I may not be on Flickr today as I'm feeling lousy. I'm hoping after getting an accupuncture treatment this afternoon I'll improve. Hope you all understand if I can't see your photos today but I'll try. I'll do my best to catch up as soon as I can.
Have a Happy Bokeh Wednesday!
Just heard on our local news that we have mountain lions on the loose right near our area. Over a hundred people have spotted them. Guess someone left their pets loose because the cat isn't native to our area.

Ten hours ago, we tramped along that track, weary from hauling quarter of our body weight up to this point in the hope of having it carry us off the hill this morning. Ten minutes ago, the sun rose over the horizon; the day was starting to look good. It was luxury to camp on a hill tht not only had flat pitchings but enough topsoil to tether my tent; more often I find myself cursing my lightweight 'accupuncture needle' pegs as they fail miserably against the fairly barren, rocky south Island ground.
In ten minutes, we should have really launched into the smooth morning air. Little did we know that the cloud below us would spread across most of Lake Hawea, leaving us in a sense stranded on the peak, our knees pondering walking all the way back down if a gap didnt appear. In the end, we waited it out, enjoyed the views and the ebbing and flowing of the clouds below us, before they eventually granted us safe passage back to the valley below.

Daddy Gao Gao, this photo is from 2010. Today he is our eldest panda bear at the San Diego Zoo. He is 27-28 years old and is enjoying life in retirement. He gets accupuncture for his arthritis, has the best cardiologist in town looking after his heart and the best keepers who look out for him all day long. He gets back massages, a tub full of his favorite pine shavings to nap in and all the bamboo he desires. All of this, of course, is well deserved for the father of 5 and the only naturally breeding panda male in the USA.
From a photo shoot of a local woman who creates hand-sewn plushies... with attitude. You can see more of her wonderful work here.
I shot this photo of an acupuncture model in a Chinatown shop window when wandering around San Fransisco on a rainy afternoon a couple of years ago. I used Snapseed to convert it to B&W and do a little cleanup, the hand coloring was done using Procreate. I’ve been exploring hand coloring and adding texture and/or graphic elements to photos using various apps for a while now, this is my most recent one.
Sally has spent many hours in this spot for weeks now--sitting up on her mattress with heating pad, pillows, etc.--as she navigates the possibilities for treating her severe neck pain. Ice, heat, steroid injection, physical therapy, accupuncture. It has been very discouraging, but things took a bit of a turn for the better today.
Otis has been her stalwart companion (he's just off "screen" here), and Cricket (the tabby) is the kind of cat that would slither into your skin with you if it was possible. I've seen up to 5 at a time keeping her company.
The title refers to several things: The painting on the wall (which I painted 25-30 years ago) is titled "Blue TV screen light". It is a phrase from a Joni Mitchel song (1971, A Case of You) and has a personal significance as well. It just so happened that the ipad had a blue screen when I took this. Sally was watching a movie about 2 people who got abandoned at sea, so I'm guessing there were a lot of blue scenes.

I'm so sorry if I miss your beautiful photos but since I can't sit very long at the computer it is impossible to visit everyones photostream. I hope you all understand. I hate not being able to be on Flickr long. True Flickr addict! Thanks again for all your support and well wishes. Have a nice Friday everyone.
P.S.
I got accupuncture yesterday but so far no difference. One thing I was shocked to find out is that I received a fracture of my femur during my hip replacement surgery but the surgeon never told Mark or me of this complication. He just said I had a couple bone fragments floating around from waiting so long to have the surgery which he removed. Liar! The hospital report explained how they repaired the fracture and did the hip replacement. My regular doctor was upset that I ended up with Foot Drop and bad nerve problems so she got the report on my whole surgery with exactly what was done faxed to her and than she gave me a copy. She was shocked that I didn't know about it. I am just so upset now about this whole thing. We checked out this surgeon before I went to him so I trusted him. Boy was I wrong. Sure was another upset to my day! Anyway I'm just not sure what to think but I know I plan to ask the surgeon why he didn't tell me. I can't sue him so there was no good reason why he didn't. I believe at this point you can't trust any doctor.
This is Zoe, my son's dog. But since my son has been away from home going to school, she is cared for by my husband and myself. She is a 12 year old munsterlander. Recently she became injured jumping out of my husband's truck and is barely able to walk. We are hoping she recovers. I have been taking her to the vet several times a week for accupuncture and laser treatments.
She enjoyed being out on the front lawn while I was gardening today.
My son says she enjoys being treated like a princess:)
A male alate or the winged reproductive form of the normally wingless ant group. The species is currently unknown, but we have it sent off to someone for identification. The back story is that this tiny (that is the smallest acupuncture needle you can get in the background) ant had emerged by the thousands from a dead tree and was being fed on by a flock of cedar waxwings. To complete the story we want to know about the ant's name. From St. Michael's, Maryland. Collected by the life long naturalist Jan Reese.

Weird weather has moved in. Thick ass grey-blue clouds with a few thin breaks. The sunshine will come out for a couple of minutes, just enough to tease me. It hasn't rained, at least since I woke up. But the air is wet and windy. Fuck, I want to go outside and play.
But I woke up with a wicked crick in my neck, going all the way down my right arm. I've massaged my neck with enough White Flower oil to make my eyes water...but it still hurts to move my head. I need a serious massage (and some accupuncture would rock!)
I was supposed to go on I guess kind of a date last night, but it didn't happen. I'm not that dissappointed.
But I'm fighting off feelings of lonliness today. I would love for someone to cook me breakfast.
I'm watching episodeds of Undeclared. I have an insane unexplainable crush on Seth Rogan.
[edited to add: Around 2:30 the sun did come out and stay out for a bit. And I got to go outside and play!]
Hello everyone,
The recovery is coming along well, I am walking about three miles a day all though yesterday I walked a little to far and was sore when I got home. It was the first sunny day we've had to walk in and stayed out longer than I should have. The sun felt wonderful. So I think I'm on track and doing well. I found after my last surgery that accupuncture really helped with the healing so I have started doing that again I hope it works as well, I'm going to a different person. I took this shot in my back yard I have a little fish pond out back,so when I go and sit by it I always take my camera I just never know what birds are going to show up. This Bullocks Oriole is back again this year and making him self at home with the hummingbird nectar. At least this year he is using the Joshua wood as a feeding platform, in years past he always tried sitting on the feeder and would spill all the nectar. I have a male and female Oriole that both think this nectar is just for them. I guess if they have a family I'll have to put out more feeders. Thanks again for the thoughts and prayers, they mean so much to me as do having you all as friends.
HBW a few hours early my friends.
I loved how these little itty bitty things looked when I saw them growing on the moss covered trees near the creek. I loved that I could get the water in the background, but wish it had come out more clearly in the background. That said, I still love this photo. It really does remind me of accupuncture needles!
I've been in bed with a hurt back and these 2 have been keeping me sweet, soft company. This helps a lot. Accupuncture is helping too.
Here's wishes for your weekend and hope that you have sweet company too.

I recently met a local woman who studied Traditional Chinese Medicine and also traditional accupuncture. Her methods seem identical to those I benefitted from so much while living in China. I found a a traditional earthenware Chinese medicine cooking pot in a thrift store a few months ago, (what a find !) Today got a bag of the herbs and minerals which my new healer formulated for me. The minerals and pieces of shells etc are boiling now and in a while I will add all the roots and herbs from the bag and simmer for another hour. I love seeing and smelling it bubbling on the stove. The heavy earthy smells take me back to Chinese medicine shops and my many kitchens where I boiled my medicine at night and drank a glass many mornings and evenings. In this photo it looks like the steam is coming from under the lid of the pot, but is really coming out of the stubby spout.
Timmy is settling in just fine! He's got his little ball tucked in his paw..he was drooling on it for a bit. Ahhh...the life!
Timmy suffers from arthritis in his rear legs...he can only walk a few feet before resting. Hopefully we can help him..even get him some accupuncture, I think that may help him!
He doesn't seem to care one second about any of the other cats, they don't phase him one bit, it's his world and they are just the scenery. I'm not sure how long he'll be with us, but we're going to make him as comfortable as we can!
About Acupuncture:
This is a simple demonstration of an acupuncture treatment using a single point, He Gu. This point, also known as Large Intestine 4 (LI4), is mainly used for pain relief and intestinal problems but can also be used for the treatment of head and throat inflammatory complaints, such as sore throats, eye pain and headaches.
He Gu is a forbidden point during pregnancy as it is known to cause miscarriages when strongly stimulated in conjunction with a separate point near the ankle, San Yin Chiao (Spleen 6.)
About the photo: (view the large version)
My goal was to attempt the HDR process and end with a ''realistic'' looking image rather than the vivid but fantastic images often associated with HDR, especially when architecture is the subject.
This was also my first attempt to combine macro photography with HDR. You can see that there is some blurring of the acupuncture needle in the last image. Acupuncture needles are really more akin to thin flexible wires that continued to oscillate during the 3 exposures I took for each picture. I also had some difficulty holding my hand perfectly still while manipulating the needle, which is evidenced by an artifact of my thumb in the fourth shot.
By the way, that's my own right hand treating my left. I was also the photographer, aided by my camera's EV bracketing and timer functions.
Overall I think the HDR images turned out well enough. I ended up with an acceptable exposure of my hands, the needles, and the wooden table underneath without the overall image looking to ''cartoony.''
I know you're probably wondering, and no, the treatment isn't painful. :)

Accupuncture for Erectile Dysfunction
And study published in the International Journal of Impotence Research in 2003, found that acupuncture worked in about two thirds of cases of psychogenic erectile dysfunction.
The researchers, led by Dr. Paul Engelhardt, took 22 men with an average age of 39 who reported psychogenic erectile dysfunction over the last two years.
They then split them into two groups.
The first group received acupuncture treatment specific to ED.
The second group received acupuncture treatment for headaches.
This second group was the placebo group, tracked just to see if they reacted to the acupuncture experience itself, rather than the ED specific treatment.
The researchers also did a crossover….
Where they took the non-responders from the placebo group and put them into the treatment group to see if these individuals would respond to the treatment (after not responding to the placebo).
The study was measured against all the major erectile functionality scores, including:
-Levels of sex hormones
-IIEF scores (a questionnaire to evaluate erectile functionality)
-Nocturnal penile tumescence testing (measuring nocturnal erections)
The researchers also measured the response rate to Viagra just to check that it wasn’t a physical thing, as opposed to psychogenic ED.
Each patient received up to 20 treatment sessions, depending on the response rate.
The researchers found that:
-Of those who underwent the placebo treatment, 91% reported no results.
-13 of 19 patients who received the actual treatment reported success.
-4 of 19 patients reported that it was moderately successful.
-2 of 19 patients saw no difference.
Therefore, the researchers concluded that yes, acupuncture works – and it is effective at treating ED in most people.

Info. on the cute Otter
Ranging over much of North America, the river otter survives anywhere with access to abundant prey and clean water. With a streamlined body, webbed feet, muscular tail, flexible body, and waterproof fur, otters are designed for swimming in search of fish, crayfish, and other aquatic creatures to eat. Otters den in a riverbank burrow, under a rock pile, in a thicket, or even in another animal’s home such as a beaver’s lodge. The river otter is famous for its playful antics – mud sliding, water sports and manipulating objects – which increases coordination and sharpens hunting skills.
An otter has 450,000 hairs per square inch.
While underwater, an otter’s ears and nostrils close up tight to keep out water.
An otter can dive as deep as 60 feet.
An otter can hold its breath underwater for eight minutes.

Once again I will not be on flickr much because of my physical problem. I will be going for accupuncture later this afternoon. It's certainly worth a try to ease up the discomfort I'm having in my ankle and foot. I want to thank you all for being such supportive friends. Hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Hugs!
The combination of 65 miles on the bike + multiple wheelbarrow trips hauling bark up and down my hill made my knee pretty sore this week. I went today for an accupuncture treatment. Six needles here are in my right arm, I had two in the right knee, and one in my left big toe. The sore knee is the left. I don't know how that all ties together, but it feels better this afternoon than it did this morning!
