Cambridge, MA: Widener Library, Harvard University. It is named after Harry Elkins Widener, a Harvard alum, book collector, and Titanic victim. The library opened in 1915.
An illustration of a Brandy Crusta on page 52 of The Bar Tender's Guide instructs the maker to rim a fancy red wine glass in lemon juice and them dip the rim in pulverized white sugar. A lemon peel was to be added to the inside rim of the glass before the strained drink was poured inside. Jerry Thomas completed the recipe with instructions that his readers should, "Then smile."

At Grand Valley State University (Allendale, Michigan) for the excellent Re-think It 2015 Conference. Here are my pictures of the beautiful Mary Idema Pew Library Learning and Information Commons that opened in 2013. This is a LEED Platinum building (the first I ever visited). From their site: "The Mary Idema Pew Library Learning and Information Commons is designed to be the intellectual heart of the Allendale Campus. It will exceed the expectations of anyone who thinks of a library solely as a home for printed books and whispered words. In this new library, students will find a range of environments, from noisy to quiet, in which they can work on an assignment alone or in a group; receive coaching from a peer consultant in research, writing, or presenting; practice a new skill or play with a new idea; learn something unexpectedly; engage easily with each other in spaces engineered to accommodate the sounds of natural conversation; or curl up by the fireplace in a contemplative space with the best views on campus. Students will do all of these things in a building that was crafted with their needs in mind—the right lighting, the right furniture, the right resources, the right services, the right spaces, and the right amount of flexibility. "Going to the library" will take on a whole new meaning as the Mary Idema Pew Library Learning and Information Commons becomes and integral part of every student's experience at Grand Valley."
Well, I made something bigger, but the text still couldn't be as large as I wanted - just too many words! This was in an 11 x 14 landscape plastic sign holder, placed in the center of the desk.

The last few decades have seen a revival of interest in historic cocktail culture. This bartender's guide housed in KSU's Special Collections, was written by 'Professor' Jerry Thomas, often called the "Father of the Cocktail." The book is bound in light brown cloth and stamped in gold with an illustration of a well-dressed gentleman on the front holding a drink in one hand, a cigarette in the other. Published in 1862, this guide also included a "Manual for the Manufacture of Cordials, Liquors, Fancy Syrups &c., &c." by chemist Christian Schultz.

In Stack Room 2 you see the stacks of books from printmaking through the subject of books themselves. At the far back are the illustrated children's book. The signs on each stack indicate the subjects housed there.

As part of the campaign "Österreich liest" (Austria reads) with about 1500 events all over Austria, we invited twelve people to present their favourite books - teacher, librarian, student, press officer, pensioner, art manager, interior designer... (all of them are on the photo). Jakob Perschy, head of the provincial library of Burgenland, and me moderated the event, our boss from the university welcomed the guests. It was a really nice event with about forty guests, the room was nicely decorated, our local bookshop sold the books presented.

Today and tomorrow, the Kresge Library is participating in the Michigan Libraries for Life, an effort to increase awareness for organ donors. While started at the University of Michigan's Taubman Health Sciences Library, this program has extended to other universities in the state and helped add over 600 new organ donors to the registry over the last two years. This is the first year that we at Kresge are hosting an information table and has the ability to help you register to become an organ donor.
The drive coordinates with Gift of Life Michigan, the state’s designated organ and tissue recovery program, and is closely allied with University of Michigan effort Wolverines for Life, a collaboration between the University of Michigan community, Gift of Life, Be the Match, Red Cross, and the Michigan Eye Bank.
If you would like information about organ donation, please stop by the information table at the entrance of Kresge Library the following times:
Tuesday October 2nd – 11am – 3pm
Wednesday October 3rd – 11:30am – 3pm
Thanks in advance for your consideration. Please understand that the Kresge Library zombie had nothing to do with our decision to support this initiative!

I visited the Evergreen State College Library on Wednesday, January 20th, to talk about Ask-WA with the librarians there.
I'm an alum, but don't get out to campus much, so it was nice to see some familiar sights (and plenty of change as well).

Here is an example of recognizing that the library is a meeting place. These lovely chairs are on the main floor of the library and are almost always full of lounging students and staff.
The Austrian "Linux Weeks" (Linuxwochen) consist of a series of free lectures dealing with Linux (of course), but also with free and open source software in general. As there were lectures and workshops in the university I work on May 11 and 12, 2007, we currently display books about Linux, free flow of information and open source tools in the library.
This is the poster I designed - it's featuring Linux Lass, a Linux goddess librarian, of course.

December 7, 2013 ~ It's been 20 years since I last studied in this library. A lot has changed. I'll have graduated from Rosary/Dominican 20 years ago after the new year. Hair is shorter and a lot more grey in the beard.
