Sonja Baskerville accepts the Secretarial Excellence award on behalf of David M. Hesse, award recipient, who could not be at the awards event.
David M. Hesse, on his own initiative, developed innovative computer software for transmission tower design. The software program, called the Advanced Tower Analysis and Design System, has already saved the Bonneville Power Administration over $18 million. These savings will continue to accrue with each improved tower that is constructed. The new stronger, lighter towers developed with Mr. Hesse's software use less steel and cost up to 25 percent less than previous tower designs. Their greater strength improves reliability yet requires fewer towers per circuit-mile, thereby reducing the environmental impact of transmission line construction. Engineers using Mr. Hesse's program can, in one day, evaluate a variety of different configurations. Without the software weeks or months were required to evaluate just one configuration. Not only is the Bonneville Power Administration a beneficiary of these savings; the agency has shared this time and money-saving software with utilities across the nation and the world, significantly expanding its benefits.

Serpentine Gallery Pavillion 2017, text from website copyright of serpentinegalleries.org
Summary
Diébédo Francis Kéré, the award-winning architect from Gando, Burkina Faso, was commissioned to design the Serpentine Pavilion 2017, responding to the brief with a bold, innovative structure that brings his characteristic sense of light and life to the lawns of Kensington Gardens.
Kéré, who leads the Berlin-based practice Kéré Architecture, is the seventeenth architect to accept the Serpentine Galleries’ invitation to design a temporary Pavilion in its grounds. Since its launch in 2000, this annual commission of an international architect to build his or her first structure in London at the time of invitation has become one of the most anticipated events in the global cultural calendar and a leading visitor attraction during London’s summer season. Serpentine Artistic Director Hans Ulrich Obrist and CEO Yana Peel made their selection of the architect, with advisors David Adjaye and Richard Rogers.
Inspired by the tree that serves as a central meeting point for life in his home town of Gando, Francis Kéré has designed a responsive Pavilion that seeks to connect its visitors to nature – and each other. An expansive roof, supported by a central steel framework, mimics a tree’s canopy, allowing air to circulate freely while offering shelter against London rain and summer heat.
Kéré has positively embraced British climate in his design, creating a structure that engages with the ever-changing London weather in creative ways. The Pavilion has four separate entry points with an open air courtyard in the centre, where visitors can sit and relax during sunny days. In the case of rain, an oculus funnels any water that collects on the roof into a spectacular waterfall effect, before it is evacuated through a drainage system in the floor for later use in irrigating the park. Both the roof and wall system are made from wood. By day, they act as solar shading, creating pools of dappled shadows. By night, the walls become a source of illumination as small perforations twinkle with the movement and activity from inside.
As an architect, Kéré is committed to socially engaged and ecological design in his practice, as evidenced by his award-winning primary school in Burkina Faso, pioneering solo museum shows in Munich and Philadelphia.
Serpentine Pavilion Architect's Statement:
The proposed design for the 2017 Serpentine Pavilion is conceived as a micro cosmos – a community structure within Kensington Gardens that fuses cultural references of my home country Burkina Faso with experimental construction techniques. My experience of growing up in a remote desert village has instilled a strong awareness of the social, sustainable, and cultural implications of design. I believe that architecture has the power to, surprise, unite, and inspire all while mediating important aspects such as community, ecology and economy.
In Burkina Faso, the tree is a place where people gather together, where everyday activities play out under the shade of its branches. My design for the Serpentine Pavilion has a great over-hanging roof canopy made of steel and a transparent skin covering the structure, which allows sunlight to enter the space while also protecting it from the rain. Wooden shading elements line the underside of the roof to create a dynamic shadow effect on the interior spaces. This combination of features promotes a sense of freedom and community; like the shade of the tree branches, the Pavilion becomes a place where people can gather and share their daily experiences.
Fundamental to my architecture is a sense of openness. In the Pavilion this is achieved by the wall system, which is comprised of prefabricated wooden blocks assembled into triangular modules with slight gaps, or apertures, between them. This gives a lightness and transparency to the building enclosure. The composition of the curved walls is split into four elements, creating four different access points to the Pavilion. Detached from the roof canopy, these elements allow air to circulate freely throughout.
At the centre of the Pavilion is a large opening in the canopy, creating an immediate connection to nature. In times of rain, the roof becomes a funnel channelling water into the heart of the structure. This rain collection acts symbolically, highlighting water as a fundamental resource for human survival and prosperity.
In the evening, the canopy becomes a source of illumination. Wall perforations will give glimpses of movement and activity inside the pavilion to those outside. In my home village of Gando (Burkina Faso), it is always easy to locate a celebration at night by climbing to higher ground and searching for the source of light in the surrounding darkness. This small light becomes larger as more and more people arrive to join the event. In this way the Pavilion will become a beacon of light, a symbol of storytelling and togetherness.

Joe contemplates the Cotswold head I used to use on this body.
It is a pretty darned good knock-off, these guys really come as close as you probably can come without risking getting sued into oblivion by Hasbro, but I'm happy to have finally replaced it with a proper vintage head.
I customized the Cots head further by painting on a scar and repainting the lips to make them stand out a bit more (I think I overdid it a bit, and am not really happy with how those lips came out) and painted over the "shine" in his eyes to make him look more vintage).
This head is now available for sale or for trade! Contact me if you are interested!

Pregnant Mule Deer Doe
I’ve seen a lot of various looks from Mule Deer before. Few this precious as from this doe. It is obvious her look was annoyance with me. I’m patient though and tend to wait out such attitude. It wasn’t long before she was back grazing with the group around her exhibiting normal deer behavior. They more or less are accepting my Black Ford Raptor as just another Big Smelly Black Angus moving across the Prairie. I seldom scare the local wildlife or push them intentionally. I have found that if you pressure wildlife, they will run from you next time you see them. So for me to get really close to the wild inhabitants of Wyotana, I have to be very respectful of personal space.
Most of the Does are VERY pregnant this time of year. The wheel of life is turning seemingly with a quickening in the late spring. The quantity of newborns born at one time assures a new generations. Deer have a few predators up here but human’s riding their machinations account for the majority of deer fatalities. In the two decades I’ve driven in deer/pronghorn country, only a few over a dozen deer have been “hit” by our families cars. Less than one a year average. We have never filed an insurance claim from a deer impact.
Having discovered early on putting a custom made front bumper / crash bar/ deer bumper on any vehicle that will support it is necessary. Cars… no reason to put a 500+ pound chunk of steel on a Toyota lol. The pickups and SUV’s that we own are all graced with a significant steel front end. Hitting a deer at 60 mph or so is no fun certainly for the driver OR the deer. Bright bright bright headlights help too. Being able to see a 1300 pound Black Angus at night on a gravel road is a good thing if you are traveling. Cleaning a deer you hit at speed off your vehicle takes a while. Trust me on this. My son lost a passenger Mirror from swishing past a deer. They do hit you in the side sometimes ☺️

Kaiserslautern garrison welcomes new commander
By Rick Scavetta, U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern
KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany – Lt. Col. Lars Zetterstrom grabbed hold of U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern’s guidon Friday, accepting responsibility to provide support and services to thousands of U.S. Soldiers, civilians and family members in the Kaiserslautern area.
Zetterstrom took command of the garrison during a ceremony held at Armtstrong’s Club on Vogelweh Housing Area. Dozens of U.S. and German military officials and civilians attended the event. Zetterstrom is looking forward to his new job, he said.
“I have been thoroughly impressed with the quality and professionalism of the garrison staff,” Zetterstrom said. “I look forward to working with the outstanding Soldiers and civilians of the garrison headquarters.”
The highlight of the ceremony was the traditional passing of the unit colors. Throughout history, the guidon has showed the commander is present and it served as a rally point for troops on the battlefield. Soldiers from U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern’s Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment served as color bearers and color guards.
During the ceremony, both incoming and outgoing commanders offered remarks.
Lt. Col. Kevin Hutchison, who now heads to Fort Sill, Okla., for his next assignment, took time to thank garrison staff and other leaders in the Kaiserslautern Military Community. He also spoke in German to thank local officials for supporting the command. His time in command will not be forgotten, he said.
“I will miss the job, the camaraderie and the great team that we have in the Kaiserslautern garrison,” Hutchison said.
Commanding a garrison in Kaiserslautern in unique, due to its collocation with a large U.S. Air Force contingent, said Col. William Butcher, commander of United States Army Garrison Baden-Württemberg. The Kaiserslautern garrison supports dozens of tenant units, to include the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Stars and Stripes and the 357th Air and Missile Defense Detachment.
Under Hutchison, the garrison supported the deployment of 31 units from the area and the reintegration of more than 4,000 Soldiers, civilians and family members following deployments, Butcher said.
Hutchison led the garrison as the Army acquired Sembach Kaserne from the U.S. Air Force and began preparing the installation for new Army units moving from Mannheim and Heidelberg.
That included developing relationship with key German leaders in the Sembach area. During his command, the garrison underwent countless renovations and construction projects to support Kaiserslautern’s growing military community – most recently opening new child care centers at Sembach and Landstuhl.
For officers, a command is an honor and privilege that is often tough, demanding and arduous, Butcher said.
“It’s fitting that we gather together on occasions like this one and recognize contributions, bid farewell and welcome new blood,” Butcher said.
Zetterstrom, an Army engineer and West Point graduate from Clifton Park, N.Y., most recently served a tour in southern Afghanistan. Previously, he served as deputy commander with the Buffalo, N.Y.-district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
For Zetterstrom, the command position returns him and his family to Germany, where he began his Army career as a platoon leader with the Bamberg-based 82nd Engineer Battalion. Other assignments include both staff and command positions with the 18th Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, N.C., and the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, N.Y. During his career, Zetterstrom has deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo and Afghanistan.
He and his wife Erin, also a New Yorker, have three children. He holds a master's degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Missouri.
“He is no stranger to the business of military construction, which will serve the command well considering the breadth of construction and renovation which will occur in the coming years,” Butcher said.
Dutch officers who served with Zetterstrom in Afghanistan also attended the ceremony, as did many local German officials.
“I look forward to continuing and building the critical relationships with our German and European friends and allies,” Zetterstrom said.

Sky Garden Noida is by far the most ambitious and largest project under the umbrella of the ever-growing and expanding SHRI Group.
The Noida authority on Wednesday said the two Metro lines—one towards Noida Extension and the other towards Greater Noida—it accepted on Thursday were “part of the government’s honest and authentic efforts” to offer better connection to citizens.
A year ago, when Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) was in authority in Uttar Pradesh, the authority had “approved” two identical collections. In the last one season, nothing occurred on floor but contractors rode the Metro trend and wooed customers. Even before the last govt declared programs to take Metro from Noida to Noida Extension and Greater Noida, contractors estimated Shri Radha Sky Garden Noida a profitable venture.
Shri Sky Garden Noida is a premium property with most luxury activities and features present inside the project. All the features inside the campus of the project suit the taste of a modern individual. There are present a number of large bay windows on the walls of every unit which gives strikingly lovely views of the greens spread outside. The complete project is contrived in a space of 50 acres which is quite wide to accommodate features such as reserved car parking and kids’ playground. Recreational facilities which are made available to its residents by the Shri Group are cricket ovals, basketball courts, social clubs, swimming pools, and plethora of other activities.
“Within two decades, 1.5 Lac family members will have filled these two and three-BHK apartments in Noida Extension. These people generate between Rs. 40,000 and Rs. 70,000 monthly and 80% of them are employed in Delhi. These are common Metro customers. These are also potential customers of Shri Sky Garden as this is an economy luxury endeavour. As it is, as a growth authority, it’s our requirement to offer water, authority and connection to our citizens,” he said.
“As for the Noida-Greater Noida venture, the visitors nowadays might be less than predicted but it will go up with time. We will industry our venture in such a way that we never experience the low-traffic issue,” he said. “It’s a big venture and we’re discovering the opportunities of performing it on PPP foundation.”
The new plan
The 7-km Noida-Noida Extension path will price Rs. 1,400 crore. Till Noida Extension there will be two programs. The 30-km (approx) Noida-Greater Noida path will price Rs. 8,000 crore. This will be designed on PPP design.
The old plan
The authority panel a season ago accepted a range from Noida to Greater Noida via Noida Extension. It never made the decision duration, programs and budget. Even before that the authority accepted a range from Noida to Greater Noida along the Expressway and placed the price at Rs. 5,000 crore. The 23-km path was to have 22 programs.
Current challenges
Construction of Greater Noida and Noida Extension collections would experience difficulties because of agitations by farm owners, non-clearance of Greater Noida’s expert strategy by the NCR preparing panel and money meltdown.
Builders rode the Metro wave
Even before the last govt declared programs to take Metro from Noida to Noida Extension and Greater Noida, contractors rode a non-existent Metro trend. They briefed and attracted sales homeowners into booking stating “upcoming Metro links” in Shri Sky Garden Noida Extension. Several group sites stayed abuzz, “letting citizens know” “better connectivity” in Noida Extension in “the times to come.” “The Noida Extension Metro path, described regularly in Shri Radha Sky Garden, was a item of individuals' creativity,” said a mature formal. Actually, there is no place known as Noida Extension in formal information. The place being known by contractors as Noida Extension for self-evident factors is actually aspect of Greater Noida.
