Moai and pukao cast down in the island's civil wars.
Platform will not be restored. Archaeological studies.
The 8 moai are now hunched in the exact position they were in when they were toppled, while the cylindrical pukaos (hair buns of the Polynesians) rolled great distances, two had to be removed from the bay.
***
After they were finished, the Moai were taken to the so-called Ahu, which were ceremonial platforms of stones that served as cemeteries for the noblest of the clan.
About 880 moai have been found on the island. 288 of these Moai are believed to have been taken and lifted on a platform. 397 moai remained in their factory (the Rano Raraku quarry) and 92 Moai were found on what would be the path between the quarry and the Tahu.
The Ahu Moai era lasted about 800 years. The intense need to always build more Moais and always bigger and more detailed, caused the overexploitation of the island's resources. Then, causing the depletion of resources in the 17th century.
Anyway, the scarcity generated fights between the clans, causing war where all Moai were overthrown. This act demoralized the "enemy" and was the greatest offense that a clan could receive. With the fall of the Moai, the Rapa Nui's devotion to their ancestors came to an end, and the power of the Ariki (king) was significantly reduced.
All of the Moais that remain on Easter Island today have been restored and replaced in that way. After the Ahu Moai era, there was no Moai left over the Ahu (platforms).
Huri Moai era:
Around 1680, the Huri Moai era began. This period was marked by the scarcity of resources and wars between the Rapa Nui clans. Thus, in this period new political and religious expressions gained strength, focusing mainly on the god Make-Make, on fertility and the power of matato’a (warrior leaders).
In order to lessen disputes, the Birdman competition was created. Eventually, through this competition, a new leader would be elected annually. Competitors needed to swim to Motu Nui Island (located right in front of Orongo) and capture the egg of the Manutara bird. The first to return to Orongo with the egg intact would be recognized as Tangata Manu, the reincarnation of the creator God Make-Make. Then, he became the island's leader for a year. Thus, the achievement of the highest rank on the island was no longer hereditary and became merit.
The most important ceremony of this cult took place in the village of Orongo, located at the top of the Rano Kau volcano.

In the 11th century, William de Volpiano, the Italian architect who had built the Abbey of Fécamp in Normandy, was chosen by Richard II of Normandy to be the building contractor of the new Abbey of Mont Saint-Michel. He designed the Romanesque church of the abbey, daringly placing the transept crossing at the top of the mount. Many underground crypts and chapels had to be built to compensate for this weight; these formed the basis for the supportive upward structure that can be seen today. Today Mont Saint-Michel is seen as a building of Romanesque architecture.
Robert de Thorigny, a great supporter of Henry II of England (who was also Duke of Normandy), reinforced the structure of the buildings and built the main façade of the church in the 12th century. In 1204, Guy de Thouars, regent for the Duchess of Brittany, as vassal of the King of France, undertook a siege of the Mount. After having set fire to the village and having massacred the population, he was obliged to beat a retreat under the powerful walls of the abbey. Unfortunately, the fire which he himself lit extended to the buildings, and the roofs fell prey to the flames. Horrified by the cruelty and the exactions of his Breton ally, Philip Augustus offered Abbot Jordan a grant for the construction of a new Gothic architectural set which included the addition of the refectory and cloister.
Charles VI is credited with adding major fortifications to the abbey-mount, building towers, successive courtyards, and strengthening the ramparts.

Love the MadPea Games and events. This one was so much fun, and even better then the spy hunter game. I left it late to start but still managed to squeze in all the achievement. Thank you Madpea for another awesome adventure.
In celebration of man's modern achievement. During Earth Hour 2009, I turned on every light in my house. Both of my cars are idle. A ball of 6 strains of 100 professional outdoor Christmas lights hooked together with 6 balls of 100 lights each surrounding it. To top it off, a 600 watt halogen light pointing at the front door.
Sorry, it isn't as good as I want. I should have exposed another .5 or 1 stop.
The roots of true achievement lie in the will to become the best that you can become.

I keep hearing some international travelers condemn Tokyo Tower because it's largely a copy of the Eiffel Tower. Photo Wise, I'd wager Tokyo Tower is by far the better of the two. I mean, the Eiffel Tower is really only ever shot from the front cause there aren't a whole lot of good compositions, but with the Tokyo Tower you could shoot it from almost any position and get a good shot. The grounds are far more vivid and detailed.
When I was in Japan I actually went out to shoot the tower on multiple nights, primarily because my second time around I was accommodated just a few blocks away. There wasn't a whole lot of leeway because apparently they turn the lights off at midnight (and I had other night shoots to get to).
The plan was to shoot inside the stairway tunnel, which is a more well known shot then I thought cause there was a literal LINE just to get it. That instantly spoke to me saying it just was not worth it (and the guy who was down there when I arrived was taking his own sweet time) so I circled the perimeter of the park a few times before I found this walkway to the northeast, and it was just perfect.
This is one of the better shots I got in Tokyo, the composition could not have been better, and there wasn't a line for this one. In the editing process I saw quite a bit of noise in the sky still, and there was also a bit of construction material down the middle of the walkway which I went to great lengths to get rid of (redrew the tile lines myself) and the lamps leading to the tower were impeccably placed. So my advice to other photographers, don't try to get the same angle and composition that you've seen other people do, you could shoot the Tokyo Tower from almost ANY angle and make it look amazing. Be willing to think outside the box a bit.
Boom. After 8 years of missed opportunities, being in the wrong location, being at work, being away, I finally have captured a full on shelf cloud. A monster storm with so many lightning strikes, a dozen captured with my Pluto trigger including this one. #sydneystorms D810 & 14-24mm with Pluto trigger.

...................................................................................................................................................................
. An antique must show porcelain age signs.
. It must originate either in the early republic, Qing or Ming dynasties, or earlier.
What is considered "early republic" period? We usually consider anything made after the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) during the 1910s or 20s as early republic, thus for us it ends 1930. Anything produced later is qualified as "vintage".
Millau-Cresseils - Aveyron - France
The Millau Viaduct (French: le Viaduc de Millau) is a cable-stayed bridge that spans the gorge valley of the River Tarn near Millau in southern France. It is the tallest bridge in the world, with one mast's summit at 343.0 metres (1,125.3 ft) above the base of the structure. In a Franco-British partnership, it was designed by the English architect Sir Norman Foster and French structural engineer Dr Michel Virlogeux, and as of May 2017 it is the twenty-second highest bridge deck in the world, being 270 metres (890 ft) between the road deck and the ground below.
The cost of construction was approximately € 394 million. It was built over three years, formally inaugurated on 14 December 2004, and opened to traffic two days later on 16 December. The bridge has been consistently ranked as one of the great engineering achievements of all time, and received the 2006 Outstanding Structure Award from the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering. My full time working career was in one place, Port Talbot Steel Works, in the 39 years I was there I worked for 4 different companies without ever changing jobs:-
British Steel Corporation (Nationalised)
BSC plc (Privatised)
Corus
Tata Steel
In the November of 2006 the steel plant that I worked in set a production record of 104,000 tonnes of liquid steel (100,000 tonnes of slab) made in 1 week. That meant the plant, on average, made 10 tonnes of steel every minute for 10,080 minutes.
