When I started creating an Epic Sunsets Sky Library, the first thing I did was shoot—A LOT.. After a few months of shooting, I selected and processed only the best and most epic skies. Then, I pulled a dozen images from my archives to test both the sky replacement process, as well as each individual sky itself, to make sure it fit into what ultimately became a final—and completely well rounded—collection. In this image, while Skylum Luminar made quick work of the sky, I had to mirror the reflection manually. Otherwise it was nearly a one button process. And that brings me to the next point. If you’ve read this far, you’ve also learned the answer is yes. The sky was replaced here. 😉
I know that sky replacement generates a lot of controversy and my previous post on Instagram from Tuesday proves that with a few hundred comments on the subject. I’d suggest reading some of the comments from that post. It got pretty epic. 😉
Now, most of us understand the importance of having an ace sky library to pull from, especially for tight deadlines and client driven work. My goal here is to provide the BEST sky library you can download. Period. I want people to have as many tools possible at their disposal to be able to achieve their creative vision.
Yes, I’ve been known to spend days, months, or even years to capture a single photo with the right conditions, and I’m very passionate about it. It’s something I love to do and in Photographing the World, we talk about trying over and over until you get the perfect shot. But, I also teach how to replace skies for those times when it’s necessary. I’m extremely transparent about my entire time blending process and as an educator, my goal is to teach as many techniques as possible so that no matter the situation, you’ll always have the tools necessary to complete the shot, job, project, or whatever it may be. Perspective blending, focus bracketing, time blending, luminosity masking, sky replacement - it’s my job to teach it. Whether you use any of it or not, that’s up to you. 😊

This Commemorative Air Force P-40 Warhawk is piloted by Sam Graves in the Kansas City Independence Day Air Show 2021 and is painted in the period colors of the famous AVG (American Volunteer Group) Flying Tigers WWII Ace David Lee “Tex” Hill. The Warhawk is a single-engined, single-seat, all-metal fighter and ground-attack aircraft that first flew in 1938. Almost 14,000 Warhawks were built before production ceased in November 1944. The aircraft was used by most Allied powers during World War II, and remained in frontline service until the end of the war. Between 1941 and 1944, the P-40 played a critical role with Allied air forces in North Africa, the Southwest Pacific, and China. It also had a significant role in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, Alaska and Italy. Based on war-time victory claims, over 200 Allied fighter pilots – from the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, the US and the Soviet Union – became aces flying the P-40.
In a random move, one of the engineers came up to me and gave me one of the limited edition EY face masks. I don't think i'll use it (mainly as it's probably been worn) but still a kind gesture. Also, he told this driver to slow down for the photo predicting it would turn out great. Well, he wasn't wrong.
Seen with an ace sky behind is ex Finglands gemini 1, 786. Better than my other photo of 786.
I am very happy with this landing gear : it's both sturdy and esthetic.
The Shinden was a huge inspiration for the "Innocent Aces/Sky Crawlers" creators. They upgraded the Shinden by adding a pair of contra-rotating propellers, a bubble top canopy, a pop-up air-air refuelling probe.
