Cliffe Fort in Kent overlooks the entrance to the River Thames. Completed in 1870, construction was plagued with problems to do with the poor quality of ground, and the final design was smaller, housing ten guns in a mix of casemates and open barbettes as opposed to the planned thirteen. The fort could also accommodate up to 300 soldiers. Housing guns within casemates offered the greatest protection, and the casemates were granite faced and were fitted with iron shutters. A bank and ditch also protected the formidable fort on the exposed sea side.
Under the casemate level were two parallel tunnels, containing the usual features associated with ammunition storage.The lower levels are now badly flooded, while the upper levels and gun casemates are accessible.
By 1899 the fort was armed with two 12.5" RMLs (Rifled Muzzle Loaders), five 11" RMLs, two 4.7" guns or 6" guns in the open Battery, four 4 pdr QF (Quick Fire) guns in new concrete emplacements on the roof and a Brennan Torpedo launching station.
By the Second World War the forts role in coastal defence had diminished and it was primarily a heavy anti-aircraft battery, armed primarily with two 4" BL guns.
The fort was sold in the 1950's and has laid in a worsening state since then. Partly due to subsidence and the ingress of water.
The guesthouse we stayed in - Erik the Red - comes highly recommended. The owner/manager Runar is very friendly and helpful, the rooms are comfortable, the food is excellent, and the house is full of beautiful artwork. And it's just across the road from the stunning Hallgrímskirkja, and only a few minutes walk from downtown Reykjavik 101.
Construction on Brean Down Battery finished in 1871, seven years after it started, and was one of a series of elaborate Palmerston Forts constructed around the coast of Great Britain to defend against French naval attack. The coastal artillery fort sits on a promontory of land known as Brean Down at the entrance to the River Severn, near Weston-Super-Mare. With a modest accommodation for 51 troops and initially armed with seven 7-inch Rifled Muzzle-Loading (RML) guns, the forts predominantly training based life ended in 1900 when a deliberate explosion was caused in the magazine containing 3 tons of powder. This caused severe damage to the fort, destroying two gun positions, damaging the main defensive wall and accommodation blocks.
The fort saw rearming in WW2, when two 6 inch breach loading guns were installed in new positions (still extant). A new Battery Observation Post (BOP) was constructed on the hill side to the rear of the fort, as well as search light emplacements been added. The foundations for a large number of new accommodation blocks also exist outside the 1871 fort walls. The site was active between December 1941 and April 1944.
The site is now maintained by the National Trust, and all structures, with the exception of the underground magazines, can be freely accessed.
