The largest accessible cave in the western Harz offers interesting insights into animal and geological history. Thousands of years ago bears and wolves lived there. The cave in a forest area near the Herzberg district of Scharzfeld is a naturally formed cavity in 270 million year old Zechstein dolomite rock. The cave is the information center of the Harz Geopark and a natural and cultural monument.

From Cornell:

The sweet, lazy whistles of Eastern Meadowlarks waft over summer grasslands and farms in eastern North America. The birds themselves sing from fenceposts and telephone lines or stalk through the grasses, probing the ground for insects with their long, sharp bills. On the ground, their brown-and-black dappled upperparts camouflage the birds among dirt clods and dry grasses. But up on perches, they reveal bright-yellow underparts and a striking black chevron across the chest.

Lakeside Ranch Stormwater Treatment Area (STA)

Located in western Martin County, the Lakeside Ranch Stormwater Treatment Area plays a crucial role in the restoration of the Lake Okeechobee watershed by improving the quality of water flowing into the lake. The wetlands treats stormwater runoff from the Taylor Creek and Nubbin Slough basins to the north before that runoff enters Lake Okeechobee.

Approximately 2,700 acres of Lakeside Ranch is open to the public to enjoy hiking, bicycling, wildlife viewing or simply relaxing. The recreation area is surrounded by levees that are accessible to visitors on foot or on bicycle.

(wiki)

The fragrance tunnel is a work of art and a beam bridge by the Danish artist Ólafur Elíasson. It is located within the Autostadt in Wolfsburg in Lower Saxony. The fragrance tunnel was completed in 2000 as a decentralized project of the World Exposition Expo 2000 in Hanover. It was a project of the "EXPO Ostwestfalen-Lippe".

The fragrance tunnel is 15 meters long, the diameter is 4.5 meters, the total weight is approx. 19 tons.

It is intended to bring art, nature and technology to life. The installation deals primarily with physical phenomena in nature - such as light and water, movement and reflection.

As an accessible pedestrian bridge over a water surface, it should represent a designed space and a sculpture in one. The visitor is slowly surrounded by 2160 clay pots planted with flowers and suspended in a grid structure along their longitudinal axis. (wiki)

Surprised that no one has posted a shot of skin - the most easily accessible and very flexible object that can be photographed. This is a shot of a section of my palm. The logistics involved in getting this shot was quite tricky!

Lake O'Hara is one of the best-preserved places in the Canadian Rockies. It sits high in the Canadian Rockies at an elevation of 2,020m (6,627 feet). It is a beautiful sub-alpine glacial lake surrounded by the towering peaks of the Canadian Rockies. There are so many accessible trails starting right from the lake, hikers can easily spend days here without getting bored. But 11-kilometer to the lake in one way from parking lot, you can either take the shuttle or hike in. If you are lucky to reserve the shuttle, you can spare this 22-kilometer walking, save the energy to climb 10~20 kilometers mountains. Access to Lake O’Hara is strictly controlled with a reservation system, which means that it is never crowded.

Luckily got camping reservation for 3 days, it was pure nature without cell signals and electricity. Unfortunately, it was raining and cloudy most of time, plus the forest fire from Jasper, the sky was covered with foggy most of time. Here is the view of Lake O'Hara and adjacent Mary Lake, the crystal-clear lakes, hanging valleys, towering snow-capped mountains, and the pristine nature that shows the best Yoho National Park has to offer.

The place columnar igneous rock formations was discovered by tourists very few years ago.

The river has been the one with the most erosion powers in Iceland due to sand and rocks it has been moving from the origin north Vatnajökull glacier. Now the glacier melting water with the erosion powers has been taken away from the canyons below Kárahnjúkar Dam and most of the summer the river is almost clear water, and very much less water as well.

Then this place became much more ovious and more accessible.

These formations are to be found other places as well but these are amongst the largest and most complicated I know. The columnar are so high, they bend in ways I can mot imagine how the cooling powers have been working. One only get speechless and wonders, wonders, wonders

Depot of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen

Rotterdam (Netherlands)

It is the first building in the world that makes a museum’s entire collection public while also providing behind-the-scenes glimpses of how a museum works. Only eight percent of the collection could be displayed in the museum building, because the majority of the works were stored in facilities that were not accessible to the public. In the Depot of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen you can see the entire collection, arranged not by period or art movement but based on the objects’ climate requirements.

Its shape form resembles a giant flower pot. The architects chose this design to minimize the building's footprint, and the rooftop garden with trees continue the existing museum park on top of the building. The mirrored facade reflect the park and the city, creating a collective and integrated element within the urban landscape.

A stunning 314 (96 meter) waterfall that is easily accessible.

This is a composite of two photos. The tell is the difference between the water of the waterfall and the river.

Shot One is the waterfall and shot Two is the rest of the scene. With the wind blowing, all the longer waterfall shots caused the trees to sway and blur. Fortunately, I had the foresight to take both fast and longer exposures.

Pen-y-pass is a mountain pass in Snowdonia, Gwynedd, north-west Wales.

It is a popular location from which to walk up Snowdon, as three of the popular routes can be started here. Glyder Fawr, to the north, is also accessible from here.

The Broads are manmade waterways. Along with many other mills, Horsey Mill was built to drain the water to create more farmland. Here are some facts quoted from. www.nationaltrustscones.com/2019/10/horsey-windpump.html?m=1

“Here are some historical facts:

There has been a drainage mill on the site since the early 1700s

There are similar mills dotted all around this part of Norfolk - by draining the land using wind power, landowners could make more area available for farming

Drainage continues today - there's an electric pump doing all the work these days, but if it wasn't there then the area would be flooded:

The area used to be an island used for grazing or keeping horses (hence the name), with one access road that regularly flooded

The current windpump structure was built in 1912 on the foundations of the 19th century mill

Horsey Windpump was working until 1943 when it was struck by lightning

It was acquired by the National Trust and has been restored - its sails were set in motion for the first time in 76 years in May this year, which must have been a great moment

As with all mills, it's not the most accessible property - there are several floors and 61 steps to negotiate to get right to the top, most of which are very narrow (I can report that the young sconepals cared not a jot about this and were scampering up the stairs like squirrels)”

"Chouchou is a historic location in Second Life. Each of us has visited it at least once, and it enchanted us.

At the point of arrival, water, and an endless horizon seemingly infinite surround you.

When you activate music, it’s magic. The music is original to the authors of the location, more specifically: Juliet Heberle is a vocalist, while Arabesque Choch is a composer. The original music of Chouchou on the official website of the sim: chouchou.cc/music/.

Chouchou is known for its music and for the location of water that inspired many other sites, but it is right to remember that the sim hosts two other exciting spaces in the sky, Islamey, and Memento, accessible by a teleport located at the foot of the staircase that leads to the air.

Also, the authors of the location have made artistic videos of high level, and they are visible on their website at the following link: chouchou.cc/music/, under the heading “music videos.”

Today, reading on Facebook, I learned that Chouchou is in danger of closing down.

Many people are worried about this news because Chouchou is a symbol of Second Life, one of many, of course. However, one of the most significant. I hope that the Linden Lab will accept the invitation to preserve this place that for many Second Life users is a corner of peace, harmony, and therapy to the greyness of everyday life."

A storm settles in above Alaska's Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge.

One of the benefits of my trip to Alaska in the summer was to have a much longer autumn season, regarding foliage. This was taken on August 29th and the colors were already turning beautifully. A month earlier then when the fall foliage begins in WA. Nice!

"Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge is part of the world’s largest contiguous conservation unit, sharing a border with Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve and Kluane National Park in Canada. The Alaska Highway borders the refuge, providing unique opportunities to access the area.

Lying near the Canadian border, Tetlin is one of only two refuges in Alaska that are road accessible. It harbors a varied landscape, from rugged snowcapped peaks and glacially fed rivers to tundra, forest, and wetlands. The Refuge was established to conserve waterfowl, raptors and other migratory birds, furbearers, moose, and caribou—which lie in abundance within its borders.

Enjoy a wonderful Sunday!

the "Eichspitzturm" is the highest, freely accessible, observation tower in Germany. it is 53.2 meters (174,5407 ft) high in total.

On our only full day in Singapore we visited Gardens By The Bay for the second time. It really is a remarkable place and perhaps this dome is the piece de resistance; an artificial mountain created inside a glass dome that resembles the conditions you would find in a cloud forest.

The Cloud Forest is higher but slightly smaller of the two domes at 0.8 hectares (2.0 acres). It replicates the cool moist conditions found in tropical mountain regions between 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) and 3,000 metres (9,800 ft) above sea level, found in South-East Asia, Central- and South America. It features a 42-metre (138 ft) "Cloud Mountain", accessible by an elevator, and visitors are able to descend the mountain via a circular path where a 35-metre (115 ft) waterfall provides visitors with refreshing cool air.

The "Cloud Mountain" itself is an intricate structure completely clad in epiphytes such as orchids, ferns, peacock ferns, spike- and clubmosses, bromeliads and anthuriums. The design by Grant Associates was inspired by the Maiden Hair Fungus and consists of a number of levels, each with a different theme, including The Lost World, The Cavern, The Waterfall View, The Crystal Mountain, The Cloud Forest Gallery, The Cloud Forest Theatre and The Secret Garden.

This is the highest accessible viewpoint on Lummi Island, which you can reach on a 2 mile (very steep!) trail from the car park through the Baker Preserve.

Lummi Island lies at the southwest corner of Whatcom County, Washington, United States, between the mainland part of the county and offshore San Juan County. The Lummi Indian Reservation is situated on a peninsula east of the island, but it does not include Lummi Island. The island has a land area of 23.97 square kilometres (9.25 square miles) and had a population of 822 as of the 2000 census. The population nearly doubles in summer when second-home owners from Canada and the U.S. arrive for the summer months.

The island is accessible by a 20-car ferry, the Whatcom Chief, run by Whatcom County Public Works. It is a 6-minute passage from Gooseberry Point on the mainland to the island.

Stretching along the coastline the cliffs dip in and out to the many coves. Some are accessible and some you can only peer down into. September is a month that you could possibly hear Seal Pups calling far down below in one of the more secluded coves.

Cornwall's Coastal Path.

Quality Creek flows out of the hills near Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. There is a series of small waterfalls, with this being the most accessible. The hike to the falls is a very easy, enjoyable walk through a mixed spruce and pine forest where you may encounter a variety of birds and animals. Just remember to bring your bear spray along, just in case you come across grizzly or black bears or a cougar.

Lake Garda, Italy

There are countless jetties dotted all around Lake Garda... the only problem is, you need to be an Olympic Long Jumper or Pole Vaulter to access 99% of them. Most are either the property of the adjacent lakeside hotels or private residences. Just to make sure you are aware of this most are fenced off with padlocked gates and the few overzealous ones use a little barbed-wire to keep you off them. The long jump/pole vault option comes into effect for those jetties where the lakeside section has been removed to make them totally inaccessible.

This is the first jetty I found that I could actually walk onto without any restrictions but was a good half hour walk south of Malcesine town centre. Taken half an hour after my previous posting just as the sun was beginning to touch the mountain tops on the opposite side of the lake. Just to the left of the jetty can be seen the town of Limone Sul Garda and at the very top of the lake is Riva del Garda.

My first visit to this secluded cove which is only accessible at low tide. Found between Porthcurno and Lands End it's a bit of a trek to get to.... I've seen pictures of this beach with a lot of sand covering it but not this time...

Along the ring road

Antananarivo (Madagascar) - It doesn't look like it, but I'm on the "ring road" of Antananarivo.

In front of me, a rural spectacle in the greatest Malagasy tradition with these old rice fields. The capital is seeking to develop and Chinese promoters have already taken over many agricultural areas left fallow, waiting for them to be transformed into industrial zones.

The small hamlet at the bottom, consisting solely of farms, is only accessible by boat or on foot, along the earthen dykes which delimit the old rice fields.

Excerpt from news.livingrealty.com/neighbourhood-profile-streetsville/:

Initially unveiled in September of 2014, following a $3.1 million redevelopment and name change, the newly-revitalized Streetsville Village Square – located at the intersection of Main and Queen Streets – is the community’s favourite gathering place, and arguably its biggest draw for visitors and residents alike.

The City of Mississauga’s “Official Opening” for the new square took place on June 6, 2015, and was personally attended by Mayor Bonnie Crombie as well as Ward 11 Councillor George Carlson. Since then, the revitalized square has already hosted a number of seasonal events over the course of its first summer in business.

Indeed, the square’s transformation features a number of impressive upgrades, including a performance stage area, energy efficient lighting, sound systems and accessible features. For low-key gatherings, the space also now includes an abundance of public seating, complete with eye-catching yellow umbrellas atop many of the tables.

Renovations of the square also included upgrading the street surface with attractive brickwork, as well as a refurbishment and relocation of the Streetsville Cenotaph – a treasured local monument and a part of the community’s history since 1926.

While the Upper Peninsula has hundreds of waterfalls, the Lower Peninsula has only two, with Ocqueoc Falls being the most popular and accessible one south of the Mackinac Bridge. Ocqueoc Falls is the largest waterfall in Michigan's Lower Peninsula

La Vall de Núria

"The Valley of Núria"

is a south-opening valley coming down from the crest of the Pyrenees within the municipality of Queralbs, province of Girona, community of Catalonia, Spain.

The floor of the valley lies about 2,000 metres (6,600 ft) above sea level and is accessible from the south via a rack railway (the Vall de Núria Rack Railway) or by foot, and from France to the north by footpaths.

There are no roads to access the valley.

The place is historically notable for the 1931 drafting of the first Catalan Statute of Autonomy, in the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Núria.

Skógafoss waterfall has been my all-time favourite waterfalls in Iceland. It is one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland, with a drop of some 62 meters and a width of 25 meters.

Skógafoss is only one of the waterfalls in Skógá river, there are 20+ other smaller waterfalls in this river above Skógafoss.

When I first caught wind of this location back in 2010, in one of the movies I was watching, I really thought this is so exotic and must be so hard to get to, only to realise that in Iceland, some of these iconic landscapes are so easily accessible, that it is almost a shame not to visit them, at least once in your lifetime!

With almost 24 hours of daylight, Iceland is a delight to visit in summer months and this one was shot close to mid-night if you can believe it :)

Thanks for viewing and have a great week ahead everyone!

Watched National Geographic's "Into The Grand Canyon" (on disney plus) last night and was really taken with it. It’s about two journalists that walk the entire length of the canyon- not rim to rim, or floating down the river, but actually walking along the entire length of the landforms that make up the National Park. What they see is amazing- there are deeply remote spots in the canyon that are pure wilderness and don’t look like the rest of the canyon; they look more like Zion or even Antelope Canyon. The documentary also covers the story of the Navajo National fighting back against the proposed Escalade project that would build a tramway down from the rim to the confluence of the Colorado River. The CEO of the company said that his goal was to give everyone a “deep canyon experience” and to make it accessible. While I always crave accessibility for the National Parks… and while I always want to see as much as I can… this rubbed me the wrong way. Accessibility that robs the landscape of its purity and silence isn’t accessibility, it’s hubris. Sometimes, places are meant to be hard to get to. Everyone should be able to have an experience at the Grand Canyon but not at the expense of the canyon itself. That’ll probably mean that I never get to see the amazing vistas that this documentary showed me. And you know what? That’s fine. They’re protected. I know they’re out there. And protected. And that’s more important than me getting to see it.

This bunker is in fairly good condition, despite the passage of time, and is easily accessible.

Creake Abbey is just outside the village of North Creake, a few miles south of Burnham Market in Norfolk. The vast majority of our abbeys and monasteries were destroyed in the Dissolution by King Henry VIII in the mid-late 1530s. But Creake Abbey, founded by the Augustinians as a priory in the 12th century, had come to grief long before that. A fire swept through the abbey in 1483, damaging the church and several of the other buildings beyond repair.

Subsequently, although extensive rebuilding of the quire and presbytery had made good progress an outbreak of the 'sweating sickness' wiped out the monastic community in 1506, the abbot himself being the last to die. This was a mysterious and contagious disease that struck England and later continental Europe in a series of epidemics beginning in 1485. The disease was last recorded in 1551.

The abbey site and estate was given to Lady Margaret Beaufort in 1507, and ended up in the ownership of Christ's College, Cambridge. The abbey ruins are Grade I-listed and in the care of English Heritage. They are freely accessible to the public.

Here is a view down the accessible dock at the Buell Lake County Park, October 6, 2022. Disabled fisher persons have fishing stations that give them a good view of sunrise. Sometimes, the light can give the "ordinary" a crisp look, as what I thought was the case here. I thank Russ Burden's work on Outdoor Photography for giving me insight as to light and the ordinary. And, my friend Paul Sisul, for schooling us all on the composition of lines.

Thanks for the comments, faves and visits

This serene image captures a unique aspect of Hawaii's diverse tourist experiences - a sightseeing submarine excursion off the coast of Waikiki. The photograph, taken from the shore, offers a glimpse of the submarine adventure in progress.

In the distance, two vessels can be seen on the calm blue waters of the Pacific. The larger boat is the shuttle vessel that transports passengers to and from the shore. Beside it, partially submerged, is the submarine itself, its yellow top barely visible above the waterline. This submarine offers tourists a rare opportunity to explore Hawaii's underwater world without getting wet, providing close-up views of coral reefs, tropical fish, and maybe even sea turtles or sharks.

The ocean stretches to the horizon, its surface a mesmerizing palette of blue hues that blend seamlessly with the pale sky above. The lack of clouds suggests a perfect, sunny Hawaiian day ideal for underwater exploration.

On the right edge of the frame, a dark vertical line - a palm tree trunk - serves as a reminder that this oceanic scene is viewed from Hawaii's legendary beaches. This element adds depth to the composition and grounds the viewer on the shore, emphasizing the accessible yet adventurous nature of the submarine tour.

This image encapsulates the allure of Hawaii's tourism industry, showcasing how it combines natural beauty with unique experiences, allowing visitors to explore the islands' wonders both above and below the waves.

I went down to the city yesterday to check out the new Metro Stations. After spending a huge amount of money the 5 stations are now open with the trains running on a 10am - 5pm timetable while they ease the new stops into the timetable. The stations are large, orange decorated and clean. The platforms use automatic doors and floor to ceiling screens to stop customers from jumping onto the tracks as well as reducing the wind draft into the station (more energy efficient!). At the moment the helpful Metro staff are rostered on to help customers navigate the new system and linkages to the old Metro stations Flinders Street and Melbourne Central.

While the platforms have these orange trims, the entrances to the stations are of differing colours and structures.

The State Library Station is 43m or so underground with steep escalators. bigbuild.vic.gov.au/use-metro-tunnel/stations and transport.vic.gov.au/news-and-resources/projects/metro-tu...

Etwa 105 Meter ragt die Seebrücke ins Meer. Leider baufällig und nicht mehr zu betreten. Für die Vögel, Möwen und Kormorane aber ein idealer Landeplatz.

The Sassnitz pier

The pier protrudes about 105 meters into the sea. Unfortunately it is dilapidated and no longer accessible. An ideal landing place for birds, seagulls and cormorants.

A classic photo spot during the early years of my time in Illinois. In later years this wasn't as accessible anymore.

Had spotted this abandoned silo a few weeks ago, and kept it in mind to come back.. well, I forgot about it... until today. Was thinking about what to shoot for today and suddenly remembered about it.

This silo used to be part of the state penitentiary that was closed a few years ago in a city nearby.. The penitentiary is always guarded, but this silo sits outside the property, hence was easily accessible... very tight space once you get in.. took a few shots from different POVs and called it a day before somebody noticed us.

Excerpt from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Itsukushima_Shrine:

Itsukushima Shrine (厳島神社, Itsukushima-jinja) is a Shinto shrine on the island of Itsukushima (popularly known as Miyajima), best known for its "floating" torii. It is in the city of Hatsukaichi, in Hiroshima Prefecture in Japan, accessible from the mainland by ferry at Miyajimaguchi Station. The shrine complex is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Japanese government has designated several buildings and possessions as National Treasures.

The Itsukushima shrine is one of Japan's most popular tourist attractions. It is most famous for its dramatic gate, or torii on the outskirts of the shrine, the sacred peaks of Mount Misen, extensive forests, and its ocean view. The shrine complex itself consists of two main buildings: the Honsha shrine and the Sessha Marodo-jinja, as well as 17 other different buildings and structures that help to distinguish it.

Excerpt from itsukushimajinja.jp/en/route.html:

East Corridor: The corridors are 3.9 meters wide and about 270 meteres long. The distance between the pillars is about 2.4 meters. There are eight floorboards between the pillars and small spaces between the floorboards.

Gaia and I were on what I called Madrone Quest today. We went to Washington to see if we could capture the elusive Madrone (or Madrona) tree on some 8x10 sheet film. I have a show coming up at the Madrona Cafe in Lakebay, Washington, and I wanted some of the namesake trees on film. I have one such picture in the show, which I took about 20 years ago on Vancouver Island, but I wanted more for future shows. Well, Madrone Quest failed. They grow on the edges of cliffs, and we didn't have the time to go far enough north to find an accessible spot. One needs both a pretty tree and a pretty background, and the highway does not suffice for the latter. We did some exploring on SR 4, getting as far as Cathlamet, and did a pretty drive on Puget Island before heading back toward Longview, and then home.
