The two hotels on the site use this standard unit replicated multiple times. The shape is supposedly inspired by the Mayan ruins and the overall effect was intended to be "a Mayan village".

As lhe election to the JNUSU draws near, it is increa.singl~ becoming clear to the student communi~y that the [04/09/2014 I outgoing AISA-Ied Union has nothing to show as the1r achievement. fl:ll that they have been dotng IS to try to take credit for a few routine administrative decisions, and AI SA has resorted to the most dishonest means to claim some such ihings as their own "achievements". The conversion of the SPS dormitory into Damodar Hostel is one example. This decision .
was announced at the Academic Council meeting of 25 April 2014, but the AISA-Ied Union kept it hidden from the students. .
Then they staged a sham protest in May so as to cause minimum inconvenience to the administration, following which they .
claimed that the decision to begin the conversion of the SPS Dorm to Damodar Hostel was the result of the protest in May! .
While the students are asking genuine questions regarding their own concerns and issues, the AISA leadership has adopted .
the language of the ruling classes, by trying to brush all such concerns under the carpet and deriding such questions as .
reflective of 'anti-AISAism'. The AISA leadership, which did not bother to raise the issue of hostels all these years adopted a .
feudal zamindari system vis-a-vis many students who took admission this year, by forcing them to come to annual School ·GBMs to vote for AISA-participation in debates was mostly discouraged; all pressure was exerted to come during the time of .
voting alone. It is to be noted with alarm that this happened even as the mobilisations in JNUSU protests declined steeply. .
But the students of JNU saw through the charades and trickery played out by the AISA and defeated the Convenor's Reports in SSS and SAA. The decadent feudal practices adopted by AISA could not stop the tide of overwhelming anger against the .
organisations that led the Unions of the recent past. The past few weeks also saw the rotten face of the AISA in its brazen .
violation of GSCASH rules and procedures which amounted to an undermining of the confidentiality of an enquiry process. .
AI SA resorted to this attack on GSCASH on the pretext that "students have a right to know", and AISA leaders went around the .
campus on a vicious slander campaign to "let the students know". The AISA's degeneration has made the students of JNU .
wonder what the difference between the functioning of AISA leaders and that of the feudal khap panchayats in our country is. .
Given the fact that recent AISA-Ied Unions have done nothing on core student demands, AISA's attempt in the recent days has been to make bogus claims about the "achievements" of its Unions in the early 1990s. One such claim has been regar?ing the .
restoration of deprivation points. The widely hailed deprivation point system of JNU was instituted in the early 1970s, and the .
most progressive elements of this Old Admission Policy (OAP) were brought about by militant struggles fought by SFI-Ied .
Unions. The result of this admission policy was that the representation of students from the deprived sections was more than .
the proportions mandated by the Constitution later on. The alarm of the ruling classes in the increased empowerment of the .
deprived sections led to the scrapping of the Old Admission Policy in 1983, when there was a brutal police crackdown on .
student activists in an attempt to break the back of student militancy, and the university was closed down sine die. In 1983, no .
students were admitted into the University. The OAP was replaced by the New Admission Policy (introduced with effect from .
1984), according to which the system of deprivation points was eliminated. The NAP eroded the national character of the .
University, and the students' movement suffered a serious setback. The infamous 'EC Norms' were introduced to restrict the .
rights of protest, and were repeatedly invoked in the 1980s to initiate disciplinary action against JNUSU office bearers. The .
partial restoration of the deprivation point system later on was in no way comparable to the progressive OAP. It is of .
significance, therefore, that the outgoing AISA-Ied JNUSU did not even bother to bring out a single pamphlet or poster on the .
non-fulfilment of the constitutionally mandated reservation for SC/ST/OBCs in several centres in the University this year. Again, this is not surprising given the fact that AISA was born in the crucible of the anti-reservation struggle, with the slogan "No Mandai, No Kamandal, lnquilab Zindabad". .
While the students are gearing up to give a strong political mandate to revive the JNU students' movement and to defend .
institutions like GSCASH, certain marginal groups have cobbled up a "front" in order to somehow halt their own continuous organisational decline. While this might, in the short run, address the immediate organisational requir~ments of these organisations (for instance in terms of finding sufficient number of candidates in the central panel and schools), the larger revisionist political agenda of these organisations needs to be clearly understood. The DSF, which leads this front, had taken upon itself the mantle of attacking the organised Left (something which the AlSA excels in) with some success-it had won the JNUSU elections in 2012. But its record in the Union was as abysmal as the previous AISA-Ied Union. Only time will tell .
whether or not the "common minimum programme" of these groups would be (like in the case of AISA) in defence of the JNU administration on crucial students issues. .

We slept in hammocks at Tikal... it was buggy, sweaty, and uncomfortable. I was so happy when 4 am rolled around and it was time to get up for the sunrise tour.
