Composite photo of the inflorescences of the four accepted varieties of Castilleja minor, a widespread species of western North America. Unlike many traits in Castilleja species, the corolla differences between these forms are remarkably consistent. The ranges of three of the varieties are essentially parapatric, except for the rare var. spiralis, the range of which is entirely included within that of var. stenantha. From left to right:
var. stenantha (long corolla beak and pale lower corolla lip, acute to acuminate bract tips; common in habitat west of the Sierra crest in California and adjacent N Baja California).
var. spiralis (long corolla beak and reddish lower corolla lip, narrowly rounded to spatulate-rounded bract tips; rare and scattered on extremely serpentine substrates in Lake/Napa, Tuolumne, and Marin counties in west-central California).
var. exilis (short corolla beak and pale lower corolla lip, acute to acuminate bract tips; fairly common in habitat in far eastern California and throughout the Great Basin and eastern Pacific NW). Usually in saline wetlands. This form was long-recognized as a full species, C. exilis, but there are few consistent characters to separate it, except for those mentioned here as distinguishing the variety.
var. minor (short corolla beak and reddish lower corolla lip, acute to acuminate bract tips; uncommon in habitat in the SE quadrant of Arizona and adjacent NM and southward into the northern tiers of Sonora and Chihuahua, Mexico). Usually in mountain and foothill seeps and stream margins. This form usually has a decidedly "lithe" growth form, contrasting with the form of var. exilis, which is more "hefty", using non-botanical terms to illustrate the visual impression of the plants.
Castilleja minor was described by Asa Gray in 1858 from collections near the U.S./Mexico border. Gray named it "C. affinis var. minor" at that time, but in 1876, he recognized its unique characters and elevated it to full species status. Alice Eastwood effectively lectotypified C. minor with a collection from Grant Co., NM in her great 1909 revision of the Castilleja species of Mexico and Central America, as part of her studies in that time period at the Gray Herbarium at Harvard. That paper remains the most recent comprehensive revision of the Castillejas of that region, which I'm working to update in the nearish future. Alice's treatment was remarkably accurate, considering the state of knowledge at the time, and many of the new species she described therein are still accepted today.

An absolutely beautiful realisation that both of your hypothesis tests prove to be significant.
