AC Cobra. I don't usually think of the Cobra as a wheelstander but this one picked up the fronts every time it ran. Bandimere Speedway, Colorado. October 2008.

One of the great things at Goodwood is that when the light fades, the paddocks remain open and therefore opportunities arise to shoot the cars under the glow of the electric lights for those willing to stick around and wait out the crowds leaving.

And this is one such shot, taken with the camera in full manual mode to enable control over the exposure whilst retaining some sharpness to the image. Before the event I challenged myself to get at least one shot under these tricky conditions that I was happy with, and I have come away from Goodwood with one or two that I think work ok.

I've not details on this particular car to hand, although a quick search of my photo stream shows I've not posted an image of this car before, which is strange given its attendance at most classic events.

Resplendent in red, this AC Cobra with its Le Mans Coupe roof was a real eye catcher in the paddock at Goodwood this year.

Assembly road shot of a trio of AC Cobra's, being led by the beautifully turned out 1962 car owned and raced by Rory Henderson and Darren Turner. I'm particularly fond of this AC Cobra, with its contrasting black roof and matching black numbering complimenting the slightly off white shade of the bodywork.

This year at the Goodwood Revival, one of the key features and highlights of the event was the bringing together of all 6 of the original Daytona Coupe's.

Given the garages used at the 73MM for the Le Mans cars, and dressed in period features, the cars were quite a spectacle in the early morning light.

Whilst I find the Daytona Coupe a little bit of an odd ball shape with that severe kamm tail, I understand the significance of bringing the cars together for the first time like this.

This particular car was number 5 in the production run (S/N CSX2602) and was raced at Daytona, Sebring, Monza, Spa, Nürburgring and LeMans in 1965, with a list of drivers the includes Phil Hill, Jack Sears and John Whitmore to name but three of them.

When this car raced at Le Mans in 1965, it ran with the Swiss red and white colours of the Scuderia Filipinetti team. The car blew its engine after 10 hours of the 24, and was subsequently repainted back to the Shelby colours and retired from racing.

And now for Best in Show Sports Category this fine, all original 1965 AC Cobra with the 289ci motor took honors in it's class!

There were 528 original 289 Cobras built by Shelby American, all fitted with the 289 cubic-inch Ford V8 engine and using a leaf-spring suspension design. While the total number of all original Cobras built was 998, the 289 models accounted for over half of that total before the introduction of the larger 427 models.

Details

Total Production: 528 Shelby 289 Cobras were produced from 1963 to 1965.

Engine: All 528 cars were equipped with the Ford 289 cubic-inch V8 engine.

Suspension: These 289 models used a leaf-spring suspension system, differentiating them from the later 427 models.

Chassis Numbers: These 289 Cobras are designated by CSX2000–CSX2602.

Context: The 289 Cobra was the initial version developed by Shelby American.

Distinguishing from 427 Cobras

427 Cobras: A total of 343 original Cobras were built with coil springs and the larger 427 cubic-inch V8 engine.

Semi-Competition (S/C) 427s: A portion of the 427 production, 31 cars, were designated as S/C models, which were detuned competition cars converted for street use.

On my way home I walked around the lower car park hoping to see some fungi, saw this beautiful car and stopped worrying about fungi!

This beauty is a 1963 renovated AC Cobra and is in immaculate condition. The owner told me she's left in the garage if it rains, but otherwise she's used whenever possible.

Thank you for your favourites. :O)

Static shot of the AC Cobra in the paddock at the Classic. Some of the cars were setup in the awnings of their owners (or teams) trucks, which isn't quite as photogenic as in the pit garages, but at least the light was a bit better out here.

Bokeh backdrop is our village street on a cold, sunny and very windy spring day. A good day for a drive!

I was going to take many more shots from the Mannum lookout, showing the fine river views, but one glance at the coming rain told me it was time to pack up and head for cover. Definitely not a day for the convertibles!

The AC Cobra, sold in the United States as the Shelby

Cobra and AC Shelby Cobra, is a sports car

manufactured by British company AC Cars, with a Ford

V8 engine. It was produced intermittently in both the

United Kingdom and later the United States since 1962.

A lovely mild but cloudy day was perfect for a spin in Ziggy, our AC Cobra roadster. Here, she is parked at Beachport on South Australia's Limestone coast, with a couple of hopeful silver gulls admiring the shiny car, and hoping its owners would throw them an unwanted chip from their lunch.

"I want the blue one."

"But what's wrong with the nice red Jag at the front of the queue?"

"I want the blue one."

"Or, maybe the nice shiny black Cobra. You can just reverse that one straight out."

"I want the blue one."

"There's the nice green Jag right down the front of the queue. That is ready to head straight out!"

"I want the blue one."

"How about the nice silver Mercedes SLK at the other end there?"

"I want the blue one."

"Sigh.....okay then, I'll move all the other cars so I can get the blue Maserati out for you."

"I've changed my mind. Can I have the silver BMW?"

"AAAAARGH!"

A shot of the set up used for this forced perspective street scene. One garden table. Two tripods. Two fake roads. Eight cars. And, just out of sight - one ever so slightly annoying person who cannot make her mind up!

.....with a rumbling V8 of course! It was another grey day in the Riverland, but made all the more enjoyable by driving through it with the roof down to catch all the sights, and sounds first hand.

A forced perspective shot of the Norev 1/18th scale die-cast model AC Cobra, with the real backdrop of Herrmann's Landing at Nildottie by the Murray River in South Australia.

It was actually a shame to have so much cloudy weather as this exact location is a part of the River Murray International Dark Sky Reserve which offers some amazingly dark skies to view the milky way in all its glory. Sadly the clouds stayed with us every night we were there. Maybe next time!

Two fine convertible touring cars, parked in the Mannum Caravan Park and ready to go for a day trip on a fine sunny day in South Australia's Riverland.

A forced perspective shot of "Molly and Ziggy" my two 1/18th scale models that accompanied us on the recent tour of the Riverland around Mannum on the Murray River is SA. The real background to the models is the caravan park and our holiday cabin is just out of view to the right. It was just a perfect winter day for touring!

The Beachport Jetty is the second longest jetty in South Australia at around 772 metres (2532 feet). It was once as long as 1.2km. Beachport has a good sized cray or lobster fishing fleet and they usually moor on the far side of the jetty, then run their catch into the boat ramp in small boats (tinnies - like the one at the ramp) to unload their cooler's contents onto the vans or trucks.

Beachport is just an hour's drive from our home in Mount Gambier. (A little quicker if we unleash all the horsepower in this little V8 AC Cobra roadster)

A forced perspective of the Norev 1/18th scale model AC Cobra, taken at Beachport on South Australia's Limestone Coast.

This local Port Augusta resident and his boy were looking a little surprised to see two AC Cobra roadsters sitting on the old wharf at the top of Spencer Gulf in South Australia. Port Augusta is a major cross-roads point in Australia and I often think of it as the beginning of the 'outback'. North takes you to Alice Springs and Darwin in the Northern Territory - some 2722km away. West will get you to Perth in Western Australia after about 2300km on the highway. South is back to South Australia's capital city, Adelaide - just over 300km down the road, and east will ultimately get you to Sydney in NSW after a distance of 1546km. Usual cars up here are of the SUV or four wheel drive type - not the low slung left hand drive Cobra roadsters.

Nice Cobra. Grant Park Pony Corral, Winnipeg, Manitoba.

While out touring around the Riverland, we did a little detour into the tiny town of Nildottie on the Murray river to check out the boat ramp and mooring area for houseboats. I believe it is officially called Herrmann's Landing. You can see the wonderful ochre coloured cliffs in the background that line the river here and over our shoulder behind us the river turns a big curve known as Big Bend with these tall, sheer cliffs forming the entire outer edge of the bend. Normally, the weather here is quite sunny, even in winter, but we had a succession of grey days. Still, it was fine weather for a convertible!

A forced perspective shot of my two favourite 1/18th scale diecast models that accompanied us on our trip through the Riverland, with the Nildottie boat ramp and the Murray River as the real backdrop.

Nildottie is only a tiny little settlement, but we call in here on every trip as there are a few local growers who sell bags of fresh Riverland oranges and other produce from their little roadside stalls. We always go home with a car load of goodies!

Our recent holiday demanded a couple of nice touring cars, and these two were the perfect choice. Not all our cars get nick-names. Ziggy was named for obvious reasons when you read the licence plate, and the Mercedes earnt the name Molly for no other reason than it started with the letter M! Here, they are parked alongside our rented holiday cabin (out of shot to the left) on the Murray River in Mannum, South Australia. The early morning sun added sparkle everywhere.

A forced perspective shot of two Norev 1/18th scale models - the AC Cobra and the Mercedes 190 SL - with the real riverside setting as the backdrop.

Two 1/18th scale die-cast model Cobras - any colour will do, black or white! Both original full size cars have big rumbling V8s. The black one is the original AC Cobra with the smaller engine, and the white one is the Shelby Cobra with what I believe was a 427 cubic inch V8.

As scale models go, both of these are very nice quality models. The white one is made by Solido, and the black one by Norev. Both are at the good value end of the market but have great details.

Ziggy and Molly parked by the Murray Princess at the Mary Ann reserve in Mannum, South Australia.

The reserve is newly refurbished after the devestating floods of 2023 with newly laid turf, and what seemed to be all new concrete kerbs and freshly laid bitumen here in the car park. For an idea of the flood level, the water got as high as the top of the posts on the rotunda on the right, so where I was standing, my head would have been several feet underwater.

The cars (Molly and Ziggy) are the 1955 Mercedes Benz 190 SL, and the 1961 AC Cobra. Both models by Norev.

Very grateful to the friendly locals here as the best place for my tripod mounted set up was right smack in the middle of the through lane in the car-park! Thankfully the traffic was light and the few motorists coming through were happy to slowly edge around me while I gestured all sorts of apologies and thanks! Even the lady and gent at the picnic table were reluctant to "spoil" my shot until I encouraged them to go ahead and sit there as it added some life to the shot.

The title does not refer to any names of the cars or their drivers, but it is the name of the charming little northern Tasmanian coastal town in the background and the wonderful rocky headland known as "The Nut".

The cars belong to my sister and myself (no prizes for guessing which is mine!).
