This cloisonné tray was in the beach house when Frank's parents bought it in the early 1940s. They purchased the house from a well-to-do minister and his wife who also had a large home in a tony district of Portland.

The motifs suggest the object was associated with card playing. I'm inclined to think it was brought out when the ladies came by to play bridge or canasta. What I do not know is its function. The shape is wrong for an ashtray, and its surface shows no traces of cigarette burns or ashes. It isn't large enough for snacks. Might it have held the pack of cards?

It's difficult to believe that the tray was made by human hands. It's that delicate.

"Cloisonné (French pronunciation: [klwazɔne]) is an ancient technique for decorating metalwork objects. In recent centuries, vitreous enamel has been used, and inlays of cut gemstones, glass and other materials were also used during older periods. The resulting objects can also be called cloisonné. The decoration is formed by first adding compartments (cloisons in French[1]) to the metal object by soldering or affixing silver or gold wires or thin strips placed on their edges. These remain visible in the finished piece, separating the different compartments of the enamel or inlays, which are often of several colors. Cloisonné enamel objects are worked on with enamel powder made into a paste, which then needs to be fired in a kiln."

Here are some photos of the Rapunzel Adventure doll and Cassandra 2-pack doll with the plush Maximus and Fidella dolls. Rapunzel is 10 inches tall, Cassandra is 10 1/4 inches tall, Maximus is 14 1/2 inches tall (to the top of his ears) while Fidella is 15 1/2 inches tall. As in the Tangled Before Ever After movie, I have Rapunzel riding Maximus and Cassandra riding Fidella (even though Maximus is Eugene's horse, and Fidella is Rapunzel's horse). Rapunzel is without her accessories (Pascal and frying pan), but Cassandra has her sword.

Description from Wikipedia:

A capo (short for capodastro, capo tasto or capotasto [kapoˈtasto], Italian for "head of fretboard"; Spanish: cejilla [θe.ˈxi.ʝa] or capodastro; French: capodastre; German: Kapodaster; Portuguese: capodastro, Serbo-Croatian: kapodaster; Greek: kapotasta) is a device used on the neck of a stringed (typically fretted) instrument to shorten the playable length of the strings, hence raising the pitch. It is a common tool for players of guitars, mandolins, mandolas, banjos, ukuleles and bouzoukis. The word derives from the Italian "capotasto" which means the nut of a stringed instrument. The earliest known use of the term "capotasto" is by Giovanni Battista Doni who, in his Annotazioni of 1640, uses it to describe the nut of a viola da gamba. The first patented capo was designed by James Ashborn of Wolcottville, Connecticut.

This one is manufactured by Shubb.
