Bald Eagles | Breeding
Let me begin with this: Whenever I get a chance, I do make a point of interacting with people I meet on nature trails. It has both cost me some irreplaceable wildlife shots but more often rewarded me with great conversations, new friendships and many volunteered tips on interesting and accessible wildlife sightings and locations. The latter, is at the origin of this photo essay in that a spur-of-the-moment encounter with a young Eastern Ontario family led to an invitation to photograph Bald Eagles nesting in a large tree located a fair distance in their farm field. The nest was a substantial, several year-old structure, principally built with wood sticks and erected high in the pine tree. I made several trips to the location which will remain undisclosed but wish to thank the property owners for this exquisite opportunity.
On my first visit, 28 April, I wasn’t able to determine whether there were any eaglets at the site for the nest was too elevated. However, there was a pair mature Bald Eagles at or near the nesting tree as well as a couple of what appeared to be first-year Bald Eagles flying around, based on the state of their plumage. The immature eagles lingered around, but were not necessarily welcome by the nesting parents. At times, other birds of prey flew in the area, such as the red-tailed hawk shown herein, but was pushed away following mid-air altercations. Also, observed a Northern Harrier causing concern to the eagles.
Because the nesting site was at the end of an open field, the pair of adult eagles would always come to check me out as soon as I got out of my car, half a kilometer away from the nesting tree. They would circle me for awhile and then either return to perch in the vicinity of the nest or leaving to fish from a nearby body of water.
On my second visit on 03 May, I had my first sighting on a single eaglet in the nest. Then on 16 May, three nestlings could be identified in the nest, although it was not possible to take a photo of the siblings without one or two being obstructed from view by tree limbs or the rim of the nest. On the 24 May and 10 June, the three eaglets appeared to be healthy and growing well, signaling that the adults were able to get the youngsters ample of food. Even as nestlings, the eaglets never look cute but always fearsome. On June 10, some of the eaglets were observed standing on the very edge of the nest or even perched on tree limbs above and slightly offset from the nest. My last visit was on June 24 in very inclement weather with abundant driving rain. I did not observe any activity in or around the nest and I can’t imagine the eaglets were able to all hide at the bottom of the nest. I presumed they had fledged.
Following are individual and composite pictures of the adult parents taken during my visits, each limited to a few minutes to document the evolution of the nestlings while avoiding stressing the birds even though I had to shoot quite a distance from the nest due to its elevation.

Feliz Paseos Park features a universally accessible trail system enhanced with interpretive signs, and includes a parking area and a small plaza with a large ramada with two ADA accessible family restrooms. The park is located on a 50-acre parcel of lush desert near the northeast corner of Gates Pass Road and Camino de Oeste, just minutes west of downtown Tucson making access relatively easy. The park is intended for use by everyone, regardless of ability.
Tyrone loves growing his own food! Before the pandemic, he was a Home Veg. Garden Program volunteer and has built many garden beds and done many installations at people's homes. He was very eager to help with his installation as well. We built this table top garden bed according to the size specifications he gave us. He requested herb seedlings and we also gave him a couple of pots with marigolds to attract pollinators.
