Yesterday, we had a bright, sunny morning, which was probably the reason this young owl kept its eyes shut to mere slits much of the time that I watched it. Two other owls were hunting in the same general area where I found this one. However, I would have needed a super telephoto lens to get acceptable shots of either of them. It was enough to see three Snowy Owls in the same morning. This winter has been very generous with its gifts and I am deeply grateful.

Where else could you see wild horses playing freely? Iceland, that is. These 2 horses were in a band of wild horses that were roaming the ocean side of Vestrahorn, the volcano, black sands. We came here for some landscape photos, but came across these horses, and I didn't have any long lenses with me except the 70-200mm F4. Since these, I assumed, were wild horses, I didn't want to venture too closely, so the best I could do was to stay far and took their environmental portraits.

At the end of some shots of these horses, I took a series of photo's of the background, and merged them together into this pano.

Lens: Nikon 70-200mm VR F4, F8, ISO 2000, Focal 185mm, Shutter speed 1/30 secs (notice..this is very slow shutter speed for this type of moving objects), and hand-held. The VR and the objects being far away, gave me the acceptable sharpness.

Etymology

1670s, figuratively using goose/gander for women and men, and literally meaning that the same sauce applies equally well to cooked goose, regardless of sex. Early forms include “as deep drinketh the goose as the gander” (1562) and similar “As well for the coowe calfe as for the bull” (1549).

Proverb

what's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander

A simple prepositional change to the old expression seemed appropriate. Spotted the shadow of this gal (use of this word is still politically acceptable for deer, dear) out the window in almost complete darkness, snuck out the door, and snapped a few before she took off. Even though I was as unobtrusive and quiet as I could be, she had already spotted me and in moments was gone. Not exactly the cover of National Geographic, but an unexpected result nonetheless.

The BUDS are making sure I am within what is legally acceptable for this great undertaking.... the infamous TWo FiNGER PushUP of DOOM!!!! Thank you, BUDS!

A photo for Smile on Saturday.

This is a previously posted photo; I can't get out to get a new shot because of my health which keeps me indoors most of the time. I hope this is acceptable. -Lana

Taken last year but have only just managed to make it look slightly more acceptable. I wish I knew how to take long exposure shots for that milky smooth look on the water, I do have A ND filter but haven't quite got to grips on how to use it yet!!

I can't actually remember now if this what shot through a fence or a bench, so I am posting it early for Fence Friday and hope it's acceptable!

It was very windy, though spend long time very few shots got acceptable, either was not focused well or were blank :( but surely due to strong wind this fritillary tolerated my close presence :)

Happy Macro Mondays!

Geysir mirrored in Blesi hot spring, Iceland.

I had this shot on my mind already for a quite a while, and hoped that conditions would allow this time to capture an acceptable reflection: A moment without too much wind, no steam drifting in from the pool next to it, and the erupting geysir all at the same time. Furthermore the extreme low camera position didn't make it easier. Luckily this geysir erupts every few minutes. It took quite a while and several attempts, but finally, I think I got an acceptable result.

A earlier post of the area including Blesi hot spring can be seen here: flic.kr/p/nrfMSP

It was a dark and dreary rainy day, which is terrible for the photography that I like to do, but I did find this male dickcissel sitting out in the open beside a grassland where there was barely acceptable light.

Another acceptable pic from the famous Howard Shoot, set up by Howard Browsky for myself and another friend of his at the National Raptor Centre in Port Dover, Ontario.

Sharpened and cleaned up this jpeg image in Topaz Denoise in Standard mode, exported the file in DNG format, then applied basic camera tone and colour adjustments in PS, along with a minor bit of smudging to smoothen out a few sharpen artefacts, as well some exaggerated contour lines.

I then saved the original as 3 separate bracketed exposure images (-0.5, 0, and +0.5) in Lr and fused these three exposures in Photomatix. Went back to Lr for more colour, tone, contrast, and sharpen tweaking before going back to PS to clone out some distracting elements, while cloning in some rearranged elements of the flora in the background (all from within the original image).

Finally, I went back to Lr for some vignetting and burning around the backdrop in order to add emphasis to the hawk.

Photomatix, combined with Topaz Denoise and exporting the jpeg from Denoise as a DNG for raw editing in PS appears to have been a Successful workflow combination.

This shot of a Common Tern is not completely sharp but I think just about acceptable. Taken at the North Cave Wetlands in East Yorkshire. They are glorious birds to watch but not the easiest to photograph . A large crop on this image

It was another challenging theme for me.

About 10 out of 200 photos show acceptable results.

Thanks for all your faves and comments everyone!

I really appreciate them!

As the drizzle picks up and the day gets darker, I've bumped the ISO past acceptable limits...but I still like this one. Illinois Terminal heritage SD70ACe 1072 pulls NS train 223 east past the vintage Southern signal bridges at A&S Junction in Alorton, IL, one of my favorite spots in the East St. Louis area.

Getting anything but a standard wide cab GE leader on the Highline can be challenging but the scenery still warrants a visit. Here the first eastbound stacker of the day passes Grizzly siding and leaves East Glacier on a frosty sub-zero morning.

Slowly moving into the Weekend...grabbed this capture and revisited post processing style..hope you find this acceptable..stay safe and have a good Weekend ahead! Cheers, Udo

Depth of field is the distance between the closest and farthest objects in a photo that appears acceptably sharp. Now your camera can only focus sharply at one point. But the transition from sharp to unsharp is gradual, and the term ‘acceptably sharp’ is a loose one! Without getting too technical, how you will be viewing the image, and at what size you will be looking at it are factors that contribute to how acceptably sharp an image is. It also depends on how good your vision is!

Scientifically, it is based on something called the circle of confusion. This involves more physics than I’m going to get into here! Spencer talks about it in his article “Hyperfocal Distance Explained.” So check that out for more of the technical details if you are so inclined.

In these two sketches, I have tried to illustrate what is meant by a narrow and large DoF. In a photograph with a narrow DoF, only a small slice of the image is in focus. Conversely, with a large DoF, much more of the scene is sharp.

I apologise for taking down the surfer shot yesterday but I noticed a problem with the white balance that at first I thought acceptable but then could not leave it. Tried to just quickly alter cyans but the new upload was not acceptable to me. I shall reprocess it from scratch but for now here is one from one of my very favourite places and I have many shots going back years. This was taken on the 25/06/2018 the two shot pano knocked of the date. It to me is so representative of that beautiful place that I love......thought the date went but it hasn't dohh....

Amtrak 20 blasts through the town of Central, SC with an acceptable duo on the head.

I am not a portrait photographer and when I do make portraits I have to use all kinds of tricks to get a somewhat acceptable result. No photo studio, but a converted kitchen, no lighting lamps, just daylight, no professional background set, but a paper tablecloth, no professional model, but a granddaughter who makes it all worthwhile! ;o)

We finally had acceptable temperatures yesterday and as it was sunny too Cleo could spend several hours in the garden. She watched me (as I was working in the garden) and Tofu (as he did what he always does) and being outside definitely improved her mood.

If imitation is a form of flattery, I hope my attempts to imitate are acceptable to our friend Patricia Meyer. These are all from Niagara County.

This is how we usually see them. From the sparrow's point of view. this is a perfectly acceptable and "naturai" perch.

I spent a few weeks trying to win the trust of this handsome whitetail doe in hopes of getting an acceptable close up!

So, it's 7am on a Sunday morning, everyone is fast asleep, what to do?

The sensible thing would be to go back to sleep but the obvious answer is to go stand in a river for a couple of hours.....

This Barn Owl has been delighting birders and photographers in the Atlanta area as it forages over grassy fields around sunrise and sunset. I hope all the attention doesn't ultimately drive it away from its current feeding grounds.

In this view you can see the heart-shaped face. I went back yesterday and was hoping for better face on views at closer range but despite the excellent show the owl gave it didn't make a close enough face on pass in good enough light to greatly improve what I got the first visit. So this is another image from my first visit. There are generally quite a few photographers and/or birders there-up to 3 dozen or more some mornings-so it is likely best for the owl if everyone is observing from the same area and for the most part most folks have been considerate enough.

The necessary vantage point is into the rising sun so the window of acceptable light is rather narrow unless you get a bright overcast morning light and such a morning must coincide with your own availablity to get there for it and of course there is the unknown each time of how long the owl forages any morning or if it shows up at all!!! In the evenings the owl generally appears when the light is already marginal at best.

This is from last year... second attempt on the same image, where I've combined 4 shots and made something acceptable...different colour scheme this time

To achieve an acceptable image in the case of very high dynamic range, where the owl’s nesting hole was fully shaded and the Sycamore bark was in full sunlight, I set my ISO and took two images at different speeds (lower speed to expose the owl correctly and higher speed for the bark). Photoshop elements was used to combine the two.

I'm in doubt about the new "Sky Replacement" feature in Photoshop 2021. Is it cheating or is it an acceptable creative feature?

But its fun.............................

This is a combination of a crystal glass bowl full of colourful glass beads illuminated from below. A glass containing water and cooking oil was placed on top of the glass beads with the camera lens positioned inside the glass to take a 1:1 macro shot.

** As ever dear Admin/Mods CrAzY Tuesday group: If this photo is not remotely acceptable even if viewed from a very high altitude with the wind blowing from the North I fully and completely agree not to enter into any complaint whatsoever either written, verbal, in-person, in-dreams or in any way that might result in causing unwanted stress to yourselves or family pets :)

The Magnolia Warbler is a handsome and familiar warbler of the northern forests. Though it often forages conspicuously and close to the ground, we have relatively scant information on its nesting behavior.

(What is most interesting about this image, is that I used the 2x MIII converter on a R6. For the first time, I now am able to use that converted with confidence, as I always seemed to get not that sharp images on the DSLR's. I guess, for 1000mm, this turned out acceptably sharp.)
