neighbours. The chronicles state that the construction of the wall lasted for 18 months and cost 12,000 ducats.

The fortress of Ston was one of the largest construction projects of the time, with an original length of 7000 m, consisting of the walls of Ston and Little Ston. The Great Wall consists of three fortresses, and the walls and fortresses are flanked by 10 rounds of 31 squares and 6 semi-circular bastions. The complex defense corps has been shaped over the course of four centuries, due to the development of weapons.

The walls were of great importance because they were defending the saltworks that gave 15,900 ducats every year to the Dubrovnik Republic, the shellfish farm and the city itself.

In 1667, about 0.5 km of walls was destroyed in a catastrophic earthquake, and the walls were significantly damaged in the earthquakes in 1979 and 1996.

In 2004, work on the restoration of obsolete walls was started, with the aim of facilitating visits to the area between Ston and Little Ston. It was assumed that the works would be completed by May 2008, but only the original part of the Ston Bridge was rebuilt. The reconstruction of the Great Wall in Ston, worth about five million kuna (€673,000), was completed, and it was announced that the stone walls with public entrance fee will be opened in May 2009.

Yesterday (on my way to Union station, to pick up my train tickets!), I was exiting the subway when I felt a tap on my shoulder. A woman handed me her card and asked if she could photograph me for a fashion blog! I'm no major fashionista, but I'm rather fond of reading the Sartorialist from time to time. Mostly because I love his photographs. Anyway, it was kind of cool to have it happen to me, even on such a small, local scale.

Funnily enough, what I was wearing was a result of the ol' last-clean-clothes-I-own, why-didn't-I-do-my-damned-laundry syndrome. Go figure! Plus, my entire outfit cost me less than 50 bucks, shoes included. Heh. Take that, expensive fashion fiends! Though she was mostly preoccupied with my socks, shoes and hair, it seemed. I almost always do my hair this way… it's pretty trademark Jasmine. I just braid it up in a swiss alps ish way, to avoid having to fight the curly poofies.

I recently acquired (for free!) a broken Minolta 45mm lens. Its aperture ring and focus ring do not do anything! The lens is stuck at f/2.0 and focus distance of no more than six inches. Focus is achieved by moving the subject and/or the camera. I used the focusing rail whose image I posted here few weeks ago. More than the sharpness of this lens, I like the softness of the out-of-focus areas. It is so creamy!

Shot with this broken lens mounted through adapter on Sony a6000. The colors/tones adjusted in Lightroom, then cropped and saved as JPG file in Photoshop. Light coming in from a window provided the lighting. No artificial light (flash / strobe) was used.

I acquired this slightly questionable minifig at Brickworld Chicago (from a “seconds” bin at a custom minifig maker). I don’t know if it’s really scratch and sniff - see the photo of her back - but if you did, you’d smell smoke. Canadian wildfire smoke is back with a vengeance. The sky today was milky white with smoke and you could smell it very strongly. The air quality reached a value of 164 which is classified as “very unhealthy”.

Acquiring a new puppy has been months in the works, and finally Willa is home with us! A nine-week old Weimaraner from Trax Weimaraners (www.traxweimaraners.com/index.html), the plan is to do agility, obedience, tracking, and more, when we're not just squealing about how cute she is. Lots of pictures to come... she'll only be little once, and the crazy blue eyes will change color as she ages.

I just acquired a Rolleiflex Tessar 3.5 from a friend, and gave it a spin this afternoon. Very nice for an old, uncoated lens.

This kite spots its next victim and positions itself to strike. The 'victim' is a stink bug, and I have been watching them feed on them as they prepare to head south. An elegant and maneuverable hunter, they pick their food off of trees, the ground and out of the air!

Acquired on November 29 by Operation IceBridgeduring a flight to Victoria Land, this image shows an iceberg floating in Antarctica's McMurdo Sound. The part of the iceberg below water appears bluest primarily due to blue light from the water in the Sound. The undersides of some icebergs can be eroded away, exposing older, denser, and incredibly blue ice. Erosion can change an iceberg's shape and cause it to flip, bringing the sculpted blue ice above the water's surface. The unique step-like shape of this berg—compared to the tabular and more stable berg in the top-right of the image—suggests that it likely rotated sometime after calving.

Originally supplied to Brighton Corporation whom operated 44 AEC 661T / Weymann body built in 1939 and eight BUT 9611T / Weymann body built 1947 trolleybuses, they were later incorporated within the Brighton Hove & District fleet.

The Brighton Trolleybus system started to be replaced from 1959 with it closing on the 30 June 61.

Seen late on a dull early autumnal day at the Hawk Conservancy near Andover, in their large, natural wild meadow, this Barn Owl (Tyto Alba) is closing in on some food.

This is a pale, long-winged, long-legged owl, 33–39 cm in length with an 80–95 cm wingspan. Its head and upper parts are buff, and the underparts are white. The face is heart-shaped. It has an effortless wavering flight as it quarters pastures or similar hunting grounds.

Alternative names often refer to the appearance, white underparts, or eerie, silent flight, including Monkey-faced Owl, Ghost Owl, Church Owl, Golden Owl, Rat Owl and Stone Owl. It has a notable shreee scream, ear-shattering at close range and can also hiss like snakes. When captured or cornered, they throw themselves on their backs and flail with sharp-taloned feet, an effective defence.

Contrary to popular belief, they do not make the call "tu-whit to-whoo" (which is made by the Tawny Owl). Barn Owls occur worldwide, on every continent except Antarctica. They are absent from large areas of Asia, the Sahara Desert and New Zealand.

These are birds of open country such as farmland, preferring to hunt along the edges of woods, feeding mostly on rodents. Each one may consume 1-7 rodents per night; a nesting pair and their young can eat thousands of rodents per year. The Barn Owl flies silently. Its ears are placed asymmetrically for maximum hearing, so the owls do not require sight to hunt. They can target and dive down to sink their talons through snow, grass or brush and seize rodents with deadly accuracy.

Compared to other owls of similar size, the Barn Owl has a much higher metabolic rate, requiring relatively more food. Pound for pound, they consume more rodent pests than possibly any other creature. This makes the Barn Owl one of the most economically valuable wildlife animals to farmers who find them more effective than poisons.

Predators of Barn Owls include opossums, raccoons, certain snakes, and other raptors such as hawks, eagles, and larger owls (including the Great Horned Owl and the Eurasian Eagle Owl). But their worst enemy is man, who has often killed them due to superstition, or ignorance of the bird's benefits. Barn Owls are relatively common throughout most of their range but are rare in Britain, with only some 4,400 breeding pairs.

A rose is a woody perennial flowering plant of the genus Rosa, in the family Rosaceae. There are over three hundred species and thousands of cultivars. They form a group of plants that can be erect shrubs, climbing, or trailing, with stems that are often armed with sharp prickles. Flowers vary in size and shape and are usually large and showy, in colours ranging from white through yellows and reds. Most species are native to Asia, with smaller numbers native to Europe, North America, and northwestern Africa. Species, cultivars and hybrids are all widely grown for their beauty and often are fragrant. Roses have acquired cultural significance in many societies. Rose plants range in size from compact, miniature roses, to climbers that can reach seven meters in height. Different species hybridize easily, and this has been used in the development of the wide range of garden roses. 67153

Night photo of some massive gears in this long exposure photo showing the celestial movements of the beautiful desert sky. I snuck in a quick visit just before Thanksgiving Day, photographing for two nights in a row in the California desert near the Mexican border. And I managed to stay awake for Thanksgiving dinner the following evening!! Although warm and sunny during the day, by the time I packed up, it was below freezing and I had ice on my windshield. I illuminated the scene from several angles with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the exposure. Thanks for looking.

A Short-Eared Owl dives into a bush, during a frosty morning in Jan, probably after a Vole. I really miss shooting that time of year/area. Sunrise was not too early (8am), so I didn't have to get up at 4am or something, to make the hour drive up.

The cold air was really nice (20F), keeping things nice and clean/crisp. Plus giving some epic colors. I really hope I can do it again this year/next year.
